Quick trailer confirms Insomniac’s big 2018 hit is getting a full sequel

Face front, true believers! Marvel’s Spider-Man is indeed getting a sequel. Insomniac Games teased the new game on Thursday at Sony’s PlayStation Showcase 2021 and teased an important new villain: Venom.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is coming to PlayStation 5 in 2023, and both Peter Parker and Miles Morales will be in it as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Men.

Ryan Schneider, head of franchise strategy and studio relations at Insomniac Games, said on the PlayStation Blog that Marvel’s Spider-Man creative director Bryan Intihar and game director Ryan Smith will return for the sequel. Schneider also revealed that Tony Todd (of Candyman fame) will be voice Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Yuri Lowenthal and Nadji Jeter will reprise their roles as Peter and Miles, respectively.

Marvel’s Spider-Man launched in 2018 for PlayStation 4 and was a tremendous hit for both Sony and Insomniac Games. Sony acquired the studio in 2019, following a nearly 20-year history of Insomniac developing big franchises for PlayStation consoles.

The first game starred Peter Parker/Spider-Man and practically every major villain he’s taken on in the character’s 50-year history. The story builds to a confrontation with Mister Negative, a relatively new baddie (first appearance in 2008) but ended on a cliffhanger that left plenty of narrative room for a sequel.

It was followed by a spinoff, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a stand-alone title for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 that launched in November 2020. That continued the plot line introduced in the main game, where teenager Miles Morales is bitten by a spider genetically engineered by Norman Osborn, gaining spider-powers in an origin story similar to the one introducing the character in 2011.

Would be super cool if there are parts where you can toggle between both Spideys in combat, kinda like the way it's done in FFVIIR. Would make way for tag team moves and stuff. Only way Peter and Miles can put up a fight against someone as powerful as Venom lol.

Hmmmm.. I'm more into the conventional block here i guess. I just want to go along with a single character from the beginning and hope it has a somewhat different story from the other one and maybe a few missions where they could tag team. It would be really interesting to see INSOMNIAC's approach to both these characters.

Yeah, this would be a better approach. Individual campaigns that overlap at certain junctures and both Spideys can team up to take on a major enemy etc.

Regarding the inferior LOD, faster flow of data alone isn't enough to allow faster traversal. It still needs to be within the rendering budget, and therefore cutbacks appear to have been made accordingly. Totally fine with it

And someone said "next gen assets" shouldn't be an issue. Reality of console hardware is the LOD is worse than last gen LMAOOOOO....poor assets and still there is pop in. CerebralTiger's estimation of this hardware's capabilities continues to fail him

Assets are indeed current-gen. Don't recall saying there wouldn't be LOD management associated with them

Pop-in is also a GPU limitation. Faster IO and decompression is allowing Spidey to troooly swing tho

Atleast Insomniac's characters are a multi-generation ahead in terms of controls compared to GTA V. That's what matters more, not doing what GTA V does but faster

But the inevitable 60 FPS mode will no doubt strip the RT.

Unless they have enough grunt out of the PS5 to do a lite-RT mode with 60 FPS again.

If Insomniac can improve the plot/pacing of the main story and add more meaningful side activities like the ones seen in Arkham Asylum/Arkham City, why wouldn't it get a 90+ metascore?
