Just as expected, AMD is preparing to launch its yearly major driver overhaul. The Radeon Software Crimson Relive Edition driver update is going to be made available from tomorrow. In the meantime though, a number of slides have leaked revealing some juicy details of just what is going to be included. The big headline however, is the performance gains of up to 8% in like-for-like scenarios.

The Radeon Crimson Relive driver is going to be focused around three key tenets - performance, features and stability.
Performance is the most obviously beneficial, and in the slide below you can see gains between 4-8% in some of the most popular titles in recent years. That’s compared to the Crimson 16.6.2 driver however, which released in June. This is almost certainly skewing the results in AMD’s favour, alongside the generous diagrams, but that’s to take nothing away from Team Red’s excellent driver performance improvements over the last 12 months. Consider where they were this time two years ago and it's an impressive turnaround.

Then we have Radeon Chill, a new feature which not only lowers power consumption and keeps heat down, but also lessens the number of wasted frames rendered and quickening response times. It all sounds a bit too good to be true so we'll have to wait and see, but AMD reckon it lowers the average frame time by as much as 32%.

Radeon ReLive isn't just the name of the new driver release but also of a major new feature. Radeon ReLive is a reportedly lightweight piece of game recording software, averaging around 3-4% performance hit when activated. That's a heck of lot better than the likes of FRAPS, and certainly an improvement over the fiddly Raptr tool.

Lastly there's extended WattMan support for a bunch more graphics cards. WattMan is AMD's own form of power management, letting Radeon users tweak GPU voltage, engine clocks, memory clocks, fan speed and temperature. This was previously just the RX 400 series, but support has now been added for R9 Fury, R9 390, R9 380, R9 290, R9 285, R9 260, R7 360 and R7 260 series. There are a couple of oddities however. None of the R9 370, R9 280 or R9 270 series are supported as they are GCN 1.0 products rather than GCN 1.1.

Other touted features for the ReLive software includes HDR 10 support, Dolby Vision support, VP9 decode acceleration, 24% improved click-to-response time while using FreeSync, and DisplayPort HBR3 support.

Of course that’s not all we’re getting from AMD either. Its New Horizon event is taking place on December 13th, live in Texas, where we’re expecting to see the official unveiling of its Zen-based CPUs. We'll have plenty more on that nearer the time.

Interesting. Lots of mixed reactions by the community. Needs more polish in general but the improvements are much welcome. I'll probably do a comparison benchmark of this with RX 470 and 480.

BTW, i started Ghost of Tsushima, and it got me hooked within the first couple of minutes. I already know It's gonna be a memorable experience. This is how you make a proper Samurai game. Not that SJW game Ubisoft is making.

That's still higher than it's total play length. A 5 hour campaign for a $50 game is downright scammy.

Consoles were my main platform ever since Atari 2500. But now I think it's not worth it as PC especially with DLSS deliver far smoother performance. AW2 on console didn't even had ray tracing and ran below 30fps. Similar issues plagues DD2 on consoled.
The cross gen era really made people think 60fps would be a new standard lol

Welp, done with Hellblade 2. Thoroughly disappointed. Such a nothing burger after the unique experience of the first game.

I have a PS5 but I am not satisfied with the experience. I am currently saving for a 4080 64 GB rig soon. Bit will wait for Pro if performance improves. This gen has been so bad I don't plan on buying consoles anymore for AAA gaming.

It is indeed the worst generation by far.

Both PS and Xbox have been a flop this gen as they can barely maintain 30 fps in a lot of AAA games th.

  • L LegacyGamerGuy:
As per WCCF Tech review, Xbox Series X doesn't even maintain a consistent FPS and sometimes drops into the mid-20fps range. That's unacceptable, tbh.

Still, I wonder why the PC Gamer rated it worse than Gollum. 🤔

Gradually transitioning from console gaming to PC as the games are not worth it. 6 hours of Hellblade 2 is just not worth the $50 price tag.
Score 1 for game pass. I wouldn't pay full price for this at retail either.

Just downloaded my first legit digital PC game on GoG at a discount of $8: Two Point Hospital. The same team behind Theme Hospital Two Point Studios now part of Sega. And I am having more fun than most recent AAA games except of course BG3.

Still, I don't like either Sony or Microsoft as they are focusing more on corporate greed than delighting customers. PC gaming is best of gaming and worth every penny.

PC Gamer score of 58/100 for Hellblade 2??? Is it really worse than Gollum that was 64/100? Microsoft games can't even come close to high scores of Sony exclusives apparently.

About the Microsoft (and Sony) debate, I feel both have become too greedy and losing their minds over corporate greed. Personally, I will never buy any console next gen and switch to PC gaming where democracy reins.
