I am having a strange problem with my XFX 6950 1GB GPU. When I install drivers, I get a black screen as soon as the Windows log-on screen arrives. When no drivers are installed, or when I am in BIOS, there is no black screen.

I tried 14.4 drivers and also 13.12 drivers but getting the same black screen problem on log-on screen. Sometimes there is no black screen even when drivers are installed, but as soon as I do even the slightest of activity on the PC, I get the black screen.

This is really infuriating. Even though I have used my GPU for approx 3 years now, I still want to use it more since it can run pretty much any game out there easily. Please help me solve this problem.

I have cleaned contacts, tried pulling all components out and putting them back in, removing all USB drives etc. Temperatures hover around 48*C on idle. And around 73*C on load.

My PC information is given in the drop-down beneath my avatar and username (on the left).

shary first of all install Windows 8.1 and forget Windows 7 now. then try installing old drivers like one you got with your gpu and if problem persist remove the gpu and check it on another pc if you can. if its not driver's bug it would be either psu or gpu itself.

Did you try using some driver cleaner software before installing new one? (try DDU)

How can you suggest installing old drivers that come with the bundled disk? The HD 6950 came way before even Windows 8 came out, there's going to be some compatibility issue for sure.

It's not recommended, neither AMD recommends using such tools. A simple overwrite or even uninstall/install from Add or Remove Programs in Windows is enough.

OP. Do one thing, remove all previous drivers and run Windows update, there you must see AMD WHQL-certified drivers try those and report back.

Yup your point is right but i actually meant either install windows 8.1(because Windows 8.1 automatically detect and install best available drivers) or install old drivers.that was a typo.

I installed clean Win 8.1 yesterday and was getting this problem after installing drivers. I guess the card is dying now.

I think I found the problem and it is hardware related. I removed the graphics card and unscrewed the top. I saw 2 of those very very small brown capacitors (SMD capacitors?) on it were broken. It might be because of excessive heat or something. But they are definitely broken.

Something like this, but not as bad as this.

Any idea where I can get the exact size capacitors, because there aren't any indications on the capacitors whatsoever. I can solder them myself if I can find them. I found one capacitor in the SATA chip of a hard-drive but it is in functional state and I don't wanna remove it from there.

Should I just take my graphics card to an electronics component shop and ask them about these capacitors? Is there any guarantee that these broken capacitors are the reason why my GPU isn't working properly?

I didn't remove heatsink because the temperatures of the GPU were pretty great in idle and load IMO.

Before you take it to a repair shop, first check it on some other system. If it behaviour remains unchanged, than you may consider repairing etc.

Now that I have seen with my eyes that capacitors are blown, should I risk the card further by putting it in a computer? :( I think I will wait for a few days (5-7 days) until my cousin fixes it (he will do it for very cheap). I will definitely update you guys if it works. I just don't wanna risk it right now because this card is very dear to me :)

You may ask 'Mave' for these capacitors as he's a collector of dead gpu's.

Have sent it to cousin, and he just got off the phone with me. He is saying that his guy is fixing the GPU, and it could be done easily (cuz the faulty capacitors were identified easily). After it is fixed, my bro will bring it back (by Monday I think). Will update y'all about it. Insha'Allah it will work!

Ae Allah :D the problem has been fixed as per my knowledge. Running games easily now without any problems. Before fixing, it would give black screen on boot and computer would not respond. Now it is running games like Trine 2 etc (dont have any games since windows8.1 was newly installed :)).

Before installing drivers, games through the gpu were running at 2 or 3 fps. now 60 fps as usual.

Glad to hear that. Seems like your cousin came through with the transistor fix. Congrats (y)

You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
