Playstation Sony has an Xbox Game Pass competitor coming to PS4 and PS5, new report says

Bloomberg says service codenamed Spartacus might offer PS1, PS2, and PSP games



Sony is reportedly planning a new subscription service aimed at competing with Microsoft’s popular Xbox Game Pass, according to Bloomberg. Reportedly codenamed Spartacus, the unannounced subscription service could offer access to retro PlayStation games on top of existing PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now benefits.

Spartacus would merge two existing services, Bloomberg reports: PlayStation Plus, the subscription that unlocks online multiplayer in many PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games and offers monthly access to a library of titles; and PlayStation Now, the cloud-gaming streaming service that gives subscribers access to PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 games on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.

Bloomberg says the new PlayStation subscription, which would retain the PlayStation Plus branding, would be multi-tiered, and only the highest level would allow access to retro PS1, PS2, PS3, and PlayStation Portable games.

Polygon has reached out to Sony for comment on Bloomberg’s report and will update when the company responds.

Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscription services launched in 2010, and initially offered subscribers access to digital bonuses like free games, game trials, and other perks for $49.99 per year. Sony later made PlayStation Plus a requirement for online play on PlayStation 4, and raised the price of an annual subscription to $59.99 in 2016. A subscription for PlayStation Now also costs $59.99 annually. Bloomberg’s report did not offer details on planned pricing for Spartacus, which is said to launch in spring 2022.

I mean, despite what some stalwarts on PG said, this was inevitable. They don’t have the money to pull day one first party like MS on the service, but have to start somewhere.

    BTW, i started Ghost of Tsushima, and it got me hooked within the first couple of minutes. I already know It's gonna be a memorable experience. This is how you make a proper Samurai game. Not that SJW game Ubisoft is making.

    That's still higher than it's total play length. A 5 hour campaign for a $50 game is downright scammy.

    I have a PS5 but I am not satisfied with the experience. I am currently saving for a 4080 64 GB rig soon. Bit will wait for Pro if performance improves. This gen has been so bad I don't plan on buying consoles anymore for AAA gaming.

    Consoles were my main platform ever since Atari 2500. But now I think it's not worth it as PC especially with DLSS deliver far smoother performance. AW2 on console didn't even had ray tracing and ran below 30fps. Similar issues plagues DD2 on consoled.

    As per WCCF Tech review, Xbox Series X doesn't even maintain a consistent FPS and sometimes drops into the mid-20fps range. That's unacceptable, tbh.

    Score 1 for game pass. I wouldn't pay full price for this at retail either.

    Just downloaded my first legit digital PC game on GoG at a discount of $8: Two Point Hospital. The same team behind Theme Hospital Two Point Studios now part of Sega. And I am having more fun than most recent AAA games except of course BG3.

    PC Gamer score of 58/100 for Hellblade 2??? Is it really worse than Gollum that was 64/100? Microsoft games can't even come close to high scores of Sony exclusives apparently.
