Whether it was right or wrong is besides the point. There is nothing wrong with celebrating 'Defence day' to appreciate the sacrifices of our armed forces. It's just that we are giving the masses a distorted view of history. Most Pak Studies books don't even mention operation gibraltar in any significant way. For most of my school life I thought India just attacked us one fine day for no good reason.

Wow Chhowni
if our fat headed general had consulted other branches of military, it could have been a major success.
You think one country can just invade a disputed land, claim it and expect its opponent to accept the invasion and let it go? The world is a different place now where empires don't collapse.

This is the first time I'm hearing of Operation Gibraltar. How convenient of our Pak Studies (read Lie Studies) syllabus to have left it out completely. And we were told India attacked us first! :hah:

No, world was indeed a different place 48 years back.

No army has ever held onto a territory without supplies and supply lines. So with no land route ava. to Kashmir India could have rendered toothless. Just like we still hold the area captured in 1948 war. and similarly what we lost in 1971 we can't regain.

Secondly no country has held onto a colony for ever ;)

I least expected of you as the person who didn't knew of Operation Gibraltar.

Bhutto's negotiation skills ensured we got back most of what we lost. Refer to the Simla agreement 1972.

My point was that the area would have remained disputed regardless of who held on to it. It must be understood that we can not annihilate India and claim Kashmir for our own in this day and age. The key to solving this dispute is purely political in nature.

I was referring to East Pakistan.

yes, Kashmir could have remained disputed but is East Pakistan a disputed territory in 2013 ?

the actual change happened in 1980's and finally 1998 changed it all.

East Pakistan claimed independence. India didn't overrun it with its military forces so you can't compare the two instances.

Army should take a back seat and allow the politicians to deal with foreign affairs. They overruled Nawaz Sharif over the Kargil fiasco in '98 just when things had started to thaw out between the neighbours, effectively putting us many years back.

Kashmir could have done the same in 1965. Yes, it could have remained an independent territory within the State of Pakistan. there are other factors too e.g Ayub Khan pulling back Lieutenant General Akhtar Hussain Malik (an Ahamdi) at a critical time.

Kargil was another opportunity, which we lost at the table. such opportunities aren't offered again and again.

indians app ke andar ghuse huwe hain aur app ko andar se khokla kar rahe hain we cnt reject tht
General Ayub Khan missed an oppurtunity during 1962 for taking over kashmir when china was giving some tough time to indians
they operated operation gibraltor which was a complete faliure
anyone saying tht RAW CIA and MOSSAD are not involved in destroying PAKISTAN is nothing but SUMMUN BUKMUN
the biggest problem of our whole muslim umma and our whole nation is that there are many traitors within ourselves Abuses will lead to bane ande which are destroying us from the inside

Did y'all see the new Assassin's Creed trailer? They finally made a AC set in Japan & then they put a negro as the male protagonist. Ubisoft is taking cues from Disney, and it isn't gonna end well for them, just like Disney. Go woke, go broke!

if we are moving towards more and more popular trash across platforms that make billions for companies, I'm happy with all the barriers and exclusivity because at least that brings some pressure to create good stuff.
