Do we have Pacino and De Niro in today's industry?

Now, before all of you start jumping up and down on your horses, I am not talking about the acting chops of the stars in today's business. What I am talking about is the fabled rivalry between Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, two of the greatest actors the industry has ever seen.

Let me start from the beginning. They both started their careers in the 70s, rose to fame, both were Italian Americans, comparisons were always going to be there and they were. They made only one movie together in the 70s and in that movie they didn't even share the screen. And unless you don't know jack about movies, you know that I am talking about The Godfather Part II. Then came the 80s, they kept rising. Then, the 90s. During the first half of 90s, both of these actors made some cinematic gems, movies that have become iconic, roles that have received unparalled acclaim (unless somebody is in doubt I am talking about movies like Goodfellas, Scent of a Woman, Glengary Glen Ross, Cape Fear).

Then, in 1995 came a little movie by the name of Heat. All the trailers boasted of the great legacy of these two maestros of the craft, how they have over the years changed how we look at acing, possibly forever. They have inspired a generation of wanna be movie stars to actual movie stars. Their dialogues have become legendary, their legend has become fact. In Heat, they finally shared screen and that only for one scene. Suffice it to say that it has become one of the greatest scenes in the history of cinema, without a doubt.

Then their careers declined, sadly, in the early noughties. They started thinking about paychecks, probably or whatever it was. They lost the killer punch. Although ruminants of their old greatness surfaced from time to time (Insomnia, The Good Shepherd, You Don't Know Jack, Everybody's Fine) they never reached the legend they had built. But it was okay, nothing could demolish or tarnish their legacy. They remain, to this day, the staple of acting in today's industry.

Now, to my real topic. No matter how much Pacino and De Niro denied that they had rivalry, it remains a fact that they were compared by the fans. There was a great deal of excitement in seeing them together and the fans waited for it for almost three decades. They have been compared throughout their lives. It is impossible to mention the one and not talk about the other. Although they reteamed for another feature in 2008, the less talked about it, the better.

My real question is: do we have such a fairy tale rivalry in our time? Do we really yearn to see two actors on screen as badly as the fans wanted Pacino and De Niro? Do we really think that today's best actors have what they had in their peak? We live in an era of franchises, the super stars are almost obsolete. Mind numbing visual effects (you can't even get what the hell is going on in Transformers movies!!), cheesy action flicks (sorry Jason Statham fans), lame rom coms (Jennifer Aniston, for you) and stupid comic book adaptations (and yes, I am including The Dark Knight in it, although I am head over heels in love with it).

So, what do you guys think, do we have that thing? A rivalry(if there was one, but it doesn't matter because the fans made one) as fierce as Pacino and De Niro? If so, then between whom?

I don't think so. I mean people often regard a rivalry between Leonardo Dicaprio, Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and so on. But the fact is and will always be that Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are the most iconic actors that developed an incredible rivalry. There were many others in that time, like Clint Eastwood. But those two made a something else for American Cinema. That's my opinion ofcourse but I strongly stand by it.

They remain, to this day, the staple of acting in today's industry.

No there is'nt any like them... The fans had a big hand in making them what they're but there also were more things there, first of all they deserved it... Nowadays trend has changed now when we praise an actor of a particular genre we don't consider anyone their rival why? Because the more the money the compact the talent and the lower the chance of competetion for quality... If you watch closely the rivalry thingy was upto 80s or may be 90s when we saw as you mentioned these two or like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold or anyone...its a genre game nowadays.. I mean when you will start seeing actors like Shia Labeof in every big franchise so whats the point huh...

dont think anyone can take the place of deniro or pacino ! it wouild be an insult to all their success and accomplishments even if we try to put the deniro and pacino of this time altho there are quite a few talented actors in this era but still deniro is deniro and pacino is pacino :D

You misread my purpose for making this thread. As I said in the beginning of my post, the purpose is not to find actors who can match the talents of Al and Bobby D, the purpose is to find a rivalry as fierce as of those two.

I know, nobody can take their place in the history of cinema. And nobody is trying, either.

I think and agree with Max here to

Leo Di Caprio is one of the actor , who lives up the hype of De niro and Pacino .

Pacino and De Niro were phenomenal , both got fame portraying gangsters type roles , that era was start of real gangsters movies , Now that gangster stuff dont work much .
While De Niro and Pacino also did some other phenomenal roles as well .

But there is no doubt that Leo Caprio and Brad Pitt to me also matt damon who is growing as a very good actor , can live up to the hype of De Niro and pacino

Pitt has done all kind of roles , and done it superb .
Caprio has developed him self from last 6-7 years as top actor
Matt Damon is growing as a very good actor and may be in next 6-8 years he will be a world class one

I think the only actor who can close to them is Leonardo de caprio. Departed, Blood diamond, shutter island, the beach, aviator the list goes on. The guy has done some great movies and he's still quite young. Christian bale and Brad pitt are also good actors but they're past their prime. I think when he's at their age, Leo is going to be a legend as well.

Leo DiCaprio is a good actor. One of the best there is, no doubt. His talent is ever expanding. Ever since his resurgence in 2002, he has climbed the ladder and has gone steady for about 8 years now. He, quite possibly, might be a legend in the making, quite like Bobby and Al.

As for Brad Pitt, I think he is a pretty good actor, but he isn't that great. Sure, he has given tremendous performances in the past (12 Monkeys, Fight Club), but he entered the phase of the straight going A-lister after Ocean's 11, and other commercial projects. Although he has the ability to give performances that are reminiscent of his old swagger (Babel, Burn After Reading), but I believe he is just not in the same league. His popularity is no measure of his greatness as an actor, nor are his looks.

Christian Bale is a pretty decent actor, as well. Though I think people give him more credit than is due. If we jot down, he has few truly great performances: American Psycho, The Fighter. Sure, The Machinist, The Prestige and 3:10 to Yuma are great movies, but his performance, only good. And no point talking about the Batman franchise, it isn't famous due to Bale's acting skills. Rescue Dawn is another amazing Bale performance, but few people have seen that movie. Other than that, I can't think of any other great Bale performance. Please, no one say Terminator Salvation.

I think Johnny Depp probably would have been a contender to enter the rivalry with Leo DiCaprio, only if he had made less odd choices in his career. Depp made movies, during the first phase of his career, that endeared him to a totally different kind of movie goers. I am talking about movies like Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Dead Man, Benny and Joon, What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Don Juan DeMarco. Then he entered the second phase of his career during which he rose to stardom. That started with Pirates of the Caribbean. So, people are stuck with his new image, and his previous quirkiness is generally overlooked, and quite possible lost, somewhat, in the eyes of the audience. People tend to consider the Depp of post- Pirates of the Caribbean (in talking about his greatness), whilst forgetting that he clearly gave some of his best performances, and possibly his greatest, before that time.

Hence, I would say that probably Leo DiCaprio might enter into a rivalry (professional, ofcourse) with some actor, though who that actor might be, I am not sure. I know that it is not Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Ed Norton, George Clooney or Christian Bale. It might have been Depp had they not made a movie together already.

excuse me Pitt might be old , But bale and Di caprio has only 1 year age gap

@ shahbakht
Dude totally agree with you but in some cases not , The depp Case , for Depp has always picked roles which he liked he never took a challenge , most of the movies he has worked are of Tim Burton , and no matter what role Burton gives him he does , If Burton movies would have not been good Depp would have been shit .
what depp lacks is challenging roles , the guy dont even see his films he has said in many interviews that he has only seen 1-3 movies of his . He does job , he clearly never has or had intention to become a top actor

Di caprio Biggest rival to me is gonna be Matt Damon or Chris bale

Big Rock Candy Mountain.
Find a person who can rival Daniel Day Lewis and you have your answer. He is an excellent actor. He really has a passion for what he does. The man has a class of his own...but how about Sean Penn?

Think about it, both are of similar age, both have 2 oscars (a pretty big deal) and both have been nominated for oscars multiple times. Unfortunately, the media does not really put them in the spotlight much.
