[h=1]Nintendo Switch getting three more games at launch[/h]

[h=2]Some returning eShop favorites[/h]

The Nintendo Switch launch lineup has a trio of new additions: World of Goo, Little Inferno and Human Resource Machine. Developer Tomorrow Corporation announced those three games will be available for Switch on March 3, the same day Nintendo’s next console arrives.
While those games have been released on previous generations of Nintendo hardware, the Switch versions will have something exclusive.
“[A]ll three games will come bundled with their full original soundtracks,” the developer said on its website. “Tomorrow Corporation’s intrepid interns have created a new Soundtrack Mode, where players can explore Kyle Gabler’s wonderfully bizarre music in this special mode, available only on Nintendo Switch.”
All three games will be digital releases, so make sure you have plenty of add-on storage.

2D Boy’s World of Goo was first released in 2008 on Wii. Tomorrow Corporation’s Little Inferno and Human Resource Machine were released for Wii U in 2012 and 2015, respectively.
Tomorrow Corporation’s games join The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, 1-2-Switch, Skylanders Imaginators, Super Bomberman R and Just Dance 2017 in the confirmed list of titles coming to Nintendo Switch on day one.

[h=1]Nintendo Switch game cases are in the wild, and they look a lot like PSP ones[/h]

[h=2]They’re so sleek![/h]

Photos of several Nintendo Switch game cases have made it onto Twitter, giving us our first real look at the games we can expect to start collecting this March. Although we already know what some Switch games’ cases look like, seeing them in someone’s hands is a whole different experience — especially when it’s next to a PlayStation Portable case for a size comparison.
Twitter user Gaijinhunter visited a Japanese game store this week, where tons of Nintendo Switch game cases were already on the shelves. The photos show games like I Am Setsuna, Super Bomberman R and Dragon Quest Heroes 1 & 2 from the inside and out, but what’s most striking is a photo of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild right next to a PSP game.

The Switch’s case is downright svelte compared to the PSP’s plastic box. Other than that, however, they’re remarkably similar. They’re both thin cases with clear plastic shells; just think of the Switch case as the PSP’s cuter, tinier cousin. (Also, Breath of the Wild’s cover art looks museum-worthy compared to that of the PSP game it’s next to.)
It’s a useful visual aid for those already clearing some space on their game shelves for their Switch collections. The rest of the images Gaijinhunter posted just show the interiors and exteriors of several Switch launch titles, but even those are fun to peruse. Check them all out below.

I'd give Nintendo credit for trying to make gaming simple and fun.

Just the other day I grabbed up an office colleague's 3DS XL and blew an hour on some Mario game. It was too simple, too classic, nostalgic inducing ride. 3DS is the most common handheld I've seen in Australia, kids playing it everywhere. Sports days on the sidelines, being accompanied to a party but adults where they're bored, long drives and road trips, overnight camping trips, commute on the train, etc. etc.

I've met with many parents who look around for cheap gaming tablets because kids won't let go of their ipads. Multiple kids taking turns to use the same tablet as they're relatively more expensive.

I see the Switch as a great solution to great many of these problems. Us as veteran gamers, who've been gaming their whole lives and who've personally grown up with the evolution of gaming, Nintendo's solutions appear gimmicky and stupid and stuck in time (specially their lineup). But the new generations who've missed out on Mario and Sonic grinds of the past, that feeling of playing Tomb Raider and killing your first bat; I feel like they can never experience the evolution first hand like we did.

I think Nintendo fills that gap well, or at least tries to. As a parent, I see myself getting a Switch for my kids to ease them into mainstream gaming. It's not really for casual gamers, it's for a new generation of gamers who will succeed us. The older Centennials will find it hard to grasp but it's out role as Gen Ys and early Millennials to understand Nintendo's approach.

I don't see it as replacing my Playstation in the lounge. I see it as filling up a lot of gaps in my gaming needs, as a gamer on the go, as a gamer father of young gamers to be, etc.

[h=1]Nintendo: 100 games now in development for Switch[/h]

[h=2]From 70 publishers[/h]

The long-term survival of a gaming console is contingent upon a steady stream of games without long gaps, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima told investors this week, adding that there are now more than 100 titles in development for Nintendo’s upcoming Switch console.
Those games, in development from more than 70 publishers, illustrate an increased interest in the new console from publishers, he said.
“After the presentation on January 13, we have continued to receive requests from more and more software publishers who want to develop games for the system,” Kimishima said during a briefing earlier this week. “At the presentation, we announced that there were over 80 titles in development from more than 50 software publishers, but that number has now climbed to over 100 titles from more than 70 publishers.”
He added that the still unannounced new titles will be detailed in the future.

Kimishima also made a point to explain why Nintendo is spacing out the release of Nintendo’s big, in-house developed games instead of releasing them all when the system comes out in March.

“Our thinking in arranging the 2017 software lineup is that it is important to continue to provide new titles regularly without long gaps,” he said. “This encourages consumers to continue actively playing the system, maintains buzz, and spurs continued sales momentum for Nintendo Switch.”
That’s why The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a launch-day title, but Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Armsare listed as coming sometime during the first half of the year and Splatoon 2 will hit in the summer.

“We believe that these titles exemplify the concept of the Nintendo Switch, which is to be able to play anywhere with anyone and at any time, and will expand and invigorate competition between players,” he said. “In this way, we are working to create titles and environments to invigorate the competitive gaming scene so that a wider demographic of customers can enjoy, talk about, and continue playing the Nintendo Switch.”
Nintendo EPD/Nintendo He also reiterated that Nintendo still plans to ship two million units of the new console worldwide by the end of March.
“We have heard that many retailers have already closed pre-orders and have allocated remaining inventory for sale on launch day,” he said. “This pre-order momentum is reassuring proof that the core gamer demographic understands the uniqueness of the Nintendo Switch and continues to support us.
“We are preparing our supply system to ensure that we will be able to make continued shipments after launch as well.”

[h=1]Nintendo Switch online service will be much cheaper than on PS4 or Xbox One[/h]

[h=2]Perhaps as high as $30[/h]

The Nintendo Switch will require a paid subscription for online gaming, and we now have an idea of how much it will cost: 2,000-3,000 yen per year, which is between $17.63 and $26.44.
Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima gave the price range in an interview with Nikkei today, telling the Japanese newspaper that “with paid [services], we will be able to fully commit to customers.” The Switch will be the first Nintendo system on which the company will charge for online play; neither the Wii nor the Wii U required a subscription for networked multiplayer features.
That range is much cheaper than the cost of Microsoft’s or Sony’s online services. Even if Nintendo were to charge $29.99 a year in the U.S., it would be half the price of an annual subscription to Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus, both of which cost $59.99. An Xbox Live membership is required for online gaming on both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, while a PlayStation Plus subscription is necessary only on the PlayStation 4, not the PlayStation 3.

[h=4]Everything we know about Nintendo Switch[/h]

The cost difference seems to make sense considering what we know of the feature set of the Switch’s online service. It will offer one free NES or Super NES game per month to subscribers, but unlike the monthly free games that come with a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold membership, each Nintendo game will be free only for the month in question. Once the next month rolls around, it will feature a new game, and the previous title will no longer be free. Nintendo is adding online play to these 8- and 16-bit games.

It’s also worth noting that with the Switch, Nintendo is relegating many features that are typical of an online gaming service — voice chat, online lobbies and other social elements — to a dedicated mobile app. Those features will not be accessible directly on the console, and the company’s existing social network, Miiverse on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, also will not be available on the Switch.
We’ve reached out to Nintendo for more details on the Switch’s online service, and will update this article with any information we receive. Nintendo will launch the Switch worldwide on March 3, and the online service will be free until it fully goes live this fall.

[h=1]Nintendo ‘studying’ Switch VR support[/h]

[h=2]Comfort is the concern[/h]

The Nintendo Switch will support virtual reality “in one form or another” someday — if the company can figure out how to make the technology comfortable, said Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima in an interview with Nikkei.
Kimishima said Nintendo is “studying” the possibility of adding VR to the Switch, the company’s upcoming portable/docked hybrid console. “If we are able to resolve the issues with playing [VR] comfortably for long hours, we will support it in one form or another,” Kimishima told Nikkei.

[h=4]Nintendo's Fils-Aime: Current state of VR isn't fun[/h]

Nintendo appears to slowly be coming around on VR. Reggie Fils-Aime, the president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America, dismissed the technology in an interview with Polygon at E3 2015. “We’ve been experimenting with [VR] for a long, long time,” said Fils-Aime, perhaps referencing the fact that Nintendo got into the VR field in the ’90s with the ill-fated Virtual Boy.
Fils-Aime added that Nintendo believed VR needed to be fun and social in order to succeed. “Based on what I’ve seen to date, it’s not fun, and it’s not social,” he continued. “It’s just tech.”

Of course, that was nine months before the current wave of high-fidelity VR headsets arrived — Oculus VR launched the Rift in late March 2016, and HTC and Valve released the Vive in April. Sony became the first console manufacturer to support VR in October, with the PlayStation 4’s PlayStation VR headset.
By February 2016, Nintendo’s frosty position on VR appeared to be thawing a bit. During an earnings call, Kimishima characterized VR as “interesting technology” and said that Nintendo was doing further research into it. However, he noted, Nintendo had no specific plans to launch a VR product.
A possible VR accessory for the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo/U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
Nintendo finally revealed the Switch in October. Two months later, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published a number of Nintendo patents showing off potential use cases for the Switch — including a virtual reality peripheral.

VR on the Switch would work similarly to the way it does with smartphone-based VR headsets such as the Samsung Gear VR and Google Daydream View, according to the patents in question. A diagram in the patents showed the Switch unit sliding into the top of an accessory to form a head-mounted display. A user would view the Switch screen through lenses meant to expand the viewing angle to increase immersion, and the console could warp the image accordingly.
The Switch features acceleration and gyro sensors, which the system could use in this configuration to calculate the position and movement of a user’s head — a key aspect of bringing a player into a virtual world. And since the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers can be used wirelessly, a player would be able to slot the display into this accessory, strap it to their head and then interact with a game using the controllers.
Considering the Switch’s hardware, something like the aforementioned peripheral would likely be the only feasible VR solution for the system. The Switch features a custom system-on-a-chip based on Nvidia’s Tegra series of mobile processors, so the console would almost surely be incapable of powering a stand-alone headset like the PlayStation VR.
Nintendo will release the Switch worldwide on March 3 for $299.

Or the Wii hits.
I think it will sell well initially due to the popularity of Nintendo (and their exclusives) but somewhat die down after a couple of year after release, unlike Wii which continued to grow for a long time. I say that because mobiles/tablets are already in the portable game and a large number of people already have a console/pc.

What would have been great if this was somehow backwards compatible especially with the WII U since alot of folks have skipped that generation of Nintendo exclusives. Those 10 odd Nintendo exclusives on the WII U could have given the Switch a much needed boost at the time of launch.

[h=1]Nintendo is using Unreal Engine 4, and Miyamoto says they have it ‘mastered’[/h]

[h=2]The more capable Switch will allow for easier PC ports as well[/h]

In a recent call with investors, creative director Shigeru Miyamoto said that Nintendo’s own development teams have rapidly gained ground on their Western competitors. That’s because the new Nintendo Switch console is more open than ever, and supports modern game engines like Unreal and Unity.
During the call, an anonymous investor faulted the Wii U for its inability to easily support third-party software. He demanded to know how Nintendo’s own internal teams were getting on with making games for the Switch, which is due out March 3. In response, Miyamoto was extremely positive about the new device’s capabilities.

[h=4]Nintendo Switch launch lineup includes Zelda, 1-2-Switch (update)[/h]
“Regarding our software development environment,” Miyamoto said, “third-party developers who are making software for PC can now easily adapt that software to work on our platform. In the current development environment, Iʼd say that it would take less than a year for them to port a PC game to Nintendo Switch.
“That ease of software development has also been felt by Nintendoʼs internal developers. Also, even though game software developers in the U.S. and E.U. are often said to have superior skills to their Japanese counterparts when it comes to software development techniques, Nintendoʼs software developers have mastered state-of-the-art technologies such as Unreal engine, and their skills can now be compared with those of Western developers. Our developers are more excited than ever to create software.”

[h=4]Nintendo Switch will launch with fewer games than the Wii, Wii U or 3DS[/h]
It’s no secret that Nintendo has planned to support Unreal Engine 4 on the new console. The toolkit was first released in 2012, and has been at the core of many popular titles on competing consoles. It was possible to move UE4-based games onto the Wii U, but it was not officially supported by Epic Games and required some workarounds. The Switch will also be compatible with the popular Unity engine.
“I have to refrain from disclosing any technological details, but ... we have been very flexible when making technological selections,” said managing executive officer Shinya Takahashi in support of Miyamoto’s assertion. He emphasized the close working relationship between Nintendo and Nvidia, which is building custom hardware for the Switch, for the increased performance of the new console compared to the Wii U.
“This time, in order to develop Nintendo Switch with high performance in spite of its low power consumption, I feel it was key that the two companies could work together as partners while also fully displaying our individual craftsmanship.”
