LTTP PS3.
Hi guys, I got a PS3 (yay me) and this is my personal little LTTP topic for my journey through the PS3 backlog. Before the games though, here's a little summary of the system for me.
Notes: I'm using the exact same monitor, HDMI and audio set up I use for my 360, s if I chance upon a multiplatform game, or when i'm comparing technology between 360 and PS3, it is 100% based on the exact same setup, i-e it's as accurate as it gets.
Hardware:
- The XMB is like it was on PSP, which i've used a lot, so no harm there.
- Settings yada yada. I do like that the system allows you to use either HDMI, component or composite for both audio and video individually, i-e no 'desi-style' cable hookup needed like I have on the 360.
- The analog sticks on the dualshock 3 are loose as fuck. The 360 pad is WAAAAY better for shooter type games, there's really no freaking comparison here.
Now then, the first game i've finished so far on my journey (i'll get to Journey too ) is .. dun dun dunn .. Metal Gear Solid 4.
- Mandatory install .. yuck .. per-act Mandatory installs even AFTER the first mandatory install ... WHAT THE FUCK ??.. OPTIMIZATION KOJIMA, U HEARD OF IT ?
- TV channel bullshit at the start was entertaining I guess, though I feel it was just caching more data in the HDD while the unskipable TV shit was happening.
Graphics:
- Textures look bland, environments look drab and the game generally doesn't hold up, sure it's a bit old now, but dude there's plenty of other 2008 games that hold up just fine (eg Gears of War 2).
- Character models hold up really well, especially Otacon's model.
- Animations are typical Japanesey-over exaggerated.
- The sub-HD resolution of the game is fairly obvious in the blurry environments.
- Quite frankly I think MGS3 HD of MGS HD Collection looks better visually.
Music / Voice Acting:
- Snake is .. snake I guess.
- Besides the "old snake" theme, there's nothing really memorable in the game, the only time the music kicked in hard is during the final fight when it's actually revising the scores from MGS1, 2 and 3.
- Otacon's crying does not get any less whiny over the course of the series.
Gameplay:
- The freaking octo-camo doesn't work worth shit if you're in plain sight etc, at the very least the MGS3 camo index worked so if you had a high counter, you were practically invisible to the enemy even on higher difficulties.
- The PS3 analog sticks don't make getting head shots an easy thing, I guess i'll get used to them over time so can't really fault the game for this.
Conclusion:
- The best moment of the game for me was definitely the final fight, the only time I really felt "excited" playing the game is when the MGS1 health bar for Snake and Liquid pop up. That's about it.
Final rating:
6.5/10
