The Avengers may have stopped off in New York City to fight a wave of invading aliens and a mad Norse demi-god, but once the smoke cleared they got on with their superhero lives, some of them travelling very far away indeed. In the everyday life of the city, a team of home-grown heroes are about to join the Marvel small-screen universe: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and finally a team-up of all four in The Defenders.

Daredevil, probably the best known of these characters thanks to the 2003 film starring Ben Affleck, will be the first to get a series. All of the shows will be filmed in New York, and Marvel recently cited a planned start for Daredevil some time this summer, with roughly 13 episodes in the first season.

In an interview with HitFix, Marvel Studios TV head Jeph Loeb got a little more specific. He confirmed that Daredevil will begin filming in July and that Jessica Jones will be next up, followed by Iron Fist and then Luke Cage before culminating in The Defenders. Jessica Jones already has a showrunner in Melissa Rosenberg (Twilight), and Daredevil will be created by Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods), but development for the other two shows is still in the early stages.

Loeb would not answer the question of whether the episodes would be serialized or simply made available all at once, as was the case with other Netflix series like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. He did promise that people would be “delighted” with the new set of shows, but since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. garnered many less-than-positive reviews during its first season Marvel has yet to prove that its comics-based TV shows can work as well as the movies.

While Disney CEO Bob Iger has said that the Netflix shows were based around characters that aren’t popular enough to warrant feature films, there’s nothing to stop the shows and the movies being tied together in small ways. For example, recent Marvel One-Shot All Hail the King was set inside Seagate Prison, where Luke Cage is falsely imprisoned and acquires his superhuman strength and invulnerability.
With a filming schedule for Daredevil already in place we expect to hear casting news fairly soon. __________________________________________________

[h=1]Marvel Says Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ Planned As ‘One Large Movie’[/h]

Comic fans knew to expect something potentially groundbreaking when Marvel announced their deal to bring four new series to Netflix, with Daredevil the first to be completed. Marvel Comics Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada has revealed that the tone of the show won’t be the only thing making the series unique when it reaches Netflix in 2015.

Comic book movie fans may not realize that it was Quesada who helped save Marvel Comics from the brink of bankruptcy – yes, bankruptcy – back in 1998, bringing fringe characters like Daredevil and The Punisher back into the spotlight with a darker, more refreshing approach. Understandably, that history with the visually impaired attorney/acrobatic vigilante has made the upcoming Netflix series one of particular interest to Quesada.

In an interview with CBR, the Chief Creative Officer explained that the Netflix projects are one of his top priorities, overseeing the adaptation of Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and The Defenders. But Matt Murdock will always hold a special place for the artist-turned-executive (news sure to boost optimism among fans of the hero):

“I’ve been working very, very closely with the entire team on all levels of the show. I think everybody knows my relationship with the character of Daredevil, and how important the character is to me — not just on an emotional front, but on a professional front. How DD brought me back here to Marvel, and how instrumental he was to even me being in this particular position I’m in today. I’m very involved with the show, as well as everything that we’re doing with the Netflix shows. I’m incredibly excited, plus the dark and gritty noir world of DD and the Netflix characters, it’s kind of where I live so it naturally attracts me to begin with.”

Marvel’s recent parade of blockbusters has led many fans to believe that several licensed properties (from Fantastic Four to Spider-Man) would be better served if returned to their parent studio. The campy Ben Affleck-led Daredevil (2003) in particular is still a sore spot for fans of the hero, and Marvel is taking some clear steps to avoid that film’s mistakes (the series will actually be filmed in New York City, for instance).
But according to Quesada, those in charge aren’t bothering with regret (even if Affleck is), stating that “we’re not going into this show with the idea of trying to erase the memory of anything that came before.” Fans may not be so willing to forgive and forget, but there’s no question that the new format selected for Murdock’s second wind still carries some risk. Not as much as a blockbuster film, perhaps, but Marvel has also chosen to avoid the standard TV formula selected by Warner Bros. and DC Comics for both Gotham and The Flash.

The Netflix model has seen recent success, but in the case of Daredevil, Quesada hints that fans wishing for a big screen reboot may be pleasantly surprised:

“One of the advantages is really from the planning stage — obviously it’s much easier to work with a smaller number of episodes than it is with a larger number of episodes. We can sit there and look at 13 episodes and plan it out as a very large movie. It makes seeing the bigger picture a little bit easier.

“You can’t deny that there will be binge-viewing. You know that there are going to be some Marvel fans that when this show premieres, they are going to go on to Netflix, and they are going to sit there for 12 to 13-plus hours, and watch the entire thing all the way through. It’s going to happen. The Netflix model offers us the advantage of being able to construct the show in a manner that is very different than a weekly network TV show… With weekly TV, you sit there and go, “The audience may not want to wait two or three weeks to get this particular bit of information.” Whereas with Netflix, we might be able to hold onto a particular piece of information, because they may just watch it two hours later.”

It’s difficult to tell how the finished product will differ from standard TV seasons when all is said and done, but clearly Marvel has hedged their bets by assigning writer/director Drew Goddard to run the project (presumably before he shifts focus to Sony’s Sinister Six team-up). It’s worth mentioning that while Marvel is taking a different direction than WB (although Gotham‘s creator confirms the series will be one long story arc as well), Quesada sees comic book talent across the entire industry – the main reason he doesn’t see the wave of superhero blockbusters ‘crashing’ now that it’s arrived:

“This is something I’ve been hearing now for over 10-plus years. “When is the wave going to die? When are people going to say, ‘I’m sick of comic book movies’?” You know what? I’m sick of people saying that… Everybody who is in our industry, everybody who loves what we do, from the creative side to fandom, we’ve been here forever, and we keep coming back for more, as long as the books are good, as long as the stories are great, regardless of whether they are Marvel, DC, Image, Dynamite, superheroes, alternative, indie, corporate-owned, creator-owned, licensed, paper, digital — it doesn’t matter where they’re coming from. People just want great stories.”

What do you think of Quesada’s comments? Do you see Marvel’s deal with Netflix as just the first of many comic book adaptations, or will future adaptations depend largely on the success of Daredevil and his colleagues?

Drew Goddard Exits Marvel’s ‘Daredevil’ Netflix Series; New Showrunner Named

Marvel Studios has already had a good 2014, with Captain America: The Winter Soldier breaking box office records with a huge haul in April. Plus, the exciting second trailer for their ambitious August release, Guardians of the Galaxy, has left fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe eager for more.

Then came yesterday’s news that director Edgar Wright has walked away from his long-in-development Ant-Manfilm for Marvel Studios. The details on what led to Wright’s departure have not been confirmed, but rumors suggest that extensive rewrites to the original screenplay by the director and Joe Cornish led to Wright’s exit. This seems like an isolated incident, but it might be just the first in a series of developmental shake-ups at the studio.

Today, Latino-Review broke some news concerning another hotly anticipated Marvel property: El Mayimbe’s sources said that Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard has left the Daredevil series, which is set to air on Netflix. Goddard was set to write and direct the pilot episode of the show, and then remain aboard as showrunner.

Marvelhas since confirmed this, and reports that a new showrunner has been named. Steve S. DeKnight (Spartacus, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer) will take over the project for Goddard. Read the official press release below:

Marvel is proud to announce that acclaimed writer, director and producer Steven S. DeKnight (“Spartacus,” “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer,” “Angel”) has joined “Marvel’s Daredevil” as Executive Producer & Showrunner on the all-new 13-episode series premiering on Netflix in 2015. Drew Goddard, who also wrote the first two episodes, will continue to serve as Executive Producer on “Marvel”s Daredevil” as he writes and preps Sony’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” spin-off film, “The Sinister Six.”

Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 spinoff Sinister Six - with Goddard set to direct - could, according to the rumor mill, begin filming as soon as January 2015, which has led to the speculation that the film could see a release as soon as 2016. Regardless of whether that’s accurate or not, it seems that Daredevil’s production schedule just left too slim a window for Sinister Six.

It appears that Goddard’s voice will still influence Daredevil, since he has written the first two episodes and is remaining involved in a consulting capacity. What Marvel and Daredevil fans gain with DeKnight is a seasoned veteran of geek-friendly television. Besides his work on all three seasons of Spartacus and on Buffy, DeKnight worked with Joss Whedon on Angel and Dollhouse, along with a stint on Smallville.

Just as Edgar Wright’s leaving Ant-Man has apparently not affected the film’s release date, there is similarly no indication that Daredevil has been delayed, with the 13-episode initial season still set to debut on Netflix in 2015. With the supposed start date of July, 2014 just around the corner, can we expect an official delay in production? Or will the show’s casting be confirmed soon instead? Stay tuned for details as they emerge.

[h=1]Marvel’s ‘Daredevil’ Series Will Star Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock[/h]

Marvel and Netflix’s planned Daredevil TV series has been through quite the speedbump this week, as Marvel announced that Drew Goddard will no longer act as show-runner – and instead, will only be involved in the series as an executive producer, while he turns his attention to Sony’s Sinister Six movie. Meanwhile, Goddard’s fellow Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum, Steven S. DeKnight, has taken the reins of Marvel’s first Hell’s Kitchen superhero show.

It’s still unclear whether this reshuffle has affected the planned July start date for production on Daredevil, but if the show is to remain on schedule, then assembling its cast is the next crucial step. Luckily, the change of hands doesn’t seem to have interrupted the development flow too much, as it seems that Marvel has now found its Daredevil.

Sources have confirmed to THR that Boardwalk Empire actor Charlie Cox will be fighting in the courtroom by day, battling crooks on the streets by night, as Matt Murdock. Although Marvel and Netflix declined comment on the casting, Variety‘s sources have also confirmed the story and an official announcement is expected soon. (Note: Latino Review was the first to break this story, before other sites confirmed.)

Cox doesn’t hail from Hell’s Kitchen, New York or even the USA, but rather was born in London and raised in East Sussex. His best known role is as Tristan Thorne, the hopelessly romantic protagonist of Matthew Vaughn’s 2007 fantasy film Stardust, but since then his career has been fairly quiet. In Boardwalk Empire, he played Irish immigrant Owen Sleater, who worked for Nucky Thompson as a driver and bodyguard.
Daredevil will be the first of five Marvel shows produced for Netflix; following The Man Without Fear’s TV show will be Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and then finally a team-up of the characters in The Defenders. The goal of these shows, according Disney CEO Bob Iger, is to monetize the Marvel characters that aren’t going to get their own big budget movies.

Marvel fans, tells us in the comments if you think Cox has the potential to be a good fit for Matt Murdock. (Try squinting at his picture and imagining him in the red hood.)

[h=1]Marvel’s ‘Daredevil’ Series Casts Vincent D’Onofrio as The Kingpin[/h]

Daredevil, the first of Marvel Studios and Netflix’s upcoming TV series about superheroes based in Hell’s Kitchen (which shall culminate in a Defenders crossover mini-series), is slated to begin production on location in New York next month, which explains the recent influx of updates on The Man Without Fear’s live-action small screen debut.

First came the news that Steven S. DeKnight (Smallville, Spartacus) has taken over show-runner duties from Cabin in the Woods co-writer/director Drew Goddard (whose penned the first two episode of the Daredevil series) – and thereafter, Marvel announced that Charlie Cox (Boardwalk Empire) has been cast as blind lawyer Matt Murdock by day, masked vigilante Daredevil by night. (Or maybe by day occasionally – being Daredevil isn’t exclusively a graveyard shift job.)

Everyone superhero needs an antagonist – and easily, the most famous of Daredevil’s is that of Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. The Kingpin, who was previously brought to life onscreen in a memorable turn from the late Michael Clarke Duncan. Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that, in the upcoming Daredevil Netflix series, Fisk will be portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio – who, by the sound of it, will be playing a traditional version of the Kingpin (less physically intimidating than Duncan’s, though), described as “a powerful businessman whose interests in the future of Hell’s Kitchen” brings him into conflict with Murdock – and his costumed alter ego.

Here is an official statement from Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb:

“We’re incredibly proud to have an actor with the gravitas and versatility of Vincent joining ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ in such an integral role. Wilson Fisk is an iconic villain whose cunning and power make him the dangerous equal of our hero.”

Vincent D’Onofrio in ‘Escape Plan’

D’Onofrio, pictured above in last year’s Sly Stallone/Arnold Schwarzenegger team-up action/thriller Escape Plan (not his best work, admittedly…), is an award-winning character actor and seasoned veteran of the small screen, famous for his longtime role on Law & Order: Criminal Intent and performances in such films as Full Metal Jacket, Men in Black, and The Cell – all featuring D’Onofrio playing smart, yet deranged killers, disgusting creatures, and/or characters who descend into madness. (He’s also playing an antagonist of sorts in next year’s Jurassic World.)

In short: if you want someone to play Wilson Fisk, D’Onofrio is as good a choice as any you could make right now. Marvel Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada has described the upcoming Hell’s Kitchen Netflix series as being very much steeped in the neo-Noir genre, so expect D’Onofrio’s Kingpin to be quite the ruthless businessman. Maybe he’ll join Loki, among the ranks of Marvel Studios’ best villains to date.

[h=1]Rosario Dawson Joins Marvel’s ‘Daredevil’ Netflix Series[/h]

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is expanding to the the small screen, beginning with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D on ABC which just concluded its first season, and then opening the doors to a new set of stories and characters next year on Netflix. The Netflix plan is for four character-based 13-episode series based in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen and a miniseries which presumably will team them all together and they’ll all be based in the same universe as The Avengers.

The first of these is Daredevil, a property recently reacquired from Twentieth Century Fox. Charlie Cox (Boardwalk Empire) will play the titular hero Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio has been cast as Wilson Fisk, a.k.a The Kingpin and primary antagonist to Daredevil. Joining them will be Rosario Dawson.

Marvel just made the official announcement but unlike Cox and D’Onofrio, they suspiciously neglect to specify which character Dawson – who reprises her other comic book role in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For this August - will play, only hinting that she’s a “dedicated young woman whose quest to heal the wounds of Hell’s Kitchen brings Matt Murdock unexpectedly crashing into her life, while her own journey forever alters the course of his battle against the injustices of this broken city.”

As the production ramps up for a shooting start date next month in New York, more supporting cast members will be announced very shortly and not long after, we’ll have to start hearing who are playing the other series leads as Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones – especially since they may crossover into each other’s programs. Remember, it’s all connected.

Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television:

“Rosario Dawson is one the most charismatic, talented and powerful actresses in Hollywood, so she was always at the top of our list for ‘Marvel’s Daredevil. Her role in the series is absolutely critical to Matt Murdock’s journey to become the hero we know as Daredevil.”

Could Rosario Dawson be playing Murdock love interest Karen Page? The villainous Typhoid Mary? Maya Lopez, one of the few deaf comic book characters? Elektra? Share your thoughts in the comments!

[h=1]Elden Henson Joins ‘Daredevil’ As Marvel’s Foggy Nelson[/h]

Daredevil, serving as a launchpad of sorts to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s continued expansion on the small screen via Netflix, isn’t taking any chances in casting. So far, the major players joining Daredevil’s cast are all proven, acclaimed and recognizable talent. As such, all of the official casting announcements have been released separately with some time apart by Marvel as part of their early marketing.

Joining the Netflix series as the MCU’s version of Foggy Nelson is Elden Henson, a long-time actor who began his career as a child star and earned a big break starring in The Mighty Ducks and its sequels. He’s appeared in several high profile films from Idle Hands and The Butterfly Effect to Deja Vu and Jobs, and he’ll be seen again shortly on in Parts 1 and 2 of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay.

Henson joins Charlie Cox who plays the titular lead, Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, a.k.a The Kingpin, and Rosario Dawson in an unspecified lead role. If Dawson is playing a love interest such as Karen Page from Marvel Comics, we could see a little bit of romantic friction between the three since Foggy also has feelings for Page. This being the MCU however, there can be twists and turns on that and the fact that Marvel is hiding Dawson’s character’s identity plays into the possibility that there’s a lot of intentional mystery about her role in the story.

Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television:

“Elden plays one of the most important characters in the world of ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’ and we’re thrilled to see Foggy Nelson brought to life by such an incredibly talented actor. He perfectly captures the heart and soul of this series, bringing an added resonance to Matt Murdock’s fight against the injustice in their great city.

Foggy Nelson is the best friend of Matt Murdock aka Daredevil and was previously played by Iron Man director Jon Favreau opposite Ben Affleck’s Murdock in 2003′s Daredevil from Twentieth Century Fox. Murdock is a lawyer by day when not suited up in his red suit as The Man Without Fear and Nelson is his law partner. They were longtime friends before that, attending schools together, with Murdock even protecting Nelson from bullies. Depending how successful Marvel’s Netflix test is, we could see Murdock and Nelson for a very long time together and there are decades of stories and life events shared between the two in the lore to draw from. Daredevil begins shooting in New York this year for a 2015 premiere.

[h=1]‘Daredevil’ Series Casts Peter Shinkoda in a ‘Major Recurring Role’[/h]

Coming to Netflix in 2015 is Daredevil, the first of four new shows that Marvel is producing for the streaming service. The series will have 13 episodes but is being planned as “one large movie.” And eventually – along with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist – it will culminate in a miniseries that will unite all these characters together titled The Defenders.

Many of Daredevil‘s major roles have already been cast. First was Charlie Cox as the titular character Daredevil a.k.a. Matt Murdock. Next, Elden Henson was cast as Foggy Nelson, Murdock’s best friend. Joining the series in an as-of-yet unspecified role is Rosario Dawson, though chances are good she’ll be playing the hero’s love interest. Karen Page or Elektra, perhaps? And playing Daredevil’s larger than life villain, Wilson Fisk a.k.a. The Kingpin, will be TV legend Vincent D’Onofrio.

According to Deadline, the newest cast member to join the series is Peter Shinkoda (Falling Skies) as a man named Hachiro, an original character created for the series who is described as a “major recurring role.

No further details were made available to suggest what kind of a role this new character might have, and as far as we’re aware, Hachiro has no counterpart in the comics. One possible theory suggests Shinkoda’s part is filling the role of Daredevil’s mentor, a character originally named Stick and typically depicted as an older white man.

Hachiro being Daredevil’s mentor is purely speculation, but if Shinkoda isn’t playing an ally of Daredevil’s, there’s really only one other option: another enemy. Being that the role is listed as a major recurring one, it wouldn’t be out the question for Hachiro to be an associate of The Kingpin’s, possibly even an underling or a second-in-command.

Whatever the role, the cast for Daredevil is beginning to fill out. What kind of a character do you imagine Peter Shinkada’s Hachiro will be: friend or foe? Let us hear what you think in the comments below!

[h=1]‘Daredevil’ Showrunner Teases ‘Gritty, 1970s New York’ Setting[/h]

Marvel Studios’ and Netflix’s upcoming collection of superhero series – each one based in Hell’s Kitchen and filmed on location in New York – will vary significantly in style compared to previous Marvel projects… or, at the very least, so the folk working on the shows behind the scenes would have you believe. The first of these series is Daredevil, starring Charlie Cox (Boardwalk Empire) as the blind, righteous, lawyer Matt Murdock – whose costumed alter ego, Daredevil, battles such criminals as the nefarious Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) on the streets of Murdock’s battered, but still standing, home turf.

Marvel Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada has said that the Daredevil series – which he also referred to as “the street level Noir side” of Marvel Studios’ larger Shared Universe (one that includes movies and small screen fare alike) – is “Marvel doing street level superheroes.” In other words, the gist is that Daredevil will be to, say, Michael Mann’s Heat what Guardians of the Galaxy is to Star Wars or Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is to a show like Alias – a project that takes well-established genre tropes and integrates them into the colorful Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Indeed, much as this past spring’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier called back to the paranoid political thrillers that were all the rage in the 1970s, Daredevil‘s portrayal of life in New York will recall the portrait of the city painted in such iconic ’70s titles as Taxi Driver. Or, rather, that’s what showrunner Steven S. DeKnight (creator of the Spartacus TV show) appears to be getting at, in the above video interview recorded on the red carpet for the Guardians of the Galaxy premiere (see his quote below).

“We’re going for a very gritty, 1970s New York feel for the ['Daredevil'] show. We love the idea of beauty in the decay of the city, and Hell’s Kitchen being a place that is both horrible and beautiful at the same time. That’s why Matt Murdock loves it so much and wants to protect it.”

Writer/director Joe Carnahan (The Grey) also wanted to put a 1970s throwback spin on the Daredevil property, before the rights reverted from 20th Century Fox back to Marvel – so clearly, DeKnight and his creative team aren’t the only ones who think that such an approach is a good idea. (Original Daredevil showrunner Drew Goddard, who wrote the first two episodes, must’ve had the same battle plan.) Fingers crossed, Daredevil will turn out well for it – not only blazing a trail into unknown territory for Marvel Studios, but also setting a good precedent for the “street level superheroes” series to follow.

Rounding out the Daredevil cast are such names as Rosario Dawson (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For), Elden Henson (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay), Peter Shinkado (Falling Skies), and Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood).

[h=1]Marvel’s ‘Daredevil’ TV Series to Hit Netflix In 2015[/h]

Marvel Studios seized the day at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Between prop shots, incidental (but important) story and character details, first glimpses of footage from The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man, the casts of both films showing up in force, and news about a third 2018 release, Marvel gave DC a run for their money. Maybe none of this is especially surprising, given that their lifeblood flows from the pages of comics, but the breadth of fan-service Marvel provided in Hall H and beyond was impressive nonetheless.

Coming on the tail end of festivities is an update on one of their decidedly more small scale enterprises: the impending serialized reboot of Daredevil, backed by Netflix for their Instant streaming service. Most of the broad details about the show are well known – its troupe of actors is in place (ranging wide and varied, from Charlie Cox, to Vincent D’Onofrio, to Rosario Dawson, among others), showrunner Steve S. DeKnight has his hands on the reigns following Drew Godard’s departure, and despite the fits and starts, the New York City based production is well on track.

What hasn’t been transmitted yet is a premiere date, or at least something more concrete (and much less narrow) than “sometime in 2015″. No longer, though: according to the folks at Bam Smack Pow, via the very last Marvel panel of the weekend, Daredevil will hit Netflix starting in May 2015. The precise day of availability didn’t come up, but knowing the month is a lot better than not knowing. If nothing else, it gives us a clearer idea of when to expect the revitalized adventures of Matt Murdock to begin anew.

Speaking at the panel, Joe Quesada – Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer – pirouetted around questions about interactions between Daredevil and the other street level superheroes (Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones); he only went so far as to express his excitement at the thought of these four characters teaming up for Marvel’s planned Defenders miniseries – also touching base briefly on Daredevil‘s NYC backdrop. Sounds like he had a lot to say about the nuts and bolts of the show, but little and less that actually ties back to new details on what to expect from it.

Maybe that’s okay, though; just having a time frame for when Daredevil will be in the can and ready to go is pretty exciting, especially given how much emphasis Marvel is putting on their bevy of hush-hush future projects. The effort they’re putting into their theatrical endeavors is striking enough on its own, so much so that it’s easy to forget about their ventures into uncharted waters by streaming original content. Official word on their fledgling attempt at bringing their brand to new platforms might seem slight, but it’s a reminder of the studio’s expanding ambitions.

With about ten months left until Daredevil vaults its way onto our Instant recommendations pages, and with filming just beginning to get underway, there’s not much else that Marvel possibly could offer to satiate fan anticipation. But now there’s an end goal in sight, and that beats being left in the dark.

[h=1]‘Daredevil’: Vincent D’Onofrio On Playing Kingpin & Acting for Marvel[/h]

Marvel Studios’ continued success is certainly in part due to its habit of recruiting top-notch acting talent, to bring the eccentric, outlandish and/or otherwise fantastical inhabitants of its comic book universe to life on either the big screen and/or TV. Case in point, the first of its upcoming Hell’s Kitchen-based Netflix series, Daredevil, will be headlined by a reputable squad that includes Charlie Cox (Boardwalk Empire), Rosario Dawson (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For), and celebrated “actor’s actor” Vincent D’Onofrio (Law & Order: Criminal Intent).

D’Onofrio, who memorably played dangerous and/or disturbed people (or, in certain cases, non-humans) in such films as Full Metal Jacket, Men in Black, and The Cell, is following in the footsteps of the late Michael Clarke Duncan, by portraying the villainous Wilson Fisk (a.k.a. Kingpin) on the Daredevil Netflix series. Filming on Daredevil is currently underway, but D’Onofrio took the time to chat with Screen Crush about his experience of joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe – among other topics related to the Daredevil series.

As you would expect, D’Onofrio was full of praise for Marvel Studios and its “huge” Shared Universe. More interesting, perhaps, was what he had to offer, on the topic of how many people have described working for Marvel “almost as their childhood fantasy come to life.”

Yeah. I mean, it’s kinda cool. The thing about Marvel is that they’re not – they’re into real acting. They’re looking for artists that are willing to take chances and are willing to create characters, even if that character has been around for years and years in comic books, they still are depending on us to create something and take it somewhere else.Robert Downey [Jr.] is the perfect example of that. Who knew that Iron Man was going to be who Robert made him?… And Jon Favreau. I would have never guessed Iron Man was going to be that kind of Tony Stark. Not in a million years, and, you know, that’s because of Jon and especially Robert. So, everybody is following suit with that. Personally, I felt Downey kind of led the way in that, and he’s kind of said to the studios and to the public, “It can work. These Marvel things can work.

Indeed, the best characters featured as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far – whether we’re talking about one of the Avengers (such as RDJ’s Tony Stark) or even a supporting character like Dave Bautista’s Drax the Destroyer from Guardians of the Galaxy – are the ones where the actors behind them have been fully committed to putting their own stamp on the part – as they would any other role, outside of a comic book movie. As RDJ have demonstrated, it then becomes all the easier to ignore what their character might’ve been like in the past, as explored through the printed page over the years.

Part of what makes D’Onofrio seem like such a promising choice to play Kingpin is his approach; besides having the proper build and height (he’s 6′ 4”), D’Onofrio tends to treat every role he takes on with the same devotion – no matter how ridiculous or “unrealistic” they may seem on the surface, that is. Case in point: the actor kept his lips shut about what he intends to bring to the role of Kingpin, during his talk with Screen Crush, but promised to deliver something as memorable as you could ask for.

I think – it’s not just me, by the way, it’s the writer. It’s Steven DeKnight, it’s Jeph Loeb at Marvel, it’s the scripts, and it’s me. I think it’s gonna be the … I hope — I should say – I hope it’s gonna be the new way to look at Wilson Fisk. I think that there will be no other Wilson Fisk but this one after we’re all done with it. That’s what we’re hoping for.

Steven DeKnight (creator of Starz’ Spartacus TV series), as mentioned by D’Onofrio above, is currently serving as the show-runner on Marvel’s Daredevil Netflix series. Additional cast members on the show include Elden Henson (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 & 2), Peter Shinkado (Falling Skies), and Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood).

Daredevil will be made available for viewing on Netflix Instant beginning May 2015.

[h=1]‘True Blood’ Star Deborah Ann Woll Talks ‘Daredevil’ Role[/h]

Disney and Marvel’s ongoing success story added two new chapters with the successful releases of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. The 2014 summer blockbuster season is winding down, the fall releases are on the horizon, and fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are looking ahead to what’s next.

May of 2015 will see the release of director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron with Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man to follow in July. Perhaps just as exciting, however, is the fact that showrunner Steven S. DeKnight‘s Netflix series adaptation of Daredevilwill premiere in early May 2015, just the first of four Marvel-based series to debut on the streaming service.

Daredevil will star Charlie Cox as The Man Without Fear, with Vincent D’Onofrio set to portray Daredevil’s nemesis Wilson Fisk (a.k.a. Kingpin). Rounding out the cast are Rosario Dawson (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For), Elden Henson (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 & 2), and Peter Shinkado (Falling Skies).

Joining them will be Deborah Ann Woll, who for seven years has portrayed neophyte vampire Jessica Hamby on HBO’s True Blood. With that show about to wrap up forever, Woll talked at length to Zap2It about her experience playing Jessica and the way her character has evolved. Woll was asked about how much of Jessica she may or may not pull from when moving on to her Daredevil character, Karen Page (Matt Murdoch’s love interest).

According to Woll, the characters might be far less alike than she expected, saying:

Well, I’m already starting to notice huge differences between the two characters [in 'True Blood' and 'Daredevil']. That’s already kind of exciting to play. I can feel myself go, “Oh, if this was Jessica she would do this,” but wanting to kind of steer differently than that. It’s always going to be me in some way. I think, as an actor, that’s part of it. You have to bring some of yourself to it, and that’s why you have to revisit roles over and over again, so you can see different people bring themselves to the part.
So it’s always going to feel a little bit similar because it will always be a piece of me, but I can choose to respond differently or play things closer to the chest. It’s been a really interest experience, actually, stepping outside of Jessica. It feels sort of weird. Jessica was like an old pair of jeans. I knew every rip, every stretched out spot. It just fit me just right after so many years. Karen, it’s going to take a little bit of time, but I’m starting to figure out how to I fit into those clothes.

In the Daredevil comics, Karen Page is the longest-running love interest for the title character, with their relationship weathering many and varied obstacles before she is eventually murdered by the villain Bullseye (played by Colin Farrell in the 2003 film).

From Woll’s comments, it sounds like playing Karen will require a significant shift in method and style. The actress went on to comment on what it will take to access her new character’s emotional range, saying:

And then I was like, “Oh, right. I’ve only known Karen for like four weeks as opposed to seven years.” I have to do this work all over again, and maybe in two years I’ll be at the point where I can cry at the drop of a hat for Karen. [Laughs] But it just takes a little bit of extra effort to get there, and making things even more real or higher stakes for yourself, whatever you’ve got to do to get yourself there. It’s a reminder of how special it was to do that one show for seven years.

With the promised gritty, street-level storytelling, it might be safe to expect some intense drama alongside the Hell’s Kitchen heroics. Judging from the range of emotions Woll seems to need to conjure up to play Karen Page, fans might expect her character arc to include some key moments from the comics, notably her anguish at discovering Daredevil’s secret identity.

Then there is the unfortunate and misguided arc which saw Karen become a heroin addict and delve into pornography. Just how gritty will Daredevil get? Deborah Ann Woll is known for having bared quite a bit on True Blood, but one hopes the showrunners approach her new character with a bit more restraint.

[h=1]‘Daredevil’ Showrunner Talks ‘Morally Gray’ Marvel Superhero Series[/h]

On the film side of superhero media, one thing that’s become very clear is that Disney/Marvel specializes in light-hearted entertainment, highlighting their characters’ fantastical nature with an aura of humor and fun. Audiences have to look no further than the company’s latest smash hit, Guardians of the Galaxy, to see that philosophy in full effect. Even the studio’s more serious-minded pictures, like the first Iron Man and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, leaned more on those elements when compared to other offerings in the comic book genre.

Given that there are signs pointing to fans’ two favorite teams joining forces at some point down the line, that business strategy isn’t likely to change any time soon. However, Marvel could use their slate of Netflix programming (featuring characters such as Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist) to inject some new blood into the brand by going down a grittier route than any of their films (or Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for that matter) have before.

The first of these new shows to hit the web will be Daredevil, which is being planned for a May 2015 debut. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has already stated that the series will be full of “gritty crime stories,” which immediately differentiates it from the pulpy space thrills of Guardians. Now showrunner Steven DeKnight – taking the place of the departed Drew Goddard – has provided additional insight on what that might entail.

Chatting with Paste Magazine, DeKnight opened up about his journey to becoming a showrunner for a major project and his relationship with Avengers director Joss Whedon.
However, the most interesting tidbits came when he discussed exactly how Matt Murdock/Daredevil will be portrayed in the show. DeKnight made it clear that this superhero isn’t going to be cut from the same cloth as Steve Rogers.

Read his quote:
“He’s a lawyer by day, and he’s taken this oath. But every night he breaks that oath, and goes out and does very violent things. The image that always stuck in my mind was the Frank Miller Elektra run where he’s holding Bullseye over the street, and he lets Bullseye go because he doesn’t want Bullseye to ever kill anyone again. When I read that originally, when I was young, I’d never seen anything like that in comics. Superman scoops up the villain and puts them in jail. This time the hero didn’t do that. It was a morally grey ground that I found absolutely fascinating. There are two sides to this character.”

Those comments play in line with DeKnight’s previous remarks that this new show will have a “1970s New York” feel. Taking it one step further, DeKnight came close to comparing the Man Without Fear to a certain caped crusader who also uses vigilante tactics to fight crime:

“He’ll come close to killing somebody. And it’s that fine edge—Why doesn’t he go all the way? I really liked the flawed heroes, the human heroes.”

That dichotomy should prove to be an interesting one to explore and give Marvel an outlet to dive into the hard-edged side of their source material that doesn’t gel with the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. On the Screen Rant Underground podcast, something our editors have mentioned many times is the feeling that the studio would benefit from launching a “Marvel Knights” banner that was separate from their core programming. The moniker being used officially is The Defenders, but the basic principle remains the same. Viewers will (hopefully) be getting the same quality Marvel productions we’ve come to expect, but in a new light.

At first glance, Marvel breaking away from the mold that they’ve used to overwhelming success (so far) could be risky – but this Netflix corner of the universe can be a positive development for the brand. Not only does it allow Marvel to utilize fan-favorite characters that would otherwise be overlooked, it also allows them to showcase a different corner of thier universe, potentially drawing in a new segment of viewers to give the brand even more extension than before.

The fanfare surrounding TV dramas like True Detective and Breaking Bad illustrated there was an audience for rich, morally-ambigious storytelling – which sounds like something Daredevil will fully embrace. It’s just another case of using comic book characters to blend multiple genres together to give audiences a full-blown experience. Color us interested.

[h=1]Marvel’s ‘Daredevil’ Series Casts Scott Glenn as Stick[/h]

With fictional histories that span decades, most superheroes have amassed quite the collection of memorable supporting characters – whether it’s on the comic page or on the screen. Most of the publicity and fanfare surrounds the title character’s arch-enemies, though there’s another group of side character that deserves their fair share of attention as well. That would be the now-classic archetype of the superhero mentor.

Whether they provided training to help their pupil physically (Ra’s al Ghul) or gave strong words of wisdom for guidance (Ben Parker), these teachers helped mold the heroes we know into the protectors they are today. Audiences have already learned from respected thespians like Liam Neeson and Cliff Robertson, and now another is joining their ranks. Marvel has announced that character actor Scott Glenn (The Silence of the Lambs, The Leftovers) has signed on to the Daredevil Netflix show to portray Matt Murdock’s instructor, Stick.

For those who don’t know, Stick is the sensei who trained Murdock in martial arts. He is the leader of the mystical martial arts society, the Chaste, and has made it his life’s mission to protect its members from evil. Originally created by Frank Miller for Daredevil #176 in 1981, he has gone on to become one of the most important characters in the Daredevil mythos, having appeared in several forms of media since his inception.

Stick’s last appearance on-screen was in the 2005 film Elektra, where he was portrayed by Terence Stamp. That movie’s director Rob Bowman strayed away heavily from the source material, as Stick did not have any known connection to Daredevil in Fox’s Marvel film universe. That will obviously be a little different this time around, as show runner Steven DeKnight will be looking to add a student/teacher layer to what is already promising to be a densely rich narrative.

Keeping in line with the comics,Daredevil (along with its Defenders brethren) is going to lean closer to the darker side of things when compared to the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Just a few days ago, DeKnight mentioned how the moral grayness of the title character was something he was looking forward to tackling, while other reports have teased the possibility of dark, gritty crime stories taking place in a New York reminiscent of the 1970s.

In his earlier comments, DeKnight stated that the “fine edge” Daredevil has when it comes to almost killing somebody is an element that drew him to the project. When diving into why Murdock refuses to go all the way, it seems plausible that the teachings of Stick will be brought to the forefront and the lessons from the guru prevent the hero from crossing the thin line of vigilantism. Having a character who represents pure goodness will be a strong way of illustrating the inner-conflict of Daredevil while giving him something to strive for.

Glenn should be a good fit for that role, as he has demonstrated an excellent ability to play authoritative characters with a strong sense of dignity throughout his career. The veteran has the screen presence and the experience necessary to pull of the part of a wise, old mentor convincingly. The Daredevil cast was already shaping up to be very promising, but Glenn’s inclusion has us even more excited to see what Marvel has in store come next year.

[h=1]Jeph Loeb on How ‘Daredevil’ Will Differ from Marvel Movies[/h]

Coming off of the one-two 2014 hits of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel Studios is poised for even bigger things in 2015. Next year will see the return of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes with The Avengers: Age of Ultron and the potential launch of a whole new franchise with Ant-Man. On the television side, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns this Tuesday, Agent Carter premieres early in the year and a different “street-level” side of the MCU will be explored on Netflix, starting with Daredevil.

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has clued us in to the “gritty crime stories” the series will focus on, distancing Daredevil from the fantastical space adventures of Guardians and the more Earth-bound exploits of The Avengers and Captain America 2, and has explained how much darker the show will be than the 2003 film.

In order to drive that point home, Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb recently spoke to Jonah Weiland of Comic Book Resources on KFI AM 640 out of Los Angeles and offered some insights about how Daredevil and the other Netflix shows will differ from the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

For instance, here’s what Loeb had to say about Joss Whedon’s 2012 The Avengers team-up:

“When I watched ‘The Avengers,’ which is really one of my favorite movies, during the scene when the sky opens up, the Chitauri are coming and there’s a giant battle over by Grand Central Station, even in the theater I was thinking, ‘In the true Marvel Universe if you go about ten blocks over and an avenue down, there’s a place called Hell’s Kitchen and in that world are characters like Daredevil and Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, Hero for Hire, and those characters are not going to be involved in an inter-warfare-universe-colliding incident.’”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. initiallyseemed committed to exploring some of these corners of Marvel’s universe, but the globe-trotting nature of the superhero-spy show – and its late-season shift in focus to the HYDRA takeover of S.H.I.E.L.D. – means that series’ priorities will remain locked on more big-picture events.

The same goes for Earth’s Mightiest. Loeb went on to define the differences between Daredevil and the Avengers, saying:

“That’s what the Avengers do and they do it really, really well and those movies are incredible. We wanted to have an opportunity to be able to tell stories about our street-level heroes and how that they could possibly interact in the world of Marvel without it feeling like it’s completely detached and by the same token feeling like it’s part of that world. And it’s very much how it is in the comics, which is that Daredevil – yes, one could argue that at some point he’s been an Avenger but hey, you know, the reality is that so has everybody else [laughs]. The idea is that this is the world of people who are there to protect the neighborhood and if you believe in the neighborhood the way you believe in the planet then the emotional context is just strong.”

With the stakes of superhero movies becoming literally galactic in scale, narrowing the focus to more human stories will undoubtedly inject a whole new dimension into the genre in a way that mixing in different genres doesn’t quite cover.

As for that eleven-year-old elephant in the room – the 2003 Daredevil film starring our new Batman Ben Affleck in the title role – Jeph Loeb was very direct on how this new take on the Man Without Fear will differ from writer-director Mark Steven Johnson’s initial attempt:

“When we started talking to our actors and to our directors, this is with all due respect to the film, if you want to know what we’re not doing, go watch the movie. If you want to know what we’re doing, it’s very much steeped in the world of the comics, but it also has a life of its own and that’s really what television and our films really do is that we take the best….We hope and we’re very confident that this is the beginning of something that’s very exciting on Netflix.”

You won’t find someone like Christopher Nolan saying such things about, say, Tim Burton’s original Batman movie, and as so many Daredevil fans will attest, there’s a good reason for it. Hitting theaters between Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, that first go at Daredevil seemed to be trying for something gritty and grounded but came off as awkward and disjointed.

With the entire first season debuting all at once in May of 2015, to be followed by Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist and their eventual team-up as the Defenders, Marvel indeed may have something very special in store. If Daredevil lives up to its promise, 2015 may see Marvel dominate television, film and the world of streaming content in a way no other studio can quite match. We’ll find out for certain soon enough.

[h=1]‘Daredevil’ Star On Matt Murdock & ‘Much Darker’ Marvel Series[/h]

Marvel Studios used the 2014 New York Comic-Con as the event to premiere the first look at its upcoming Netflix series Daredevil, the first of four developing Marvel Netflix shows about the superheroes of Hell’s Kitchen. The Daredevil footage, which the Screen Rant Underground Podcast crew broke down and analyzed last week, very much supported the longstanding claim that this series will be something of a departure from past Marvel Studios films and TV series.

Daredevil will introduce the “Street Level Noir Side” of Marvel Studios’ Cinematic Universe, as it’s been described by Marvel Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada. Charlie Cox is starring as (blind) lawyer by day, masked vigilante by night, Matt Murdock, and he talked about the Daredevil series while attending the New York premiere for the upcoming Stephen Hawking biopic, The Theory of Everything (which the Boardwalk Empire alum costars in).

Cox talked to news outlets (including THR) about his experience working on Daredevil, saying it’s been “great fun” while admitting that he “wasn’t really aware of how vast the comic book world was” until he signed on to play a character in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. He also mentioned his time at the 2014 NYCC and how it drove home for him just how passionate fans are towards the Daredevil property – which means it’s a good thing that he’s been doing his homework, for the series.

“I’ve read comics after comics after comics — I’ve never read so many comics in my life, and we’re finding moments from the comics to reference in the show. We’re trying to make a show that’s new and much, much darker than anything I’ve ever seen Marvel do before.”

“Much darker” than past Marvel Studio fare was also the impression that the NYCC Daredevil footage left on the members of our staff who saw it. Netflix, much like cable television, is known for providing more freedom for storytellers to incorporate adult content into their work (see: House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, etc.) – and while Daredevil doesn’t look to go further than a “hard PG-13″ feel (judging by the ‘Con footage), early word is that it appears to be very true to the hard-hitting spirit of Frank Miller’s landmark Daredevil comic book work (“The Man Without Fear”, “Born Again”).

Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock on ‘Daredevil’

Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight (creator of Starz’ Spartacus) has also indicated before that this series’ version of Matt Murdock will be a much more “morally grey” superhero than the do-gooders featured in previous Marvel Studios’ projects. Cox made a similar comment at the Theory of Everything premiere, after he was asked what makes Murdock a “darker” costumed hero than his peers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“The concept that he can’t stop. He’s going out and he’s taking the law into his own hands, and he doesn’t know if he can stop.”

At the 2014 NYCC panel for Daredevil, Cox’s costar Vincent D’Onofrio – who is playing the antagonist Wilson Fisk (a.k.a. Kingpin) on the series – indicated that Murdock’s actions on the series are sometimes so questionable, viewers might find themselves inclined to side with Kingpin rather than The Man Without Fear. Cox likewise said that Murdock “might be addicted” to being a crime-fighter – and thus, his quest for ‘justice’ puts him at risk of doing more harm than good, at times.

This is encouraging news for us, as far as our expectations for Daredevil go. We’ve talked many a time before about how Marvel Studios’ success in 2014 can, to no small degree, be attributed to its willingness to branch out into different genres with its comic book films – be it political intrigue with Captain America: The Winter Soldier or goofy cosmic adventure with Guardians of the Galaxy.

Now, however, with Daredevil Marvel is starting to branch more not just in terms of tone, but also narrative design - using the Netflix series format to explore the origins (and evolution) of a superhero in a different manner than a film allows for. And assuming that viewers respond well to the change of pace, then there will be plenty more of that to follow.

[h=1]New ‘Daredevil’ Details Reveal No Bullseye or Release Date, ‘PG-16′ Tone[/h]

Marvel fans have a lot of reasons to be excited about the future (near and far) of their favorite shared cinematic universe. New heroes, deepining sagas, and even bigger game-changing crossover events on the horizon… The MCU is about blow open wide.

Things are certainly not slouching on the Marvel TV side, either: In addition to a much-improved sophomore season for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., we’ll see a fan-favorite character return in her own period series (Agent Carter), while the streets of modern MCU start getting crowded thanks to Marvel’s Netflix universe, which begins with Daredevil in 2015.

The Daredevil Netflix series is currently shooting in and around Williamsburg and Greenpoint, Brooklyn NYC (according to DNA Info), and from what we’ve heard so far (NYCC Panel) or seen for ourselves, (first promo images) this show will take its time carefully building the story of how blind lawyer Matt Murdock (Boardwalk Empire‘s Charlie Cox) becomes the punishing vigilante known as Daredevil.

Showrunner Steven DeKnight took Halloween 2014 as an opportunity to answer fan questions about Daredevil via a (now customary) Twitter Q&A. Here’s a quick breakdown of what he had to say, followed by a few of the actual Tweets in his own words:

  • No official release date yet.
  • Daredevil nemesis Bullseye won’t likely appear in season 1.
  • No one is yet revealing if the classic red costume will be seen (right now it’s the ninja-esque starter costume from the “Man Without Fear” comic storyline).
  • We will see plenty of Easter eggs and references to comic book lore (and presumably the larger MCU).
  • It won’t be a Hard-R or NC-17 series (like DeKnight’s work on Spartacus) but will be more gritty and violent than say, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s network TV standards.

So far it seems that a lot of fans are anxious about whether or not the series will deliver a traditional version of Daredevil they know and love; but as recently pointed out in our Daredevil discussion on the SR Underground podcast, fans need to relax and remember that this is a Netflix series, not a film.

In a film, yes, the movement from Matt Murdock’s superhero origin to full-fledged Daredevil would need to be a lot quicker to fit into a three-act, two-hour arc. However, in a Netflix series, we can get to know the character and his story and world much better as we gradually build toward the full realization of Daredevil as a crime-fighter.

“Maybe in Season 2, Pal.”

It will bug some fans to hear that Bullseye is unlikely to show up; to be fair, including the character could push things too close to the 2003 Daredevil movie with Ben Affleck, something the showrunners (and Marvel Studios) are likely trying to do quite the opposite of.

In a longer format of storytelling can also get to know Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) instead of a cartoonishly nefarious Kingpin character – as well as making actual characters (instead of narrative devices) out supporting players like Daredevil mentor Stick (Scott Glenn), Murdock’s legal partner Foggy (Elden Henson) and love interests like Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll). With casting going how it is, that deeper character development should be well worth investing in.

By now fans should know how Marvel likes to tease and tantalize and make us wait for those ecstatic geek payoffs (like full costume reveals) – so take the ride! Hasn’t it paid off in some pretty enjoyable and/or epic experiences thus far?

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is currently airing season 2 Tuesdays @9pm on ABC; the Agent Carter miniseries begins in January 2015; Daredevil is expected sometime later in 2015 with a full season release, followed by other Netflix series Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and Power Man in the future.Sources: Twitter & DNA Info
