Final Fantasy XIII Information

FINAL FANTASY XIII for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 systems
A tale of souls from a futuristic civilization illuminated by the Light of the Crystal

This eagerly anticipated title takes full advantage of the PlayStation 3 system's advanced hardware, providing tangible, intuitive controls while delivering seamless transitions between real-time gameplay and stunning in-game cinematics. The latest in cutting-edge technology has been utilized in development of FINAL FANTASY XIII, thus making this newest addition to the FINAL FANTASY series worthy of the title "next generation."

~Quoted from Square Enix's Main E3 Site~

Final Fantasy XIII is a Square Enix made Role Playing Game in development for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. It was announced on May 8, 2006 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles as a Playstation 3 exclusive, however at E3 2008, it was also announced for the Xbox 360 for North America, and Europe/Other.

In Final Fantasy X, Square Enix attempted to create the best traditional RPG, for Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix plans to ring in the next generation of Role Play Games.

"To be more specific, in the traditional RPG, the game flow is pretty much the same: You go into town, talk to people, go out of town, and enter battles. We want to start looking at that flow and revolutionize it in a way that it may surprise people to learn that this is a Final Fantasy game. I'm thinking it will be an extraordinary new form in RPGs." -Final Fantasy XIII Producer, Yoshinori Kitase

Thus far, Square Enix is proud that it has created visuals in Final Fantasy XIII, via their Playstation 3/Xbox 360 engine, "Crystal Tools", that people have a hard time telling the difference between real-time graphics and CG. Still though, Square Enix remains vigilant in maintaining the all around quality of experience of Final Fantasy in Final Fantasy XIII.

"It's never solely about graphics, but at the same time you can't deny the meaning of the looks for the experience as a whole. This technique allows us to create characters so realistic that the player perceives them as being alive. It adds something emotional to the entire game experience." -Final Fantasy XIII Director, Motomu Toriyama

For Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix has said it is considering online integration, as well as Sixaxis support. Furthermore, due to the capacity of Blu Ray and the addition of the hard disk in the Playstation 3, Final Fantasy XIII will be nearly load-time free.

Crystal Tools
Final Fantasy XIII will be using the white engine to create the game. This will allow for seamless graphics with billions of polygons on the screen. The E3 2006 trailer is supposedly not done using the completed Crystal Tools.

Final Fantasy XIII Story

Little is known about the story behind Final Fantasy XIII thus far, but Square Enix has dropped a few details about the prologue to the story of Final Fantasy XIII, and it's theme of determination, fantasy and futurism.

What we know is that there are two prominent parts of the world in Final Fantasy XIII, Cocoon, and Pulse. Cocoon is a haven from humans, and was created by one of the powerful crystals in the game. Cocoon is permanently air born high in the Clouds. Below Cocoon is Pulse, which is believed to be the entire planet, Square has merely referred to it as what is below Cocoon. Crystals in Final Fantasy XIII are beings themselves, with specific motives and plans, and are far superior to humans, it seems.

Nonetheless, while this specific Crystal (or possibly a couple working together), the one that created and maintains Cocoon, resided in Pulse, it is said that in determining the effect Pulse would have on humans, this Crystal decided what would be the best environment suitable for humans, and thus created Cocoon. It is unclear if humans existed before the creation of Cocoon. Cocoon itself is a highly advanced society in Final Fantasy XIII, still protected and maintained by the Crystal.

Even more broad is that a battle of the gods lies behind Final Fantasy XIII, but nothing more is known about this. In Cocoon, the citizens, and holy government, prosecute anyone in Cocoon who has been, or is believed to be, influenced in any way by the people of pulse, and are banished from Cocoon.

Even more vague, the a Crystal in Pulse, as a symbol of piece, chose the people of Pulse and determined their fate and led the world. Then she was chosen, Lightning, as the enemy of mankind who will destroy the world. This could mean that Cocoon plans to somehow destroy Pulse a la Kefka in FFVI, and Lightning is chosen to stop them, or it could mean something different entirely.

In the beginning of Final Fantasy XIII, all of Pulse is pretty outraged with Cocoon, and they organize an assault against Cocoon, or which Lightning leads. This leads to a quasi-revolution. It's said that Cocoons strengths as a fortress are susceptible to infiltration, which furthermore is frightening to the citizens of Cocoon as this could open up Cocoon to possibly falling from its place in the sky.

The only other known thing is that the Crystal of Cocoon is influencing others fate as well, and choosing defenders for Cocoon, to compliment it's already established defenses. They are said to be called Rushi, and are out to defend the Crystal of Cocoon, and Cocoon itself, and to take down Lightning.

ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
World/Locations
Pulse

Pulse is believed to be the planet of Final Fantasy XIII, also none as the world below Cocoon. Pulse is a dangerous place inhabited by giant beast, animals and monsters, as well as extremely powerful self-aware Crystals. There are people in Pulse, and they are the enemy of Cocoon. From what is known so far, it is possible the first people in Pulse actually can from Cocoon, but this is not know as fact as of yet. In the game, the people of Pulse unite in their hatred of Cocoon and with Lightning, lead an assault on Cocoon to bring them to justice.

"A vast world stretching out beneath the floating shell of Cocoon, and the source of lurking menace" - E3 2008 Trailer

ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
Cocoon

A haven for humankind, Cocoon was born of one of the powerful Crystals of Pulse (possibly multiple Crystals). This powerful self-aware Crystal speculated on what the best environment for humankind would be, and in turn, created Cocoon, which remains afloat in the sky high above in the clouds. Cocoon itself is a highly advanced civilization, and looks to be about the size of a fair sized city. As well, Cocoon is still maintain by the Crystal, but it remains unclear of humans existed before the creation of Cocoon or not.

During Final Fantasy XIII, the citizens of Cocoon, and their holy governments greatest fear is those within Cocoon who have been influenced in anyway by Pulse. Anyone suspected of this is immediately prosecuted and banished from Cocoon, to Pulse. Cocoon's strengths as a fortress are said to be susceptible to infiltration, which has spread fear within Cocoon of it being blown out of the sky.

Final Fantasy XIII Characters

Lightning

Lightning is the main character of Final Fantasy XIII, and her name, Lightning, is actually merely a code name she has issued to herself, hiding her true full name.

Lightning is said to be reluctant to talk about herself and her past. Mentally and physically, Lightning is a strong independent woman. She's muscular (but not overly muscular as Character Designer Tetsuya Nomura thought anymore and people wouldn't like as a main character) but she is not sweet. She is strict to herself, to others, and has little respect for whiners. She is said to be comparable to a noble soldier.

As seen in the trailers thus far, Lightning wields a unique sword with the ability to transform into an oversized handgun.

Voiced by: Watanabe Akino(Japan)

ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
Snow Villiers

Snow Villiers is a member of Coocon's fal'Cie, one of the "chosen people". His character was designed with the idea that he should be able to carry a grown person under each arm and be able to run with them. He hasn't been seen yet standing next to anyone, so it's hard to guess roughly how tall he actually is.

He is seen for a moment in the Final Fantasy XIII trailers on the Shiva Sisters Motorcycle, pulling up guns blazing to what appears to be saving Lightning. He has said to be a Rushi, of whom are out to protect Cocoon, which complicates matters as to why he would kill Cocoon troops and save Lightning.

Snow's weapon of choice so far is a large enemy pistol. As well he rides around on a motorcycle that can transform into the ice summon Shiva, although the safety of an icy motorcycle is debatable. His style of combat is said to be humourous as he is a wild character. Snow has been nicknamed Mr. 33cm because of his enormous shoe size.

ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
Vanille

girl with red-brown hair worn in pigtails who lives in Pulse. In a trailer, she was featured in the company of both Lightning and Snow. Her weapon resembles a modernized bow, and she was seen performing a summon using a disc in the trailer. Her name was mentioned at the Tokyo Game Show.

ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
Sazh Katzroy
He is a middle-aged man with an afro who Lightning knows from her time serving in the military. Sazh wields dual pistols, his strong point is striking enemies from a distance. He is a good combination with the close-range Lightning. He has a baby chocobo as a pet that appears to live in his afro. He is described as a middle-aged man with good judgment and moral discernment. He has a gentle personality and is easlily moved to tears, and joins the party early in the game
_____________________________
Blond military woman
A high-ranking commander with knee-length blond hair and glasses working for the Holy Government. She uses a high-powered sniper rifle. She also interrogates the pigtailed girl in a trailer.
ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
Pony tailed man
An intimidating man wearing his hair up in a ponytail, who is seen leading the Cocoon army in a trailer.

ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
Final Fantasy XIII Battle System

The concept for Final Fantasy XIII's battle system is to maintain the strategic nature of command-based battles. The system stemmed from a desire to create battles similar to those found in Final Fantasy VII Advent Children. Like those in Final Fantasy XII, battle sequences are integrated into the world environment. The Active Time Battle (ATB) system will return, and it works differently from its predecessors. Users will be able to chain large amounts of commands together in order to achieve attack bonuses .

The battle system that was shown during the E3 2006 trailer was only a prototype. Recently, Square Enix showed battle footage in various Japanese magazines and trailers which introduced a new interface. In battle, the player can only control one character at a time out of a party of up to three. Multiple commands can be stacked into slots per turn and released at the same time to form a combo. The amount of command slots increases as the characters grow in strength. These commands include series staples such as Attack, Fire, Blizzard and Cure, as well as new ones such as Launch, which sends the enemy up in the air. The game does not make use of MP but introduces "cost points" for each command. Cost points determine how many times the commands can be used per turn. The player is able to view the HP and name of the enemy before engaging it in battle. When the player engages an enemy, the camera moves to another position and the battle menu appears, making the battle transitions nearly seamless.

Final Fantasy XIII's gameplay system still uses the multiple command system and the time gauge bar just like the ATB. However, the difference between this system and the ATB gauge is that commands can still be placed in the slots even though the bar has run out and the actions will be executed once the required slots are filled up. This however will affect the chain combo hits as the combo has been interrupted.

The after-battle victory screen in XIII holds information such as the time it took to finish the battle, the highest number of combos executed, the number of break attacks and the quality of battle which is determined by a ranking of one to five stars. The breaks refer to the times when an enemy enters a state of non-retaliation. This occurs when a chain combo has been maintained for a certain period of time on an enemy. When a high level combo has been achieved, the enemy will glow red and enter a break state, as indicated by the break bar. At that point the player will be able to execute the highest amount of damage to the target. However at that point, the chain bar will deplete slowly and when it is empty the break state becomes invalid.

A special command in the system is called Launch. This is used to toss enemies into the air and allows the character to perform mid-air combos on the opponent. This attack is useful when dealing huge amounts of damage to a target, especially when the target is in a break state. However it may be difficult to use this command on larger enemies.

Magic is restricted to characters that belong to the group called l'Cies. Magic is not readily available in the beginning of a game, but it is bestowed upon the characters after a certain event. Because magic cannot be used outside of battle, the HP of the party is completely restored after each battle.

The classic summoned creatures will return in Final Fantasy XIII. Shiva returns in the form of a pair of sisters who can merge into a motorcycle, which the character Snow rides, and can use ice to create a path to drive on. Carbuncle emerges from a disc-like object when it is touched by the character Vanille. Ifrit and Siren also appear in shown footage. Producer Yoshinori Kitase has confirmed that Bahamut will also appear in the game.

ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
Final Fantasy XIII Summons

Shiva

Shiva is the only summon that has been seen by the public in motion so far. Shiva transforms into a motorcycle. Yes, you read correctly. Shiva not only transforms, but is also two woman, working together as one summon. Mystery character, Mr. 33cm, is seen riding around the Shiva motorcycle in the trailers.

ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
Ifrit

Demon hell spawn from, you guessed it, hell. At least it has always looked that way. Nothing has been revealed about Ifrit so far other than his image. Ifrit historically is a fire elemental summon, and surprise surprise, he continues to be so.

ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
Carbuncle

Carbuncle is small, green, and has an oversized ruby jammed into its puny forehead. Carbuncle is said to transform, or be summoned, from a disc, as seen in one of the non-public Final Fantasy XIII trailers.

ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
Siren

Siren is also seen in one of the non-public Final Fantasy XIII trailers. Toting a harp and a funky hair, Siren is a female summon.
______________

Odin

His basic physical characteristics are that of a demonic-looking knight with horns, a long, curved scimitar as his weapon, and a cape. This progressed to also include a lance-type weapon called Gungir . He always is seen on his horse, who takes on demonic-type attributes as well, such as red eyes and body armor.

ReZoN is now officially my favorite member on PG.
It's official now, no matter what he says, Shyber likes Uncharted 2 more than Final Fantasy XIII :p
He didn't want to share review of Uncharted 2 with GoldenHawk but is happy to let ReZoN take charge of Final Fantasy XIII. It only means love for Uncharted 2, while only slight fondness for Final Fantasy XIII

I don't think NTSC-UC and PAL versions are gonna release simultaneously. PAL owners will have to wait for some time. And in that time Shyber is gonna end the game on his PS3 and write the review :p (unless CerebralTiger does it first :wink2:)

There are definitely a lot of FF fans on PG and they're all gonna post in this thread,So maybe even I'll become a fan once i play #13:p

But a question:Are FF story lines connected to the previous game's storyline? If that is so then it might get very confusing to play a game that has had 12 games before it.

Although I can easily guess that it is true I just want confirm it:p

^^What I'm trying to ask is that will there be elements in the story that will be connected to the story's of the previous games which will make it difficult to figure stuff out?

Will it be like AC and AC2 where the story's are so involved with each other that if you don't play AC you won't understand what's going on in AC2?

nope, all of the games are in different worlds and are not connected in anyway...
