Dead Trigger Devs: Android Piracy Is So Bad, We Might As Well Give Our Game Away
Dead Trigger on Android cost, until just now, a dollar. It was quite a deal for a mobile FPS from a critically acclaimed studio. Unfortunately, Android users are apparently such cheapskates that even a dollar was just too much to ask.
Madfinger Games summed it up simply:
"At first we intend to make this game available for as many people as possible – that's why it was for as little as buck. – It was much less than 8$ for SHADOWGUN but on the other hand we didn't dare to provide it for free, since we hadn't got XP with free-to-play format so far. – However, even for one buck, the piracy rate is soooo giant, that we finally decided to provide DEAD TRIGGER for free."
In other words, if you love the game, expect to see way more advertising.
Google is offering new encryption features
that make stealing apps a lot more difficult, but the damage has been done in this particular case.
So if you've been wondering why giant publishers like EA and Ubisoft are talking up free-to-play gaming and talking about how freeium games and microtransactions are the wave of the future… here's your answer.
