intel: We do not prevent nvidia from developing x86 microprocessor. intel will discuss potential violation of patents only after nvidia releases x86 cpu
[03/25/2009 10:19 pm]
by anton shilov intel corp. Does not prohibit nvidia corp. To develop x86-compatible microprocessors, but as soon as the latter launches its product, the chip giant will definitely discuss whether such a chip infringes its patents and whether nvidia has rights to sell it.
“we’re not going to react to anything until there’s a real product. [nvidia has] a cross-license from us. It has certain exclusions in it. It has a certain period in terms of when it runs, when it’s valid. When and if they have a real product, we’ll have a discussion of whether it violates it or not. That’s a tbd situation,” said paul otellini, chief executive officer of intel corp., during a meeting with employees.(conituned ...)

New Dell monitor has 21.5'' panel size, 1080p resolution

New Dell monitor has 21.5'' panel size, 1080p resolution
by Cyril Kowaliski — 6:00 AM on April 3, 2009
The slow transition to desktop monitors with 16:9 aspect ratios seems to produce some odd specimens. Dell's latest entry is the SX2210, a new "full HD" display that couples an unusual 21.5" panel size with a 1920x1080 resolution.
The SX2210 is up for sale right now on Dell's website for $279. Apart from the weird resolution and panel size combo, this monitor has a 2ms response time, 50,000:1 "dynamic" contrast, 300cd/m² luminosity, 160°/170° viewing angles, and both DVI and HDMI connectivity. There's a built-in two-megapixel camera and dual microphones, as well.
Refreshingly, Dell specifies the panel type—twisted nematic, or TN—in the specs page. That's not exactly a surprise considering the price tag, though. Dell's higher-quality, S-PVA UltraSharp 2408WFP costs over 500 bucks, although it does have a bigger 24" panel with slightly more pixels.

Dell XPS 625 and XPS 630 now have liquid cooling
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, April 10, 2009 - 8:17 PM

Now this is 'cool'. Heh .. awful pun. The Dell XPS 625 and XPS 630 have just gotten a liquid cooling option added to their specs in place of the standard fan-cooling option.

The Asetek liquid cooling system provides for a more even cooling of the processor and makes overclocking a much more versatile possibility for users that really want to get the most out of their systems.
This cooling option also reduces the noise, as there’s no loud fan noise to contend with. Since both of these computers include the Intel Core 2 Extreme and are unlocked, making speed boosts much easier, having a stronger cooling option just makes sense.
To add the Asetek liquid cooling option, it will cost you nearly $120 extra on top of the $899 and $1,099 priced XPS 625 and XPS 630 gaming towers. The new option will be available by the end of the month.

Bluetooth 3.0 Launches on April 21st

The anticipated Bluetooth 3.0 is gearing up to be launched this month. Set to be released on the 21st of April, the third Bluetooth specification will offer improved speeds, though they're not yet finally specified. Bluetooth 3.0 will be backward compatible with older Bluetooth standards. Most importantly Bluetooth 3.0 will use 802.11 protocol to transfer data. This will allow devices to pair through an 802.11 protocol and if there is no Wi-Fi detected, older Bluetooth standard will be used. The new Bluetooth specification will also add Enhanced Power Control - a feature that is said to reduce the number of disconnects between the paired devices and this way save the battery life. Later this month, when Bluetooth 3.0 is finally announced, the Bluetooth SIG will probably start making a list of manufacturers that will incorporate the new technology.

Fusion-io Plays 768 DVD Video Streams Simultaneously from One SSD

High-performance storage solutions vendor Fusion-io may have gone way ahead of setting a record, when during the Storage Networking World event, the company demonstrated its 640 GB PCI-Express ioSAN card to support as many as 768 simultaneous DVD-quality video streams. To do so, the engineers set up a storage network consisting of a host workstation for the ioSAN card, 12 disk-less servers with quad-socket, quad-core processors, using an InfiniBand backbone, two 10 gigabit Ethernet switches, and NVIDIA graphics cards to provide the video acceleration. The resulting display consisted of about a dozen 50-inch HD LCD TVs running to form a compound display panel, onto which the 768 video streams were played on.

Joshua Aune, Fusion-io systems architect, says that the ioSAN card could have stored 2,500 DVD-quality movies, and will further be able to support 1,024 video streams, which the company plans to demo in two weeks time at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show, in Las Vegas USA. The ioSAN 320GB PCIe card boasts a 1.5GB/sec. read speed and 1.4GB/sec. write speed with 32k packets or 186,000 IOPS for reads and 167,000 IOPS for writes using 4k packets. The card used in this feat had 640GB of single-layer cell (SLC) NAND flash memory in two 320 GB modules. A video of the feat can be watched here.

Intel Larrabee’s x86 Compatibility Is Drawback – Chief Scientist of Nvidia . Nvidia Slams Intel Larrabee Again

by Anton Shilov Despite the fact that Intel Corp.’s code-named Larrabee discrete graphics processing unit (GPU) largely remains a mystery, Nvidia Corp. constantly criticizes Intel’s technology and predicts the lack of its business success. According to Nvidia, x86 instruction set compatibility will hardly help Larrabee to provide benefits and will also not allow Intel to create a truly high-performance graphics chip.
“Intel’s chip is lugging along this x86 instruction set, and there is a tax you have to pay for that. I think their argument is mostly a marketing thing,” said William Dally, chief scientist at Nvidia, in an interview with the New York Times news-paper.
Intel claims that compatibility with x86 instructions will help Larrabee to better suit for the so-called general purpose processing on graphics processing units (GPGPU), including calculations of physics effects, artificial intelligence and so on. However, since x86 processing cores are larger in terms of physical dimension compared to proprietary cores inside ATI Radeon or Nvidia GeForce GPUs, the number of such cores will be lower, hence, total horsepower of Larrabee may be lower compared to traditional GPUs that will compete with them.
It is interesting to note that ATI, graphics products group of Advanced Micro Devices (which primary business is creation of microprocessors) also does not see many benefits of x86 for graphics. According to the company, at this time it makes sense to continue using proprietary cores incompatible with x86 commands.
Intel did not react on the comments issued by Nvidia.
