I think Linear better defines games where you're only going in a straight line, or corridor if you will, without much in the way of backtracking, side tracking etc. Resident Evil doesn't fall on that at least.
Well, in that case, the earlier RE games take place in narrow corridors for the most part, with some courtyards connecting them here and there. There is some backtracking involved, but once you clear an area, it's not possible for you to go back to it. RE1 was somewhat of an exception because the whole game took place inside a mansion.
Even if you talk about game progress in a story manner, the original RE games had like 6 endings each, determined by various choices in the game.
Yeah, I can agree to that bit, although the variation in endings was quite minor and driven by a handful of basic choices.
Resident Evil 4 mechanics still work well.
Probably for you, but it's cringe-worthy for me to go back and play that game with the realization that I can't even move while I aim. And that's not the only particular thing that bothers me about it. RE6 took care of that issue, and even then it's riddled with flaws that have been around since the RE4 days.
You and Chandoo are RE fanboys, so I wouldn't expect you to agree with me anyway. I mean, I still remember that you guys actually enjoyed RE6.
Capcom should sell the RE franchise to Bethesda, so they may let Mikami handle it. That's the only way it'll ever have a chance of returning to its former glory.
