Yes it shows up when he opens freedom app.And he can't sign into his Google account.

try factory reset as i think freedom might not be letting him to sign into google services.

You can get free in-app purchases with freedom.
Though it requires root.

I dont remember exactly but i think it automatically updates itself when you open the app or you receive a notification that an update is available for you to download.

i am using an old samsung one on my nexus 5 , never had any problem .
