King of Fighters XII (PS3, 360) *First reviews are in*

I think God just answered my prayers. The new KOF XII get an official release date for PS3 and XBOX360. I don't know about you guys but Street Fighter 4, KOF XII and Tekken 6 were the most awaited fighting games for me. But the question is what so special about this KOFII because in the previous games from the series they tried a 3D approach or just introduced new mechanics and characters into the game. I'll tell you what is the hype is about. Its about the new HD sprites drawn from scratch for the new KOF. If you have played SF HD Remix then you'll know what im talking about. Moreover, its going to be even better than that I swear it.

Long-awaited refresh for SNK's flagship 2D fighting franchise gets a date with home consoles.
It's been four years since SNK Playmore debuted a new entry in its King of Fighters franchise, primarily because the developer went back to the drawing board and rebuilt the newest installment in the franchise from the ground up. Now the fruit of that labor, King of Fighters XII, is ready for a taste test.

Publisher Ignition Entertainment announced today that The King of Fighters XII will see a worldwide release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this July. For the 12th installment in the series, developers at SNK Playmore have redrawn the characters from scratch, first creating a 3D model of the character, posing it, and then using it as a guide for traditional, "hand-drawn" 2D pixel art.
The release of King of Fighters XII will mark the 15th anniversary of the fighting franchise, which first appeared on SNK's own arcade hardware, the NeoGeo. The game will retain the series' trademark 3-on-3 fighting action and boasts a roster of 20 characters. Fans of the series looking for a refresher course may be interested in the just-released The King of Fighters '98: Ultimate Match for the PlayStation 2, which also includes footage of King of Fighters XII.

i think i read somewhere that it had 20 playable characters, which is kinda low considering it's a kof game, but still, could be fun.

Its not cellshaded. Like I said before they are using spirte animation but this time the .gifs are in HD quality.

Nah, doesn't look like Cell Shaded. But exquisitely detailed sprites man. It's amazing how devs are bold enough in this gen to go 2D even with behemoth processing power at their disposal.

I guess they're finally realizing that "Fun" comes above all else. That said, I hope it's a PSN title, lower priced.

True words desolator. SNK have always re-used their sprites since forever. I guess the sheer amount of noteable fighting games released in last couple of years have something to do with their decision. I have never played a game in this series before (excluding spin-offs), but the looks of this game are just fantastic.

About what's being used for the graphics; this is pre-rendering combined with hand drawn work. This has been done in games, for more than a decade now, to make animation easier and sometimes to reduce development budget. Even low res games (~250x350 etc.) have been using this for a long time.

To give an analogy, this process is somewhat similar to what was done in Donkey Kong Country. However, the important difference is there is work done over these pre-rendered sprites by artists. In other words, the pre-rendered models used for characters (or sometimes backgrounds) are just the means not the end. The pre-rendering just make the arduous process of animating (the sprites) much easier.
