New Story Trailer For Horizon Zero Dawn Teases New Friends And Foes

A brand new trailer for Horizon: Zero Dawn has just dropped courtesy of Sony, offering a little more substance to the already gorgeous world we've previously seen.

As the trailer opens, Aloy's tribe has been massacred -- prompting her departure in search of this powerful, unknown enemy. Traversing desolate lands populated by massive, mechanoid beasts, Aloy arrives in neighboring Meridia to warn them of the impending threat.

It appears as though the robot fauna are somehow being raised and controlled with a corrupting force wielded by the leader of a band of masked warriors. To what ends he plans to use them isn't clear, but it isn't likely to be pleasant for the natives. However, it looks like Aloy won't be alone in the fight. Another mysterious figure (voiced by The Wire's Lance Reddick) has a stake in the battle too -- but whose side is he actually on?

There are plenty of questions raised by this new video, but it certainly eases concerns that Horizon Zero Dawn would be something of a rudderless technical showpiece. There's a core storyline, a ruthless villain, and a mystery to unpack. The fact that it offers up even more wonderful visuals is a bonus.

Intentionally or unintentionally, that is a fantastic smack on some of the so called PC "gamers" lol.

My 20 mins with the game felt like 20 seconds. Combat, Camera, Movement - everything was so polished and smooth even in November. Everything just worked and the gameplay was utterly satisfying.

All in all, the game is looking promising, with a bit of something for everyone. Horizon is clearly Guerrilla’s most ambitious game.

The wait is freaking killing me to the point where I don't want to read up anything horizon related until 28th. Saving up to get a 4k TV just for this game. I hope I do get it by the time this game is released.

So this is an "RPG" as much as Asscreed/Shadow of Mordor/Tomb Raider/Batman Arkham Knight/Far Cry are. Its primarily an action adventure game. The dialogue choices won't have drastically different outcomes or shape the outcome of the story altogether. Labeling each response with a "strong arm", "heart" and "brain" icon is just a dumb hand holding idea.

Close Quarters Combat is copy/paste from TW3, movement animations lacking fluidity (referring to the Gamespot hands-on footage I saw on Youtube which was uploaded today) and the characters' faces look lifeless, including Aloy's, when engaging in dialogues. So far, feels very much like a GG game. And from what I've seen so far, I have no high hopes from the story either. It looks good, that's it.

To begin with, Horizon is gorgeous. The game will be rendered in 2160p checkerboard (meaning, basically 4K) on the PlayStation 4 Pro, but its graphics shine even in 1080p on the standard PS4. For starters, for players who still possess standard 1080p HDTVs, we’re able to offer far better image quality. We’ve got a number of techniques at our disposal. The most logical one is supersampling. This is a very high-quality anti-aliasing technique, which basically means we internally render at a higher resolution (close to 4K) before shrinking it down to the final 1080p resolution. As our internal calculations are done at a resolution much higher than 1080p, more detail survives before we shrink it down to 1080p, resulting in smoother edges — virtually no jaggies — and a more stable image.

We’re also looking at enhancing the quality of our shadow maps and increasing the quality of our anisotropic filtering. This is a technique which increases the quality of texture sampling, resulting in more detailed environment textures. We still have to tweak these elements of the 1080p output quality for the final game, but we have quite a bit of power yet to play with.

In addition, Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4 Pro will fully support users with 4K TVs, outputting at a much higher resolution. We’re rendering 2160p checkerboard, which is a special technique that looks incredible on a 4K TV. You’re going to notice a ton of subtle details, from stitching on Aloy’s outfit, individual leaves and branches swaying in the wind, kilometers away in the distance, and more detail in all the machines and NPCs in the world.

Then there’s HDR, or high dynamic range, which is a brand-new feature that enhances the range of colors we can display. It’s very exciting and hard to explain as it’s something which most people haven’t seen before, so they don’t know what to expect. You can’t print it, it’s not in cinemas, your phone’s screen can’t do it. The only thing that you can compare HDR with is reality. We normally have to do a lot of work in the engine to take an internal high dynamic range image and then make it suitable to be displayed on a normal TV. A lot of color fidelity gets lost in the process. If you own an HDR-enabled TV, we don’t have to lose that data and you’re looking at the image in its full glory, with brighter and deeper colors, more contrast and vibrancy, in its pristine state. The benefits are truly awesome.

I don't think anyone ever labeled Horizon as an RPG, it's an open world game with RPG elements, but these days just about every game has some RPG elements to it, even RE7 has stat upgrades. Awfully interested in posting in game topics for games we're not interested in, are we ?

From my time with the game, it's the thrill of an encounter and how radically your strategy has to vary for each robo dino.

The gameplay itself is its unique asset, can't really compare with any other game. I didn't experience any cutscene, dialogue choices etc to comment on those aspects but GG is really good at making trailers that are cinematic and better than the story within the game.
