Looking for DSL internet.

Okay, I've been doing my homework on this, I've read a few older topics around this forum but I'm still a bit messed up on this.

Now I live in Islamabad (G-10/4), which most of the services do cover.

I have a PTCL line already installed so it might be a good choice to go for PTCL.

What do you guys recommend?
I'm a heavy internet user, download a hell lot of files daily and online gaming is a need as well.

I've narrowed my search down to these ISP's:
PTCL
MicroNet
Wateen

Also, if I get a 1MB connection....WHAT WILL BE THE DOWNLOAD SPEED? Is it what the site says it is or will it be much lower.
EX: On this page ( MicroNet), the "Unlimited Plus" Package shows a down speed of 512kbps....will that be it or much lower?

PTCL will only suite your needs, unlimited downloading, higher pings which games need a lot, LDN lower pings, if you go for wateen, you cannot download, only you can browse.

Actually its not 1MB, its 1Mb, MB is megabyte whereas 1Mb is megabit.
lets do some calculations
1Mb = 1024Kb
to convert to bytes
divide by 8
1024 / 8 = 128KB

Means you will get an average speed of 128kilobytes KB, average means that sometimes download will go higher then actual download speed and sometimes less then actual download speed.



One thing more , speed will also depend on the wiring of your house, less will be the connections or cuts in the main wire, more speed you will depend, however this thing does not matter a lot, So leave it.


Third thing, i dont know what upload speed you will get, i have seen a number of people on PTCL having very lower upload speeds then download speeds, however i get the same uploading and downloading speed.
Look at my speed.

That clears our a lot of things in regard to the speed. Right now I get 256kbps, which is 2MB I guess....so I probably will have to get something similar but its out of my budget.

So 1Mb PTCL should get me fairly decent pings on XBL? With little/no lag? Coz I hate getting owned due to internet problems.

Well i dont own a 360, neither did i played on XBL, but i have heard from few 360 owners that they dont have such problems with ptcl, that is why PTCL is considered to be good for gaming from every other dsl out there.

No, but maybe for corporate sector, but not for public

Ok so what in this picture i should i tell you about?

It says that download will be 512Kbps and upload will be limited by your isp to be 256Kbps,
it says you have unlimited download, and charges are 1200,

and you will have a dynamic IP, means every time you restart your router, you will get a new IP.

However in PTCL you can get a student package givng you 30 percent discount

I was just talking about the download speed it self. Is it 64Kbps (Kilo Bytes Per Second)?

Damn! Thats slow . Okay I might need to rethink my budget now to maybe a 1Mb connection.

Wateen is out of the list. PTCL seems like a good way to go also coz of the fact that my telephone line and ISP will be the same and I won't need to buy a router, on top of that no installation charges etc.

So , this is the outcome . PTCL is the best Broadband service provider here in Pakistan .

If you're in Isb/RP then no, PTCL is not the best ISP. Micronet is.

Final question, which gives lower pings...PTCL or Micronet?

EDIT: Just found out that Micronet doesn't have unlimited 1mbps .

Well i must be corrected that PTCL has lower pings then LDN. Sorry for wrong supply in the previous post.

but i am using LDN now n its gr8...very minimal ping...shyber also explained tht!...ldn is now buying bandwidth frm transworld through TW1 so tht puts ptcl n ldn on the same footings....
btw micro net has ultimate package which costs 1200rs per mth wid 512 connection..

the only thing i can add is that ptcl's broadbad for me is working better then any internet i've ever owned in the past ..

so its worth it.
