[h=1]New ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ Images, Set Photos & Plot Details[/h]

Empire reports that events are set in motion in Age of Extinction by the inventor Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg), who inadvertently stumbles upon a buried Transformer, at a time when the alien robots having been MIA since the destruction of downtown Chicago in Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

Beyond that, we have Peltz as Wahlberg’s daughter, Tessa, and Jack Reynor (Delivery Man) as her racing driver boyfriend Shane, who (apparently) daddy Marky Mark doesn’t know about. Meanwhile, Kelsey Grammar (The Expendables 3) is taking on the role of untrustworthy G-man Harold Attinger, Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) and Sophia Myles (MI-5) play a geologist and his assistant – who are interested in prehistoric Transformer technology no doubt – and, finally, Li Bingbing (Resident Evil: Retribution) as “the CEO of the Chinese Transformers.” (Okay…)

Honestly, most of these screenplay elements by Ehren Kruger (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) feel rather cookie-cutter, after the previous three Transformers movies. At least the first Transformers movie had a decent coming of age subtext to reel you in, even if it was secondary to the action and robots smashing one another silly. Moreover, in the post-Pacific Rim world, it’s all the less excusable for this breed of blockbuster to not have (at the least) a respectable human story at its core.

Then again – it is still immense shape-changing robots destroying one another (and the scenery) in 3D, so that’s reason enough for many to give Age of Extinction a go. And now, Bay is even starting to hint that this might not be his last Transformers movie after all (big shock, we know), having told Empire that “Well, it’s a director’s world… It’s a franchise world at the moment. You know, Peter Jackson is still in Middle-earth…”

Bay has also reiterated his previous claim that Age of Extinction will be more serious and sophisticated than previous Transformers installments, having told Yahoo! Movies:

“I wanted the first Transformers to be very suburban and less cool. This is a much more cinematic one. I focused on keeping this one slick. There won’t be any goofiness in this one. We went a bit too goofy [on the last one].”

[h=1]‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ Finishes Production; First Footage During Super Bowl[/h]

While the cloak of secrecy which surrounded Michael Bay’s fourth Transformers movie appears to have lifted in the past few months, the film’s function as a partial reboot for the series is still somewhat convoluted. At any rate, Transformers: Age of Extinction is Bay’s attempt to be “less goofy,” as the director has stated. Recent set images and plot details reinforce Bay’s focus on “keeping this one slick.”
As for what we know of the plot: inventor Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg, apparently not playing anyone named Flynn Vincent) accidentally unearths a buried Transformer in the wake of the devastation of Chicago which occurred in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Old favorites like Optimus Prime are returning, along with the confirmed inclusion of the Dinobots. The human cast is rounded out by Nicola Peltz (Bates Motel) as Wahlberg’s daughter, Jack Reynor (Delivery Man) as her boyfriend, Kelsey Grammar (The Expendables 3) as the apparent G-man human villain, Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) as a geologist, and Sophia Myles (MI-5) as his assistant, with Li Bingbing (Resident Evil: Retribution) as “the CEO of the Chinese Transformers.” Whatever that means.

As for the production itself – it has now wrapped principal photography. The director himself confirms the end of shooting, from MichaelBay.com, with the first footage to premiere during this year’s Super Bowl… and he apparently is sick of all the haters.

Read the whole release below:

It is a drag talking to reporters on sets. Why? Because often times they take your words and skew things to their liking. Then the crazy, lazy game of reporting on what other writers story’s reported me saying and suddenly it becomes skewed Internet truth. So I waste my time to restate exactly what I did say, again.
No I did not ‘apologize’ for any Transformers movies. I did not say I shot the last three movies “less cool” than the new fourth installment. I was talking specifically about camera style and tone, of the first movie compared to how I shot the new installment with a very big scale, cinematic style. I was very specific in saying the first Transformers was shot in a ‘generic suburbia’ area, not trying to be cool with any cinematic flashes. I wanted it to feel like this could happen in any backyard in the United States.
So that brings me to letting Transformers fans know that we have completed our five and half month shoot. We got back from a month long shoot in China. My crew and I had a fantastic time shooting in Hong Kong and Mainland China. It was an amazing experience, and I love the country. My cast was absolutely fantastic, and a very fun group to work with. We are working hard cutting the movie right now. I think the first piece comes out for the Super Bowl and a teaser right after that.
And yes, I’m very excited about this new movie.
Michael

“The first piece” Bay refers to will most likely be on par with the promised teaser: something very short, and probably quite arresting. Whatever you thought of Dark of the Moon, that first teaser was hard to shake.

As for Bay’s defensiveness, while some directors have gone on record to apologize for movies they’ve made (such as Steven Spielberg, who admitted that he made Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade to make up for Temple of Doom, which was too harsh and violent for many), viewers have come to expect the opposite from Bay. He has clearly made exactly the movies he wanted to make, and given their overwhelming financial success, who says he needs to apologize to anyone?

We have a general idea of what to expect from a Transformers movie directed by Michael Bay: recognizable human actors scrambling around delivering breathless dialogue scenes in between CGI action sequences of giant alien robots smashing into each other. On that level – if no other – the movies are enjoyable.

The inclusion of the Dinobots storyline and an all-new cast is supposed to set up its own story arc, which Bay may or may not hand off to a new creative team - time will tell if this new direction will be reflected in returning screenwriter Ehren Kruger’s script. Given the decided lack of a blood valve chamber in his previous Transformers scripts, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ Grimlock & Bumblebee Designs; Human Story Details

A kind reader asked that we update you on Transformers: Age of Extinction(a.k.a. Transformers 4), so we’re here to do just that. In truth, the whole world is about to get an “update” on the next installment in Michael Bay’s blockbuster franchise, as the first Transformers: Age of Extinction trailer will debut during the 2014 Super Bowl. But since our readers are sharp enough to be in the know before that, here’s the latest we have on the film.

-
ME GRIMLOCK

CLICK FOR FULL SIZE IMAGE

This backpack tie-in merchandising (courtesy of Smyths Toys) gives us a look at the character design for none other than Grimlock, fan-favorite character and leader of the Dinobots. The Dinobots have been been unofficially confirmed for the film for some time – and no doubt Bay and Co. were waiting for a nice trailer reveal to make ol’ Grimlock known – but as always, the Interwebs spin faster…

Right now, between this and the recently-revealed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles re-designs it seems that Michael Bay has architected successful new adaptations of some pretty outlandish characters (mutant turtles and robot dinosaurs). In short: That robot Dinosaur looks pretty badass from head to torso. I’m especially digging how the color scheme compliments Optimus. If his robot mode is as promising, then Bay’s Grimlock could deliver everything fans have been hoping for.

Here’s hoping it doesn’t fall apart when he opens his mouth…
-
THE NEW BUMBLEBEE

Carrera Toys
has given us a look at the (slightly) re-designed Bumblebee, who seems to be sporting a strange robo-loincloth thingy now… Will it ever stop with these movies?

Old Bumblebee

Aside from that, liking the darker gray tones that Bumblebee is sporting, and overall the whole thing has a more anime-themed edge to it. I dig it – how about you?

The Brazilian site Omelete has been known to break some stories before – the trick is getting them translated so that we can understand them. TFW2005 did just that and was kind enough to share the following story details about the human characters in Transformers: Age of Extinction.

If you don’t know, the new human cast consists of Mark Wahlberg as gear-head/inventor Cade Yeager; Bates Motel star Nicola Peltz as Tessa, Cade’s daughter; and Jack Reynor (Delivery Man) as Tessa’s boyfriend Shane. There’s also Kelsey Grammer as shady government man Harold Attinger, comedic actor T.J. Miller as Cade’s friend Lucas – with other actors like Stanley Tucci and Titus Welliver filling out the cast.

Now, thanks to Omelete we know more about the human story. Read at your own risk:

Spoiler: show
”Four years after the Battle of Chicago, the government is using reverse-engineered leftover technology to build their own Transformers. Joshua (Stanley Tucci) is an arrogant designer who believes the Autobots are “pieces of junk” and creating his own robots is a form of art. He’s fills basically the same role as Agent Simmons from the previous trilogy.
Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) is a widowed inventor who lives in a farm with his daughter Tessa (Nicola Peltz), unaware that she’s dating a race car driver, Shane (Jack Reynor). Cade finds a piece of Cybertronian technology and takes it back to his farm, but it is accidentally activated, leading the government and alien bounty hunters to his farm. The bounty hunters (it’s unclear if they’re connected to the Decepticons) have antigravity weapons which they use to abduct Tessa. In another scene, an entire transatlantic cruise ship is raised out of the ocean and crosses through a busy intersection while the protagonists are in the middle of a car chase.
Sophia Myles is playing Darcy, Joshua’s assistant and an archaeologist. Cade, Tessa, Shane, Joshua and Darcy are the main human character, and the main subplot is Shane trying to prove his worth to Cade. Also, Cade addresses Bumblebee as “Bee” and calms him down when Joshua trash-talks him, indicating he might be Bumblebee’s new owner.
Titus Welliver’s character, Savoy, is the leader of a team of agents sent by Harold Attinger (Kelsey Grammer) to capture the protagonists.”

Nicola Peltz in ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’

So basically, this is a similar premise as Transformers 1 with an adult component to bolster all the teen drama. How Grimlock factors into things and the robot villains the heroes will face remain to be seen; however, some alleged leaked plot details for the film point toward not only some iconic characters making an appearance, but also a bigger threat (literally) hanging over future Transformers films.

Be sure to check back with us on Super Bowl Sunday for the Transformers: Age of Extinction trailer.

[h=1]‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ Toy Images Reveal New Characters[/h]

Director Michael Bay’s fourth go-round with the Autobots and Decepticons, this summer’s Transformers: Age of Extinctionpromises to kick off a whole new trilogy with a fresh cast, including Mark Wahlberg, Kelsey Grammar, Stanley Tucci and Nicola Peltz.

Despite some fan backlash for various aspects of the previous films and vitriol from critics toward the franchise as a whole, Transformers remains a lucrative series for Paramount, capitalizing nicely on a combination of live-action/CGI giant alien robot battles and the nostalgia of fans who grew up with the toy line and cartoons and always wanted to see this stuff come to life on the big screen. Given their toy-line origins, fans have been eagerly awaiting a look at the designs for Age of Extinctions toy tie-ins, and now we have them. USA Today has provided some studio pictures of the set, but Screen Rant’s own Editor-In-Chief Kofi Outlaw was at the 2014 New York Toy Fair and brings us some up-close-and-personal looks, as well.

Check out the gallery below:

As for the further character details, here’s what was revealed at the Toy Fair:

  • There will be multiple Dinobots featured, including Slug, Scorn and Grimlock, and their robot forms will be included.
  • Galvatron has been confirmed, and will be the other big truck, an Argosy who was thought to be Ultra Magnus or Nemesis Prime.
  • Galvatron was indeed the robot with the arc reactor-style chest seen in the Age of Extinction Super Bowl trailer and will go grill-to-grill against Optimus Prime.
  • Hasbro will release a line of transforming Transformers, which will be ”one step/flip changers,” including a 22-inch Grimlock figure.
  • We also have looks at the samurai-style Autobot Drift, Decepticon bounty hunter Lockdown, the Autobot warrior Crosshairs and Autobot Hound.
  • The Toy Fair also premiered a new trailer for the video game Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark.

These toys look pretty sweet and will likely whet fans’ appetites until the film’s release. The inclusion of so many new Cybertronian characters reinforces the potential for a n

ew trilogy of films, which is supposed to “redesign” the whole franchise.
We’ve previously broken down that exciting Age of Extinction Super Bowl trailer, and one of its major questions was just how Optimus Prime came to be riding Grimlock in his dino form. These toys confirm the robot forms of the Dinobots – will Grimlock be significantly larger in scale? We’re bound to see more footage and character designs in the months to come, so stay tuned.

What do you think of the Transformers: Age of Extinction toy designs?

[h=1]Titus Welliver Says ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ Is ‘Not a Kids’ Movie’[/h]

Whether you’re eagerly anticipating or dreading the upcoming Transformers: Age of Extinction – the fourth flick in Michael Bays’ franchise – you no doubt were hit with a heavy wave of nostalgia when Grimlock the Dinobot made his debut in the film’s Super Bowl spot.

Of course, the Transformers series has always banked on longtime fans yearning to revisit their youth, but this time around, Transformers 4 appears to be making that its primary audience. Over a year ago, not long after it was confirmed Bay would return for the fourth film, the director promised it would completely redesign the franchise, and he wasn’t just talking about the robots. Transformers 4 also features an all-new cast, is set four years after the third film, and – according to actor Titus Welliver (the Man in Black on Lost) – it will have a darker, more mature tone.
Speaking with Nerdist, Welliver made it clear that he doesn’t consider Transformers 4 to be a children’s movie:

“It’s a bit more of a darker vision of the ‘Transformers’ world… It’s not a kids’ movie, I’ll tell you that much.”

In the four years since Transformers 3, humans have no doubts about the Transformers’ existence, and it’s likely we as a species have come to consider both the Autobots and Decepticons threats. This increased paranoia about the Transformers might play into why Age of Extinction would be a darker addition to the series. The battles won’t just be between giant robots, but also over people’s fears.

If this is the case, then Kelsey Grammer’s “counter intelligence” agent fits right in. Cybertronian technology would be a massive asset for any world power, making the Autobots not only targets of enemy attacks but possible abuse from their supposed allies. This kind of political edge could be the “darker vision” Welliver is alluding to. Plus, this new level of secrecy would make it necessary for the Autobots to really be robots in disguise and would explain the redesigns.

Then again, turning Transformers 4 into less of a smash ‘n’ bash, popcorn flick and more of a dark political thriller doesn’t seem to add up with what we know of Age of Extinction‘s plot. (There’s nothing sophisticated or mature about the Dinobots, no matter how badass they look.) But Bay has continued to hammer home the point that “there won’t be any goofiness” in Transformers 4, so does that mean it’ll be a totally humorless entry catering to a more adult audience? Probably not.

What do you make of Welliver’s comments that Transformers 4 isn’t “a kids’ movie“? Would making the film more mature be the right direction for the franchise?

Michael Bay Confirms Plans For New TRANSFORMERS Trilogy; Epic New Grimlock Still Released

Michael Bay confirms that Transformers: Age of Extinction is indeed the first part of a new trilogy, and addresses everything from Grimlock's origin story to the big screen debut of Lockdown and the decision to not bring back Shia Labeouf. Check it out!

"It’s kind of like a new Transformers," Michael Bay told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview. "We had three, the first trilogy, and this is going to be the next one." When asked to clarify whether or not he was referring to the next trilogy or simply the next movie, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles producer revealed: "Yeah, it’s the first of a new trilogy. I’m not necessarily sure that I’m doing [the others], but that’s what it’s meant for."

Now, as you can see from the epic new still above, the Dinobot known as Grimlock looks set to be a major new addition to the Transformers franchise. However, Bay wouldn't reveal just how much of his origin story will make it into this live action adaptation. "I like to keep things very much in the dark," he teased. "But yes, you’ll understand why they’re there when you see the movie. If you think I’m supposed to give away a lot of story points? No way! Keep it secret." However, the site does reveal that he'll be, "150 feet long from tail to nostrils, 63.5 feet tall from the ground to the top of his horns, and weigh 850 tons."

Bay then went on to talk about a Transformer who is neither Autobot or Decepticon, but is instead a bounty hunter named Lockdown, whose alternate form is a Lamborghini Aventador. "Lockdown is an interesting character. He travels the galaxy, he works for somebody else. And he’s here for one person, one alien, and then he’s out of here," Bay revealed. "So he doesn’t really want to take sides. The cause and balance of the galaxy is kind of messed up when different species play with different species. And that opens up a whole other gigantic world for Transformers. Lockdown’s ship has a lot of meaning that can go into other movies. There’s a lot of backstory about that ship that’s not laid out here. You’re going to see a few things where you’re like ‘What is that? And what is that?’ And you’re going to see a couple shots like, ‘Wait a minute, who are they?’ But we don’t answer those questions."

Finally, talk turned to what led to Shia Labeouf not returning for this fourth movie. "It’s all good. He’s a good guy, but three movies, the same guy, it’s time, you know what I’m saying? It’s always good to freshen it up and change the story." Bay then went on to insist that the eccentric actor wasn't fired; the director just felt like it was time for some fresh blood. "No, no it was mutual. He only wanted to do three, and I think that’s all. Then I pulled Mark into this after Pain & Gain, because we had a great time working together."

Entertainment Weekly has shared a recent interview with Bay in which he discusses the creative future of the Transformers franchise. Regarding Age of Extinction, Bay says:

“It’s kind of like a new ‘Transformers.’ We had three, the first trilogy, and this is going to be the next one… I’m not necessarily sure that I’m doing [the others], but that’s what it’s meant for.”

Though unrelated to EW‘s article, a number of just-released profile images reveal the extent and overall look of Age of Extinction‘s Transformer characters. Focusing largely on new characters – especially the much-hyped Dinobots – these images can be viewed below:

Though the full view of the updated looks for the classic roster of Dinobots is exciting, perhaps the most interesting reveals lie in the listed Decepticons. Not only do we get a good look at main heavy Galvatron, there’s also a clear view of Lockdown – also known as the mysterious figure in the film’s trailer whose entire head transforms into a cannon.

Bay shed quite a bit of light on Lockdown, stating:

“Lockdown is an interesting character. He travels the galaxy, he works for somebody else. And he’s here for one person, one alien, and then he’s out of here… So he doesn’t really want to take sides. The cause and balance of the galaxy is kind of messed up when different species play with different species. And that opens up a whole other gigantic world for Transformers.”

This is indeed fascinating, as it expands the potential conflict of Age of Extinction beyond the last three films’ Autobot/Decepticon war. Transformers fans will no doubt debate just who Lockdown’s employer is, and whether or not that revelation will provide the lead-in to the already-planned Transformers 5.

For now, you can place our money on the Quintessons, if only because seeing the cackling mechanical sadists realized on the big screen could be both disturbing and exhilarating. If thefranchise does indeed move in that direction, it will be interesting to see if it embraces the full space opera weirdness of the larger Transformers canon.

What do you think, Screen Rant readers? Do the Transformers’ new designs hit the right notes? And if Lockdown is indeed the gateway into a larger science fiction universe, do you approve?

Since Lockdown seems like the main villain and hes a bounty hunter, I think they are setting it up for the trilogy to converge on Unicron and Lockdown would probably be working for Unicron

[h=1]‘Transformers 4′ Casts John Goodman & Ken Watanabe as Autobot Voices[/h]

The fourth Transformers film, Transformers: Age of Extinction, will be a “soft reboot” for the film series. The requisite humans have been cast, the robots redesigned, and Transformers that fans have longed to see added to the roster are along for the ride; all in an effort to win back those who may have written off the franchise.

Changing up some of those key elements could very well prove crucial to keeping the Transformers franchise from getting stale. Two new Transformers to the film franchise who benefited greatly from the film’s simpler and slightly more nostalgic designs are Hound and Drift. Both characters have been designed with lots of little details and personality, and that’s something fans will surely appreciate. And while we got our first good look at these new autobots weeks ago, there hasn’t been any word on who’s providing their voices – until now.

In a press release on director Michael Bay’s website it was announced that John Goodman and Ken Watanabe have joined Age of Extinction as the voices of Hound and Drift, respectively.

Both actors are immediately recognizable not only for their distinct voices, but their wide range of past roles. Goodman is the only one of the two with any voice acting credits, most notably Sully in both Monsters Inc. and Monsters University.

As for the role of Hound, the Autobot has always been an army vehicle – Jeep or otherwise – so Goodman will very likely be playing him as a gruff Army general type. But Hound has always been very charmed by humans, so also expect Goodman’s Hound to be a real softie at heart.

Even without any voice acting experience, Watanabe shouldn’t feel too out of place lending his voice to the Autobot Drift. It’s evident from the character design that he’s been strongly influenced by the samurai, and Watanabe has portrayed a samurai more than a few times – most notably (to American audiences) in The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise.

Since then, Watanabe has been getting larger and larger American film roles: Batman Begins, Letters from Iwo Jima, Inception, and this month’s Godzilla. With an exceptional actor like Watanabe in the part, Drift – rumored to be a disgraced Decepticon coming to the Autobots for a second chance – looks to be a great addition to the robot cast.

On the casting, Bay had these comments:

I am pleased to welcome two gifted and versatile actors, John Goodman and Ken Watanabe, to the world of ‘Transformers’ and to reteam with Peter and Frank, who have brought ‘Transformers’ characters alive from the beginning. I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the best voice talent in the business, and together we will introduce several exciting new robots to fans of the franchise around the world.

With less than two months until Transformers 4 is expected in theaters, this casting does come off as almost last minute. But then again, there’s every reason to believe Goodman and Watanabe have already recorded their parts.

Are you excited to hear that John Goodman and Ken Watanabe have joined the cast of Transformers: Age of Extinction? Has this changed your outlook for the film?
