This is gonna appeal to more people with about the same performance at a cheaper price and lower power consumption. Maybe they wana give their opposition and the customers a hint of what lies ahead? Making everyone eager to buy ATI.

well 4770 will not be WORD AROUND GAMING WORLDS .. bro it will mostly be used as HTPC gpu ...
n yes some one rightly said .. ati after a very gud run after 48xx release now r cutting their own throat ... come on most of people around have 8800gt/9800gt/4830 who the hell wud be a guy who wud like to change to this gpu ...
okay 2nd example ... how many people will gof or 4770 as their GAMING GPU in 2nd n 3rd quarter 2009 ... not many ... cause when some one is throwing a gud quad n lots of ramz n other stuff wud he spend money on 100$ gpu??? i dnt see this gpu to be any HIT at market ... ati is just experimenting n massively distributing gddr5 in market just to finish off its huge gddr5 pilez :D ...
nvidia will come very very strong ... g92 lived through 38xx 48xx n still its a gud entry level gpu ... if nvidia is rebranding its old stuff ati is just playing stupid by incorporating ODD COMBINATIONS ... they should target now mainstream n high end users n forget about low end/entry level machines ... cause that area wil noit bring them as much fortune as main stream n high end can ...

from ati gpu release i seems that they have G92 phobia ... they just wana beat it with some thing ... ANYTHING :D .... khair lets see what nvidia has next in their arsenal ... just to kill redz

Very true man. I agree with everything you said. But I do believe this card will be better than what most ppl think. I mean, fine someone got a Quad n all, but if the performance at 1920x1200 is just 5-7% less than tht GTS 250, then why the hell not save money and go for this card? Something to think about. But its not something that would last you long either. Nvidia did the same thing... when they came out with G92 8800GT... they released the 8800GTS which literally killed the G80 GTS 320mb/640mb line. I guess these companies like to experiment with their new archietectures and throw em out to make as much profit as they can. And with the HD5000 series coming out... this is the right time to experiment.. this couldn't hurt their sales at all.

GT300 specs are out... and they have 512 shader processors. Thats a MASSIVE increase. No info is out for the clock speeds, but if the clock speeds are same as GT200, we can see DOUBLE the performance increase, so yeah...overclock the GT300 and they are gonna be insanely fasttttt.

HTPC GPU ? THAAAAAT ???

A HD3450 does that job well dude!

This will be a budget gaming PC. Cus ... you know ... many people build PCs on budget ... with puny Dual Cores and budget GPUs ... like me for instance! Many others who dont earn build these 'mediocre' stuff.

Hehe yeah thats too powerful for a HTPC. And it requires a 6-pin power connector...for HTPCs, ppl usually get a card which is just powered by the PCi-e slot itself. And this card could've done without the connector if they lowered the speed on it but then there wouldnt be much overclocking headroom.

I dont get this product.

Unless ATi/AMD are taking off the HD4830, they are basically screwing themselves with this card. They had a pretty neat HD4670/4830/4850 lineup taking care of the budget-mainstream level.

Why would they take out another card which performs exactly the same like something they bruoght on the market not so long ago ?

They've been jumping around ever since the HD48xx series came out ... and its been a while ... and they are still jumping around.

Looks like they are going to jump around for a while.

welll they released it coz they wanted to be the first one towards 40 nm transition and they did with this gpu....secondly, it is better then 4830 and very close in performance to 4850 and gts250, so at price point of 11k this will kick asss, u get performance of 4850 in 11k rite, so that is a good deal......as far as 4830 is concerned, it will reach its eol pretty soon....

@Fajjo24

Well, they would have made a much bigger impact with something that wouldnt be killing its own product lineup.

ATi needs to calm down and rethink. Example ... Right now if I plan to buy the HD4830, I think .... lets add a bit more and get a 4850. When im getting a 4850 I think why not get the HD4830 and overclock it.

Now ... its going to be one big ass confusion. The HD4830 is no longer an option if both these cards are sold at the same price, so they killed that on their own ... and the HD4850 is just on par so people would think the same as mentioned above (4830/4850 confusion) ... only now ... the gap is closer!

And if they price it like 4830-4770-4850 ... thats going to be craaaaaazy (they wud do that with price reduction on the 4830).

P.S. This thing overclocks like a cheeta ... no one would touch either of the HD4830/50 now ...

not for the sake of simply defending any views for the sake of defending...
but a GPU even with a 10% less muscle than an 4850, sold at significantly less price than 4850 is very near to perfect buy for a budget minded gamer... IF this card is sold at the informed price, then 8800gs-9600gt-8800gt-4670-4830 will be instantaneously out of the market until their prices are greatly cut down, which isnt an easy job to do both by nvidia and ati.
Yes there was no need for this kind of GPU with its price, and I dont think most would disagree with it, since 4830 is already there. But nontheless when the prices settle, this may come out as an extremely interesting item.

It has poor thermal performance though... this has never been a strong point for ATI
Idles at 70C...loads at 82C
BAD COOLER!!

TechPower Up Pros and Cons:

Pros:
Excellent price/performance
Huge memory overclocking potential
40 nm GPU
Great performance/watt
GDDR5 memory

Cons:
High idle power consumption
No architectural improvements
Could be quieter
Cooler on our sample does not represent the shipping product
No support for CUDA / PhysX
Dual slot cooler

More cons than I expected...come on ati.. bring out some better coolers

Read what I said as well mate.

Here is the problem ... you to buy a GPU. You have 11-12K but can stretch it to 15K. You are now totally confused in the HD4770 comes in between the HD4830 and HD4850 price wise.

You can get the cheapest option and overclock it to match the other two quite easily. Or you can spend a bit more and get the superior new model which is even better and overclocks nicely. But then ... when you spare 1000, lets spare a couple more and get the most superior one which can overclock decently. But then, why get the superior when the least powerful is still doing a pretty good job ... but hey ... lets have a 50/50 ... get the middle ....

... confused yet ? I certainly am :p

Why people don't understand that HD4770 is here to replace HD4830 which in itself is a salvaged RV770 with disabled SP's. HD4830 was just a stop gap b/w the introduction of RV770 and RV740. ATI released that card to counter 9800GT at that time. It wasn't a viable financial solution. RV740XT or HD4770 is much more economical. As far as the HD4850 is concerned than you can OC a HD4850 too plus HD4850 is widely available so after rebates and many other discounts it will cost much less.
