Box Office: 'Pirates 3' Lagging 'Spidey 3

Headline as of early Sunday AM: Johnny Can't Beat Spidey: 'Pirates 3' Only Loots $116M Friday-Saturday-Sunday But Sets Biggest Holiday Weekend Record

SUNDAY AM: I'm hearing the No. 1 movie in the country Disney's Pirates Of The Caribbean: At Worlds End found $38 million in box office treasure Saturday, down 12% from its $43 million on Friday. Sunday is projected at $18.5 mil. So that's $116 mil for its 3-day weekend from 4,362 theaters, well behind Sony's Spider-Man 3's record-setting $151 mil from 4,252 venues earlier this month. Looks like P3's ass-numbing 2-hour, 48 minute running time has dug into its box office along with the film's middling reviews and its Thursday night soft opening. But Johnny Depp and the gang will still set a precedent for a 4-day holiday weekend with its projected $146 million. (Note that none of the above figures count Thursday night's $14 million gross receipts...) Meanwhile, the 2nd place film, DreamWorks Animation's Shrek The Third is badly trailing Shrek 2 because of all those bad reviews. Over the same Memorial Weekend starting its second week out, the threequel's Friday-Saturday-Sunday figure is $51 mil -- even with big Saturday matinees for the kiddie fare in 4,172 theaters -- while the sequel did a monster $95 mil. Experts are expecting Shrek The Third to post $70 mil for the 4-day holiday weekend. Its cume after the weekend should be $215.6 mil. Third-place Spider-Man 3 spun $13.7 mil for Friday-Saturday-Sunday in 3,723 playdates while it's 4-day holiday figure should be $17.5 mil. The Webbed Wonder's domestic cume is now $303.4 mil. And let's not forget Spidey's international gross has now passed $500M so the threequel is at $800+ million as of today. As for the rest of the Top 10, Pirates took a lot of wind out of their sails. Lionsgate's new horror film from Lionsgate, Bug, directed by The Exorcist's Billy Friedkin, opened with $3.2M for Fri-Sat-Sun from 1,661 theaters. Fox Searchlight's Sundance Film Festival find Waitress, starring Felicity's Keri Russell, stayed No. 5 earning a $3M FSS from just 510 venues. Chart for 3-day weekend:

pirates 3 had a very lower then expected launch, shrek 3 is doing worse then expected as well, the only movie thats really done what was expected of it is spiderman 3.

err...you never said anything spiderman 1 with half the budget earned more than that, as I PREDICTED after breaking opening records the bomba set in spidey 3 will not even reach 1 billion.

i'd suggest you recheck that spiderman 3 topic, i distinctly said that movie will make 800 million easily, and it has, and its still gaining..

and that pretty much makes your claim of either movie not making more then their first or seconds false.

Not really, it hasn't earned as much as Spidey 1 YET though it probably will but "barely" rather than "easily" and that's pretty disappointing performance after breaking all kinds of records.

well you also liked SM3, lets just say you have a umm different taste. Though i big reason is the movie is 3 hours long and unless you are Return of the King that's not a good thing.

considering it gets released right in the heel of two other biggest movies of the year, one can't use the word disappointing here .. and yes it will pretty easily pass the first movie too, you'll see .. probably stop near or beyond 900 million or so

if a movie is 3 hour long then it is not good???the story of the film takes so many twists and turns that 3 hours must be essential for the completion of the film.Johny Depp (infact there are many J depps in the movie)worked superbly and the other's acting is good too.Direction is good,special effects are at its best and most importantly story is good too.What else is required for a good movie???And i am not the single soul in the world or here at PG who likes SP3.

In Spiderman, you just have to look at the screen having your brain turned off, and you'll still understand everything because there is nothing to think about.

A good movie also has a messege behind it sometimes, if not always. Movies that try to be philosophical are truely the best movies ever to exist (and are very rare, for that matter).

There you have it, a qualitive defination of the word 'good movie'. Life of good movies for me:

Just because its called "American beauty" doesn't mean its a dumb romance movie.
