Ok so I'm doing a project for uni which involves recommending ICT purchases for their whole business. Its a medium sized enterprise with about 30 employees.

I'm stuck with servers and server softwares, and have a few question, hope someone can help me out?

1) Lets say I buy a specific server combination, can I run Windows Server 2012 on it?
2) Do I need to buy separate licenses for each individual pc running the server other than the server itself?
3) How does the server connect to everything else (office PCs, laptops, printers etc).

If someone can provide some help or link me to some guides, that would be really helpful because the microsoft website is really confusing. Thanks. :(

1-Yes, it does not matter. You can even run Windows server on a normal desktop PC. But dedicated server system is highly recommended.
2-What do you mean when you say? "each individual pc running the server other than the server itself?". Size of organization is small, you don't need multiple servers. One server is enough and you don't need to buy licence for all other pc's.
3-You need to create a LAN network between all devices.

1) By buying server, did you mean Buying Hardware for SERVER and running Windows Server 2012 on it? If yes... You can definitely run Windows Server 2012 on it.. Even If you can Run Server 2012 on a Core2Dou Workstation, Don't need to biuy high End Hardware

2) Depend upon License terms.. For example Windows server 2003 came with 25 client License. Which means You can run a SERVER and connect upto 25 client PCs to it, Individual PCs won't be running on SERVER OS Server will be using Winddows 2012 SERVER, and Clients will use Windows 7. You just need to buy 1 Server License

3) Through Networking, You have to make network of Organization, Connect all of them through Switches/Routers. And Assign IP Addresses to each machine. You can also assign IP to Network Printers.

I'll check out the license terms, thanks for the info.

There is no mention of such licenses as far as I checked except CALs (Client Access Licenses) which allow client PCs to communicate with the server. However I dont think these include the license for running Windows 7 aswell?

Have a look at this http://download.microsoft.com/downl...indows_Server_2012_R2_Licensing_Datasheet.pdf

Essentials edition for small businesses with up to 25 users running on servers with up to two processors. While the Standard & Datacenter Edition doesn't have any user limits but Hardware Limits. "CAL" I am not sure what is it, but I think they are referring to Windows 7 Client License, And no These doesn't include license for running Windows 7, You have to buy Windows 7 separately for each Client PC.

ok thanks.

As for windows for client PCs, why do businesses use Windows 7 enterprise? Does it offer volume licensing i.e 1 license covers cost for all PCs that windows will run on?

Lastly, I am planning on suggesting a two core server with Windows Server 2012 to manage data backup for all cliemt PCs and host a website and intranet. Is it possible to have multiple servers (for website, intranet and our own email server) run on one physical server running Windows server 2012?

And what can I do to make sure the server is fail safe? I was thinking suggesting two physical servers each running the same processes

Windows 7 editions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Check if you need additional features like BitLocker, DirecAccess, VHD Boot etc which Enterprise version offers, If you don't know about them, you probably don't need them. Anything above Professional is un needed for a regular medium business in my opinion. I don't know much about volume licensing, so can't say any words on it. Have a look at this -> Microsoft Volume Licensing - Windows 7

Yes Its possible to have multiple server (Web/Intranet/Email Server) using Visualization. But I think MS Licensing Terms limits it. I don't think you need multiple server for a small network of 30+ clients, One Server will do the job.possible to have multiple servers (for website, intranet and our own email server) run on one physical server running Windows server 2012? - See more at: http://www.pakgamers.com/forums/f25/need-help-server-os-183348/#post2266866

Ahh okay, checked it, Windows Enterprise is only for companies with more than 250 PCs so dont need that. I just didnt get the answer to the question regarding can you run multiple servers (email, website etc) on a single physical server running Windows Server WITHOUT virtualization?

As in does each server (email, web etc) need a dedicated instance of Windows Server 2012 running, so I do I need to use virtualization?

Yes You can, But You need a separate license for every SERVER you run. I hope it answered both of your question, Why you want to run multiple servers? Everything can be done on a single server & Windows Server License Term doesn't allow Virtualization.

I would suggest Linux over Windows Server for "Email & WEB SERVER" Its fast, Its secure & Its Free, However you need to learn it if you haven't done it before But End result is good.
