Using another modem with PTCL

Hey guys,

I have the same phone number in both my office & my bedroom. Right now whenever i need to use the internet in the office i have to take the modem with me.

I have another dsl modem lying around from some previous internet connection. However when i try to use it with PTCL it doesn't work. All the lights light up except the one labeled 'PPP'.

The connection works just fine with the modem PTCL gave me (ZTE, ZXDSL 831 Series). So does anyone have an idea how i can make the other one work?

Should i just buy a new modem that i can use in my office? What guarantee will there be that it'll work with my PTCL connection?

Your office and bedroom located at the same place? why don't you just add a switch? you can't use the two modems on the same phone line simultaneously, it will give you the PPP aka password authorization error.

Well i own a hotel & i live in the penthouse & my office is in the same building. So i have the same number in both places.

I don't want to use both connections at the same time, i'm only in one place at a time. All i want is to be able to use an additional modem in my office, so i don't have to take the modem out of my bedroom every morning.

use a switch or hub and connect ur other pc to it

A switch is looks like this:

A 8 port switch cost you RS 800 which let you connect 7 PCs and enable you to share the single internet connection among these 7 PCs. simple as that. All you need is a switch (you can also find a cheap 4 port switch too).

Also, some routhers comes with a additional port too for sharing the internet connection..

Now it's upto you, either buy this cheap switch or get a router.

Thanks for the help. Well the switch won't work in my case as the problem is not using more than one pc at a time. The office is on the ground floor & the bedroom on the 4th floor, so other than having a couple of hundred feet of ethernet cable i don't see how the switch would help me.

So i guess there's no choice but to buy another router. I just can't figure out why the one i already have won't work.

^ok, try to add both DSL routers on the both both locations i-e your bedroom and your office, but just don't switch on both together due to new PTCL policy you can't use a single password simultaneously. Switch off the other modem and after 30mins or so switch on the other one..

If still it won't worked, then either you are doing something wrong in the settings of the other modem or there might be some other issue. (last solution will be the switch..U can't even use a wireless router since your office/bedroom are not on the same floor.)

i know its kinda late to reply on this thread....but maybe you're unable to use your other modem because of (VPI.VCI) setting....im not sure what are the settings for other dsl providers but PTCL uses VPI=0 and VCI=103

I ran into same problem with my speedtouch modem before i manually changed the VPI.VCI settings. The zyxel modem used to keep disconnect, ever since ive changed to speedtouch i dun encounter any such probs.

Thanks regspy, can you tell me where i can modify these settings? I'm quite fed up with the PTCL connection at the moment.

It keeps on randomly losing the connection, only two bars will light up (Power & Ethernet). Then i usually have to leave it on for a while until the internet & DSL lights light up again. Do you think it has anything to do with the ZTE modem?

Where can i buy this Speedtouch modem that you mention. Thanks for the help.

This used to happen with me alot with my Zyxel modem......first thing before changing the modem id suggest you give PTCL a call. I did this before changing my modem.

Now you mentioned you were trying to use Another modem with ptcl connection.....whats the makers name? maybe they already offer changing the VPI.VCI settings via the built in wizard.

My bro got these modems from Qatar, actually qatar telecom offers speedtouch modems free with dsl connections but since my bro went for a wifi router he had couple of these modems lying around catching dust. Anyhow works gr8 for me....

If you cant get your other modem working, let me know MAYBE i can get you a speedtouch modem..provided you reside in KHI
