[HELP] What can I do of my "may-be-dead" 460?

Around 2-3 months back, I found myself at a bit of a quandary. My pc wouldn't turn on with the GPU installed. Without it however, it worked just fine. It was either my power supply malfunctioning which made my GPU go bad or my GPU had only so much life. Although my pc still turned on with the "bad" power supply, I still went ahead and got myself a new one considering it was the oldest component in my pc and it wasn't providing enough power for my GPU.

I got a Xigmatek 600w psu as you, the people voted. But, it didn't help. Pc still didn't turn on with the gpu and yada yada. My 460 only served me a mere year, and imo that's an awful short period of life for a 22,000 Rupees (at that time) card. While my previous card (9800Gt) served me over 3 years. Is it the brand (sparkle) or am I just unlucky here?

Anyhow, please go ahead and leave some suggestions on what I could do with it now. Can it be repaired? If yes, then where? Can it be sold in its "dead" condition for any amount of money?

And remember, it isn't any of the other parts conflicting as I got everything upgraded just a month or two ago before this happened.

its can be a vram issue..
issues like this are not resolved..
any if u are lucky with any capcitor going bad or a conflicting IC...
these small things get repaird.
the rest nopes..
its actually the life of ur card...

GPUs don't usually go kapuut if you keep cleaning its heatsink and keep it cool.

There could be a few things wrong in the GPU. There could be a blown capacitor. There could be broken 6 pin power slots. Maybe the PCI-E slots need cleaning, or that there is some rust on those slots (it happened with my 6950 when I kept it out for too long for cleaning, I had to use alcohol swabs to clean the rust). There are many things that could be wrong, don't give up yet.

In some GPUs, if you disconnect the 6 pin power cable to the GPU while the GPU is connected to the mobo, a red light will lit up on the GPU. Check if that happens on your GPU. If it does, maybe there is some life still to be seen in that GPU.

I have always been afraid of when my GPU would go kapuut. All electronic equipment fails one day or another. My 8600GT died in a year and a half. My RAMs have died previously quite early.

damn no 22000 rupee card how it could be so much shorten life u should take it to some repair guy coming to conclusion first bcoz galaxy and some guys are here who can take some bucks and repair it like new

damn man youre really shaking up m confidence! Im thinkin abt getting a 560ti worth the same price slot as ur 460 inshallah, using an 8k wala 6670 its running superb. I've always thought high powered GPUs dont last as long as their lesser endowed cousins.

one thing thats suggested over the interwebs for busted gpus is the 'oven cooking' method. basically you wrap ur card in aluminum foil and bake it for the prescribed time. this supposedly 'resolders' broken connections if any on ur gpu. Ofcourse you remove all wires/heatsink/fans etc first. do a google search if you want.

I didn't see any light. I am not even sure if it has an LED which would light up.

I am sorry if I did. But I shouldn't have, unless you're getting the same brand or the same card. Go ahead and get it, it's a great card. I may as well get the same for me. Where are you buying it from anyway?

I was thinking about the baking myth too BUT as my last resort. If it works, i'll cry. If it doesn't, i'll still cry because then I'd also lose the amount mave3 has offered to buy it in its dead condition. It's very nominal, but it's something.

bro there is no LEd on gpu it self..
the big board like the p67,z68,z77 have the pci led on it..
they confirm if the card is okay or not..
but if there is no activity..then its clear cut that the gpu has died..
second u try to connect the card in sli and see it shows up in windows or not..
if not then there is simply nothing that can be done....!!!
its bye bye time.....

^^ bro I've found k the GPU sweet spot lies somewhere between the 12k-16k cards... they're powerful enuff to not bottleneck a respectable PC, yet relatively easy on ur pocket. I think of it like loosing 1k everymonth I use it coz it'll blow up nevertheless

also, not only PSU but esp in city like khi its the voltage fluctuations etc which damage components inside... and THE DUST omg dont even get me started on that one!

You can smell a blown capacitor. It has that burnt silicon WD-40 smell.

To spot it, you might need to remove the GPU's casing (thats why I like nanga cards lol).

Also my 6950 has a red led near the power connectors. If I forget to put a power connector in, a red light on the GPU goes off. But as you said there is no light on the 460.


You can try what others have mentioned like try it in SLI, and check in device manager if there are 2 cards attached or just one.

That's sad man, really sad. How could a good card like a 460 die like that? I hope nothing's wrong with it.

I think the starting point is to carefully take the card apart first (like Shary Bhallu TC recommended). Now do this carefully, or get expert help. But either way, you will have to first strip down the card to the PCB. Just take off the heatsinks and covers etc. Then you may have to use a magnifying glass to see closely and figure out if any of the capacitors, resistances or other any other component(s) have burned out or been compromised. So, do that first, and you can take it further from there...

I dont recommend baking it just yet, and yeah, that should be a last resort as you yourself exclaimed.

Have you tried cleaning the PCI-E Slot on the mobo and cleaning the contacts on the card slot with an eraser
