Life at GIK + Life at NUST : Your Perspective?

Hi everyone!

As most of you might be aware that this year's GIK result was announced on the 12th of July. Alhamdulillah, I've been offered the materials engineering (nanotechnology) department.
After a bit of research, it does seem like this field involves a lot of innovation, and sounds really interesting! At least to me, lol. So there are high chances that I'd opt for it.
The NUST result still isn't here for me sadly ;-; (Paper based Karachi swag).
But hopefully it should be alright as well.

Then I'd have to finally choose between two of the most prestigious universities. I like both honestly, but of course, as a freshman, I am super-curious about uni-life right now and decided to ask the variety of people on Pakgamers who have enrolled in either of these. I know there is a "Life at NUST H-12" thread already, so I have read what most of you think about NUST's lifestyle, however, I couldn't find any Life at GIK thread, and thus I'm here right now.

For my uni-life, the main expectations that I have, are that I want to be able to pursue the things I am passionate for. My hobbies and what not. I want to study along side different activities, getting to know people, make some nice friends, have time for gaming(LOLofcourse), train sports, join the gym, and I want to be able to structure my life (hopefully >.>) to incorporate all of that stuff. I guess what I'm trying to ask is, can I create a lifestyle like that for myself in the environment GIK provides? Or will my work-load be so high that I won't have time for myself? Will I be studying all the time? I know engineering is hard, but to me, that's not the only thing life is about.

~*5 more paragraphs of meaningless text later*~

So I'd like to know what life at GIK is like! And how the experience was/is for you? :D Feel free to discuss NUST as well!

PS: DOES GIK HAVE A SWIMMING POOL? OMG I KNOW IT DOES BUT, CAN ALL THE STUDENTS GO THERE WHEN EVER THEY WANT? WOULDN'T THAT BE AMAZING? :O

I am not a GIKIAN but have spent two weekends there as participant of two national events. Also visited NUST H12 for MS interview session.
Both institutions have totally different environment when we put them in comparison.
However my vote would be for GIKI.

I met these guys at LUMS Music Fest this winter. They were from GIKI. so their opinion might (probably) be a bit biased. I asked the guys the same question and one of them said he went to NUST but he had to leave because it was very difficult for him to adjust in the uni life there. I don't remember exactly what he said, but he emphasized mostly on how me being a student of one of the most well known private schools in the country am probably accustomed to that life, with the thirst for extra curricula, getting the best treatment in so many ways, food, facilities and that sorta thing, and NUST might just not be able to provide that because it didn't for him either.
However it comes down to the same thing, we both know pretty much enough about the life at NUST. Some more information on GIKI might help us both make a decision.

I m doing my MS Mechanical Engineering from Giki... And giki life is far better than nust (according to me) .... If u have no reservations on materials engineering then simply just go for it... And yeah swimming pool, gym, lawn tennis all facilities all available for all the students.... Yeah study and routine is quite tough but you'll have national and international level events on each and every weekend... So there are fair enough opportunities for both study and enjoyment... Best of luck

Well, it does kinda seem biased. My friend came FROM GIKI to NUST. NUST has a lot of extra curricula as well.

I see, could you elaborate the kind of differences you noticed? Was it the way you were welcomed? The way the events were organized? The way the faculty body was controlling the crowd? The way the student body was enjoying itself? Any comparisons would be great. :)

Nice to hear from a GIKian! It's reassuring to know that the enjoyment factor is good along with the studies. Oh and I have another question for you! It's kind of irrelevant, but I stumbled upon this page on facebook titled: "I have the hottest chicks in my uni, LOLJK I'm from GIK", and it just made me kind of curious haha. Would you agree with this? Or is this just a joke? It doesn't hold as much importance as the other factors to me, but I'm just curious lol.

I have some friends at NUST as well, who went to the same college/school as me, and they are completely happy with what NUST is offering because it's obviously wayyy better than what our school/college provided haha.

I guess its that stereotype. There are no chicks in engineering.

Damn i got merit number 1307,got wait listed ! My preference is CS,hope some good boys clear the way for me :D

Anyways i would join nust any time over giki mainly because nust is cheap and social life is kinda good but H12 Campus is damn huge! i mean very huge, dont know how students travel from one lab to another.
And also man if you are thinking about girls in giki, you would be disappointed, heck even couple of girls showed up for entry test :p

Ah yeah, a lot of people consider the fees of both institutions as well, but I don't want to base my decision on that :D
I hope you get in for CS man! There should be decent chances because many of GIK's top merits opt for NUST or PIEAS (or so I've heard) so InshaAllah!
Regarding the females :p
The NUST crowd does seem like it's more consistent, and I did see the girls at the entry test as well, but LOL. I don't really mind, as long as there's a decent amount to converse and socialize with, (which I'm assuming there are? Because of the prospectus GIK sent us), these 4 years should be good.
Of course asking for too many girls would be unreasonable since we are, after all, selecting ENGINEERING ;)

Brother once u have selected engineering as a profession then u should keep this thing in mind that girls are very much limited in engineering field... And those ikka dukka girls who opt engineering... They are either of just normal looks or they are of studious type... But
As far as giki is concerned... Girls are less in number but they are fine... Couples are also made in giki as other universities... So in short... Brother if ur parents have enough resources to afford the giki budget then simply go for it... It has a separate enjoyable life.... And also giki gives the matching facilities according to their fee structure... So if u spend more than 2 million... They give u a fair amount of facilities also... And finally u should just worried about studies not the girls... Bcz there are number of students who have been stuck off from the giko due to poor grades... So studying in giki and competing with other talented students is a bit tough job... Anyways talk to people...take advises and then make a decision... Stay blessed

You got 1307 at NUST? Why would that get you waitlisted? 1300 gets you into CS and SE directly with no tension.

I appreciate your reply bro, and you are absolutely right. Thank you for the advice (Y)

Nice, bro. Merit no. 715. Best of luck for the future. :)

Bro, he's talking about the GIK merit list. :)

Okay, I was lurking around the List of PG students in different universities, and realized there are only two GIKians in here, or maybe the others haven't submitted their names.
Calling password for your insight as well mate!

Well I would only talk with a bit generalization but a rational point: The social life would always be NOT-SO-GOOD in a Rural-setting University

Yeah u can switch to mechanical only if u topped the first semester... Bcz in giki mechanical is on the top... So if u r selected in ME then u can switch to other faculties after first semester easily but if u wanna switch from some other faculty to FME (faculty of mechanical engineering) then u should be a topper of first semester... And i m not biased due the fact that i have done ME but trust me mechanical is a very broad and interesting field then any other... Also FME of giki is the only iso 9001 certified engineering department of Pakistan... Anyways wish u best of luck...

Oh.
One reason I can think of, would be that there wouldn't be many places nearby to visit, such as movies/clubs/gaming zones/food places and shopping malls to enjoy with your friends? Perhaps that's what you're thinking?

Otherwise, I see no drawbacks with rural life and think that it might actually be nice and peaceful.
