2.40 firmware bricks some PS3 consoles
Many rejoiced late last night when Sony posted the 2.40 firmware update for the Playstation 3. The 2.40 brought a number of improvements to the platform including in-game XMB accesses, a new Trophy system similar in concept to Xbox 360 Achievements, and the ability for gamers to use music playlists within games (provided that the game developers provides a patch to support the feature). Shortly after the update went live, many users began reporting problems with the update. A
thread over at the official Playstation 3 forums is currently up to 61-pages and is filled with a number of irate owners.
According to
Kotaku, the
update is causing some controllers to malfunction, and in many cases, it bricks the system altogether. All Playstation 3 systems -- 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB -- have an equal chance in having problems with the update, so no one is safe.
There are currently numerous theories and workarounds being proposed by forum-goers, but no one fix has been found to fix everyone's 2.40 firmware woes.
Because of the widespread problems, Sony decided to pull firmware update. In a
statement released this afternoon, the company said, "In order to further assess the issue, we have temporarily taken the firmware offline for further testing. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up."
No other details were provided on when the "fixed" 2.40 firmware will be uploaded or if a 2.41 firmware will simply be issued to address the problems at hand.

Update: Via Sony's
online help desk in response to the 2.4 issues:
"The PLAYSTATION 3 system software version 2.40 has been temporarily taken offline and will not be available for download as our engineers examine any possible issues with this update. The Knowledge Center will be updated with information as it becomes available; please check back here for further details."
After countless reports of problems across the Internet (
here,
here, and
here) caused by the long-awaited PS3 2.40 Software Update, Sony has gone ahead and pulled the update.
Many users have been a bit befuddled, after being able to access PSN with only 2.36, however on a check of the latest available firmware, it is indeed
listed as 2.36.
We can only assume that there is a major bug in the newest release. One would assume it would be detected and patched before it was rolled out en-masse, however it appears that it was not.
The big question, aside from 'When is 2.40 coming back out?' is that will Sony repair consoles that this update broke without cost, or will they still insist on charging their repair fee?
According to our member
boonflop, Sony insisted on charging him, once his PS3 bricked after updating to 2.40. Hopefully Sony they will change their tune after this debacle, and fix these consoles for free.

PlayStation 3 gamers, you may want to hold off on
updating your systems to Firmware 2.40. There have been numerous reports of consoles freezing straight after, or even during, updating their systems to 2.40. You may have to wait longer for
trophies and in-game XMB.
According to the reports, there doesn't seem to be any pattern as to which models of the PlayStation 3 are affected - all systems from 20 GB to 80 GB are affected. It seems that after applying 2.40, their systems just froze.
If you find your system freezing, some gamers have found that removing and reformatting their hard drive will get the system to boot up again - although this would mean that all your data would be lost. Hopefully,
Sony will release a better solution.
We'll keep you updated on further developments, and certainly after Sony makes an official statement. Check back for updates.

*Update* We just got wind from
Kotaku that Sony has now pulled out the PS3 FW 2.40 update. The latest system update that you will now find online is FW 2.36. Furthermore, our very own tipster,
Zero.Wing, reports of a failed attempt at trying to get the the system update:
Managed to sign in to my PSN account at around 20:30 GMT whilst still running firmware 2.36.
Tried to update using system update from
XMB but system reports that I have the highest firmware available installed.
Tried to get the update using a PC from
http://eu.playstation.com but am getting a 404 error.
As stated by Kotaku, this may be a temporary measure to curb any further problems that PS3 users may experience. We'll bring you guys news once Sony's released any official statement regarding this matter and when FW 2.40 goes back online.
Thanks to Zero.Wing, i3obtl, and darkliger666 for the info!
