PC Places to buy Games?

Im living in london for a few years now.. I used to play games when I was in pakistan but the only places I knew to get the games was either cracked ones from torrents or stores here in london. but now im hearing of things like 'steam' seems like some sort or online game store...

are there places online to get the games? whats steam.. what are other such places?

i've been busy with work and sorta fallen behind on all this.. would be thankful to everyone who'd update me on this.

I like upcoming games like GTA V, Watch Dogs etc.

you wont have to pay for it after release or on release date.
