The HM5 velour pads are friggin amazing comfort wise. But the only affect I've noticed is that they take away the bass punch. It didn't bother me that much, but the bass definitely changed a bit.

There is going to be change in sound signature no matter which pads you get. Even if you get new genuine stock pads from Audio Technica for M50 they won't be exactly the same as the ones you currently have. Used vs new and slight change in pad material since M50x are the reasons for the change. But that will be very minimal change and it depends entirely on how sensitive you are to any slight change.

In my opinion Brainwavz HM5 pads are an upgrade over stock M50 pads in terms of comfort. I don't think change in sound signature will be very significant if you get normal pleather HM5 pads. Don't get valour or hybrid pads if you give importance to bass and isolation. And angled pads will certainly change sound signature (although you may even like the change). So if I was in your position I would have bought Brainwavz HM5 pleather pads from Amazon.

Adding to what Nomad said. But there is a major problem with the m50x.

You increase the driver size DISTANCE just a bit and the sound goes kaput.

Nomad is right. Signature will surely change and for worse. You could actually try finding the original pads which will let you stay there. Even though my pads too starting coming apart so much sooner despite the fact that I didn't use em so much and I used them only in air conditioned environments so sweat was minimal, the m50 pads are special. If you want the same signature look for originals, which may be going around for $20 something or even more.

Now as much as people talk about it, I have tried the hm5 pads. I have the hm5 hybrids and angled leather. Both messed up the m50x by severely reducing the volume. Bass goes so low and the overall volume drops significantly and then you have to turn up the volume and the amping. This is something that also happens to the Fostex T50RP.

I'm not exactly sure about the standard hm5 pads but... I'm not hopeful.

As Nomad said, you wanna keep bass intact, go for leather or pleather. Btw before you do, they are $25 - $30 so check the Internet first if at all they behave the same way reducing the volume significantly.

Now there are many replacement pads in the $3 - $5 range but the do two things:

1) They reduce isolation a lot. Stock pads are damn good in isolation.

2) they will reduce resolution of sound, make mids laid-back and tone down the treble (that helps since the m50x are quite sibilant)

Personally I stopped using the original pads and would use replacement ones. I was ok with isolation and the fatigue was much lower with those fake replacement pads.

Again. It's a personal thing. If you love the sound that you have, you may want original pads. Or you could experiment with the replacement pads but it won't have that original sound. Nor the original isolation.

seems like i will have to stick to the original ones than because it will be waste of money to try 3 different Pads and finalize which one is better
what about those ath m50 earpads available at ebay around 5$ looks similar to original one should i give a try to that as it ain't expensive to try

Those are copies mate. Though I prefer them myself, they're not originals. Originals are at least $20. check the finishing at the back... the flattened edges.
