Thanks a lot for the info man. Waisay do you need USB and Flash drives for it etc? Secondly, would 40 Gig be ok if in the future PS allows users to download games and play them from the harddisk? I mean would the space be enough? cause blue ray disk's capacity is 20Gig right?

@ noman3000
Yes you can play it on an SDTV... At least I've started to believe in it.
Dude I've been doing loads of research on this. You'll be glad when you go through this page:

One query left. Can I find NTSC games from anywhere in Lahore. Yes PS3 is region free but can I find them?

Hello All,

Just came across this wonderful heaven for gamers here in Pakistan.

I am going to buy PS3 in a couple of days time. Would have bought it today had I not seen this site :p. Just want to clear some queries.

1) I am going for the 40 Gig Pal version of PS3 currently available in the market. (I'm from Lahore) The reason why I've opted for it is that I have a SDTV at home and I want to play GTA4 on it. I came to know from here that you can play gta4 on an SDTV only if you have the game and console of the same version (NTSC or PAL). Correct me if I am wrong. My TV does have NTSC 4.48 though but I am not sure if I can find an NTSC GTA4 from here.

2) Secondly, would I be able to run normally available DVDs (Costing 150 PKR for Master Prints) on my PS3? A friend of mine has the 80 Gig version. Not sure if it is Pal or NTSC but he claims to have run even pirated PS2 titles on it succesfully.

3) I was going through the net and found out that the 60 Gig version had extra USB slots and also had SCAD support. What is SCAD support and is it possible to find a copy of this 60 Gig version?

Cheers, :)
Hi darktaktiX. Welcome to PG.

1) The problem is not with your TV. Your TV could be multi system but still won't change anything. It's an issue with GTA4 on SDTVs, it works only on consoles of the same region in SD mode. If you're buying a console from here, why not get a PAL PS3?

Your other two questions are mainly concerned with the fact that whether you'll be left out on some options if you buy the newer 40GB or the latest 80GB models (which are essentially the same as 40GB but with a bundled Dual Shock 3 gamepad and larger HDD).

First you have to ask yourself, do you need extra USB ports? Do you need backwards compatibility for PS2? The newer models don't officially support PS2 games original OR pirated. However, work is underway for PS2 emulation on any PS3. And yes, it'd prolly only work with pirated games. Pity, eh? ;)

Ask yourself how important pirated PS2 games are to you on your PS3. If they can be neglected, then get a PAL 40GB PS3. InshAllah you won't have any issues.

@Shyber You the man!

Yeah will buy a PAL version definitely. Will see if I can find an old 60 Gig one. Otherwise will go for a 40 Gig Pal cause can't find a 80 Gig Pal. All of em are NTSC. BTW should I wait for the 160 GB versions to come? I mean I really wanna play GTA4 but since 160 GB has already been released. Would that much space of any use in downloading or playing games from hard disk? Or for any improvement other PS3 gaming experience!

MOST IMPORTANT!
How can I check if the system is brand new and not been used? *duh*

The PS3 I bought had a warranty card in it, with a stamped date of manufacture. Normaly shops here sell PS3s that come in baggage, but of course these PS3s are bought from shops abroad. It's likely that they come with Sony's warranty certificate. Mine was a week old, so even if it was used, it wasn't THAT much used. Plus, boot up. There are some settings that are available only at bootup and check if there are any profiles that exist in the system. That'll give you an idea.

Of course, all this can be reset so best is to buy from a reliable guy. It's pretty sleek so you may look for finger print marks too. LOL.

About the HDD space, well, PS3 allows you swap a bigger HDD whenever you want. It supports normal Laptop/PC Sata 2.5" discs. So if 40GB is too less for you, you may swap it with a 500GB one later on :)

6.Do you play the Ps3 on HDTV or an LCD monitor ?
I play it on a 22" LCD set to accept 1080p signal over HDMI.
Umm you're talking about a normal LCD Screen that we use for computers? Which Manufacturer and what would be the cost of one? Would I require any modifications in PS3 to make it compatible with it?

Cheers

Yes, "normal" LCD screens for computers. All you gotta do is ensure that the LCD has a DVI port and is HDCP compliant. Then, you'll have to buy a 800-1200RS HDMI to DVI cable and you're all set to play your PS3 in HD on a computer LCD.

You can get these LCDs NEW for as low as 13000Rs. Check out Galaxy.com.pk:

13800

The graphics would match of larger LCD counterparts right?
Oh and is there any way you can plug in for it to receive TV cable signals as well? *greedy*
Lastly, what would be a good option for audio in this case when you have an LCD plugged in, or do they have speakers too?

check sony's outlet they just might have some 60gb versions left.I dont you'll ever need more than 2 usb's...i never had used my 3rd and 4th one..lol.And yes there are rumors of a emulator for non-backwards compatible models...so if you cant find a 60gb sku..buy a 40gb,and upgrade to a bigger hdd later on.The GTAIV bundle would be a good go..

well if you're gonna buy any of those lcd's that shyber mentioned..all of them have a vga and a dvi port.Connect your PS3 through the dvi
(hdmi-dvi cable) port...and get an external tv tuner for like a 1000rs and connect it to the VGA port. Now your lcd has become your tv too

For external audio for your ps3..just plug the composite cables(comes with the ps3) in the back of your ps3's av slot.Go into audio settings and select "AV" as output...it will channel the sound through the AV slot and plug only the red and white cables in your speakers :)

so basically,

hdmi port = for video
av port = for audio

oh and be sure to check that your LCD is hdcp supported before purchasing..otherwise PS3 wont work.

Shyber the LCDs that you listed do have HDCP support then or not? Cause I checked the sites but couldn't figure if they had that support or not? How can you check it if the local guy at Radio and TV center does know what it is?

It is mentioned on the box. Any screen that supports HDCP states it. If it doesn't, it's likely that it is NOT HDCP. Never take risk in this regard. Select a model number from the internet and buy the exact same thing.

For example, I checked the internet and I saw Acer X223WD and noted that it supports HDCP. However, when I went to the shop, the guys showed me Acer X223W which looked EXACTLY like the one I saw on the net but it wasn't. There was a difference. The 'D' was missing. When you check a model on the net, make sure all the letters are there :p

Click on the links I gave. All these models support HDCP. And it is clearly stated.
