Dear All,

I'm Planning to Launch a coffee brand in Pakistan off course things are on paper at this stage. Just a bit of a background about my self i been working in coffee industry since last 10 years i have worked in British & UAE coffee industry and got deep understanding of coffee and coffee business. i work as a Ground Marketing manager for a restaurant management firm .I have won the Super Brand award for the most recently coffee brand i have worked for in UAE for 2016 it's one of the most prestigious award based on your marketing work for the brand having said that my credentials are great in coffee industry which iam extremely humble and proud as well.

The plan is to launch Pakistan's first Speciality coffee brand which is not just another coffee brand you probably see in the market. Speciality coffee brands serving High end coffee beans which you dont get in Starbucks , Costa or any name any coffee chain you know. Speciality coffee brands are not just serving coffee they educated people about what they buy its a whole experience not just serving coffee. Why are buying this coffee? what is special about this coffee where is the beans came from? etc.

Next step is i would like to launch Pakistan's first coffee school. We will be giving training about coffee business entrepreneurship how to run a coffee brand , we will be proving consultancy work for people to set up their coffee business , Coffee making courses its like being a 5 star chef in coffee industry ( My self went to London school of coffee for different courses )

I got a plan including suppliers , hiring , coffee suppliers , equipment , location , interior . Next stage i'm looking for like minded people to discuss this project or for investment opportunities. Coffee is the second most used commodity after OIL its a great business to invest in and i believe its is also becoming a part of our daily life style. Most importantly its a first of its kind in Pakistan and it surely got great financial potential. I believe with right strategy we can build a great brand.

My only motivation to launch this brand is to build our own home grown brand to counter international coffee brands. Pakistan do not have any International F & B brand to show case in international market as if now and i'm absolutely my project would be the first and successful one.

I'm calling all like minded people or their friends or any one to discuss or if they are interested in investment we can talk about it i'm very much open for ideas or if people are interested in investments.

High regards

Dear Nouman

You have an excellent idea and i believe you can surely pull it off. I dont know how much investment are you looking at. But i might be interested

As you said, you are working on launching a new coffee brand in Pakistan. So that means you will be entering in direct competition against Nescafe and other coffee brands?
currently you will import these special coffee beans only or packaged coffee? like the Nescafe, etc
I dont know about the consumer market regarding coffee in Pakistan . However, as you stated that its the second most consumed commodity after OIL. Is it valid for UAE, Pakistan or GLOBAL?

Coming to the last part that you mentioned on home grown coffee brand? This will be the real difficult phase as it would involve farming and farming in Pakistan have its own complexities.

I am a great fan of entrepreneurs and i always support them in every way.
Just for your information: Have you read the cafe coffee day case study written on Indian market?? its a great piece of information and have excellent market insights. (PM me your email if you require the case study)
I have heard a similar cafe coffee day was launched in Pakistan, but it did not survive (i dont know the validity of it, I just heard it)

From whatever you have written above. I believe you are planning the following with focus only on B2B rather than B2C
Phase 1: Import coffee and launch a new brand of coffee in Pakistan (marketing the product, sales, profits coming in)
Phase 2: Starting home grown coffee pilot project and then expanding it to gradually replace imported coffee
Phase 3: Launching Coffee school in Pakistan (This will result in other entreprenuers launching their coffee cafes in Pakistan like starbucks, etc)

Kindly confirm if my understanding is correct

Dear Haroon,

Thank you for you kind reply and i'm gald you actually read about India's biggest home grown coffee chain and its plan. its true cafe coffee day is coming to Pakistan just like Coffee planet came to Pakistan as well. Ok i got answers for all of your questions let me answer one by one.

Launching a coffee brand means launching a coffee brand like Starbucks Total B2C but of a different league means a high end one its called specialty coffee brands ( Google and read about 3rd wave & Speciality coffee brands ) . Its different from the coffee chains you may see around like Espresso in Karachi , Coffee planet in Lahore and Islamabad. The end goal is to change the typical coffee culture we have right now in Pakistan which is very much commercial people dont know what they drink and they dont even ask what they drink.

My Brand would be Traditional speciality coffee brand where we sell coffee like coffee making in simple words a cafe. Not just selling coffee but coffee education as well plus we will be trageting home coffee users by selling them coffee making equipment small one not expensive with coffee beans so they can make high class coffee beans at home as well just like people do in UK as well as in UAE.

Hope you getting my point we do not have any competition with Nescafe or any other commercially packed coffee we got competition with brands like Espresso even i dont consider them a competition as they dont know what they selling and people who go there to try coffee they dont know what they buying its same like people dont know when they go to Mc donnald or KFC their taste isnt developved as they try junk food with pride.

Here we are talking about a whole different game of coffee which no one ever introduced in Pakistan and no one will any time soon as it requires knowledge of coffee and we do not have coffee experts in Pakistan and i can see there is a huge Gap in this market which inshaALLAH ill be filling in.

For Example i would like you to check Speciality Cafe's in Dubai check the Instagram page of stomping grounds opened by a good friend of mine in Dubai. Read about Tom & Serge or Read about Common Grounds or read about Joud Cafe in Abu Dhabi i can name 10s more as speciality coffee industry in UAE is growing rapidly which we are missing in Pakistan. People want quality and people got purchasing power why not serve them great coffee.

Next Stage i want to Launch Coffee training school in Pakistan its a first ever. We can train people for coffee making skills as its a art and science plus same training courses we can offer it to different coffee brands which are already in Pakistan so they can get their staff trained well and educated well to improve their standards. We will be launching courses for investors as well so they can launch their own brands plus we can provide them consultancy for business step to hiring to training to every aspect of coffee business.

Third stage which is for National level i want to launch Pakistan Coffee forum or Pakistan Coffee Association where we will build a platform for different up coming brands to join on one platform to take our brands to international market and its very much possible inshaALLAH i have confidence we can do it. Pakistan Coffee Association would act like a consultancy as well plus as a national platform for this coffee industry in Pakistan.

As you might think where we gona get coffee form. Well Intially i would like to get it roasted from Dubai i got contacts in all big coffee brands in UAE and there are plenty of amazing coffee suppliers in UAE.
Team? I know 10s of Great coffee people who are already working in coffee brands in Pakistan i can build a great team. Money we can talk about it. Its for Nice location - Equipment like coffee machines etc - Salaries - Marketing - Interior etc.

Coffee FAQ | Global Exchange
Coffee is the world's second most valuable traded commodity, behind only petroleum.

This is one the fastest growing industry in the world and guess what we are far far behind it in Pakistan and i really want to fill the gap.

Great, Thanks for clearing all my queries ;)
So i get the point what you are trying to do here.

I went to Dolmen hyperstar last week and saw Nescafe Dolce Gusto machines and they were selling their coffee there. Also, i saw somewhere here in PG forums in Market place a person selling that dolce gusto machines. Is it somewhat similar? Are they trying to get involved in specialty coffee brands?

Ill read about the details you mentioned about UAE brands

I just wanted to pitch in and say that this sounds like a really neat idea. I was recently looking for somewhere to get decent roasted coffee beans from, but I couldn't find a place that actually tells you where they source their beans from, when they were roasted etc. All I could come up with was one company named "Blue mountain" something that supplies coffee beans in Pakistan, and they didn't have a proper web presence or any information at all really for me to make an educated decision about ordering from them.

I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor and hope to see a branch of your new, specialty coffee house here in Peshawar (1) Also, when your setup is up and running (in sha Allah), if say your first outlet is in Islamabad, it'd be nice to have a website or something where people from out of city could order coffee beans/grinders/brewers from your outlet.

Salam Bahi,

Thank you inshaALLAH it would be a project one of its kind. I got great marketing plans as well to introduce our coffee / cafe brand to the public so much we can do. Plus Blue Mountain ah well if you are talking about real blue mountain coffee beans then Blue Mountain coffee beans are one of the best coffee beans in the World. Last Brand in Dubai i worked for they serve blue mountain coffee one cup 42 DHS almost 1500 Rs lol But its amazing its the best. Do let me know if you are into coffee ill send you some amazing coffee beans.

Initial plan is to open in Islamabad later Lahore then inshaALLAH Peshawar and off course Karachi. I want to make a brand which we could take it to International stage InshaALLAH iam very positive about it. Webpage offcourse its a part of plan to sell coffee beans , grinders and etc for home users you can buy it from us in future :D

Haha, I actually meant Blue Mountain Trading based in Karachi, but yeah everyone raves about that Blue Mountain coffee. Maybe we'll get to try it in your joint one day ^_^.

I was going to get a grinder and a brewer but when I saw that there was no proper retailer here from whom I'd be able to get good roasted beans on a regular basis, I dropped the idea. So, until your endeavors bear fruit, I'm stuck with the old Nestle coffees :/

I hate to be the devil's advocate but I feel it's a bad idea. Won't go into details but a few key points to remember:

1) Pakistan isn't a coffee drinking nation. In Pakistan, Tea > Coffee, both historically and in present times. Best example is the success of new age chaai dhabas such as Chotu etc.

2) Specialty coffee may be a success in Dubai and Western Nations but the key difference is that they have a lot of disposable income which Pakistan doesn't.

3) You will be catering to an niche, quite narrow market. The 0.09% public who are rich enough to afford the product or coffee aficionados which are few here

These are some of the points I can think of. My purpose isn't to splash on your idea but to help you save your investment. You can PM me if you wish to discuss further.

Salam Bro

Thanks for your comments. I can answer as i understand from your comments that you are not aware of F&B market in Pakistan no offence but things are changing if i tell you the money coffee brands are making in Pakistan it may change your perception.

For every business their target audience is different and specific its same like If you want to buy Iphone or Chines Phone both are phones but their target audience is different and their market is different. Absolutely my business target audience is a niche market rather lower income people. I have done extensive research in this business and i believe if Espresso Lahore can make a half Million Rs a day from their Lahore outlet trust me my business plan is much better then them we can make double with better product and services much better some thing which no one is offering in Pakistan as we speak and i can bet on it NO ONE IS OFFERING WHAT I WANT TO OFFER IN PAKISTANI F&B MARKET SPECIALLY COFFEE IS CONCERN AND THERE IS A HUGE DEMAND HUGE.

Coffee planet Pakistan what they sell? Coffee with suger syrups? Sandwiches from third party which no one ask when people how they are being made? In this Country people dont ask questions when it comes to food and some thing new which is also being a part of their life style .

I'm absolutely convinced that i can do it and inshaALLAH i'll if Espresso Pakistan can do it with their low grade coffee and food trust me we will do it with High class product and i'll give them challenge in the market. All you need to have is right strategy and good team which i have and rest is all good.

My concept is not just specialty coffee its a cafe concept - High Class Coffee - Freshly Made in Store Food - Great Customer service & Education there are the core values and USP's which i believe is the key to success.

Still i would love to take comments it always give me chance to explain things to people which i love and ill keep explianing. Please feel free to comment.

Good post but a few variables to consider:

- As someone pointed out Pakistan is not a coffee country. We are seasonal consumers.
- There are three drinkers of coffee in Pakistan, people who are forced to drink it because it sounds better in a cafe, people who drink sweet ass coffee, people who drink their coffee without sugar. The third kind is your customer and rare by every definition of the word, the first kind and the second kind is the customer you want to be catching. Why? That's where the money is! Consider starbucks shitty, but it's business model is ripe for success here simply because people here are shoda's here and nothing is a better for anyone's self image then a check in at Starbucks vs. your newly minted local coffee brand trying to sell bitter brew to non discerning customers.
- Specialty tea would be a better sell, by specialty I don't mean flavors. I'd buy tea from you regardless of me being a americano lover too, we've already got at least three brands of differently weighted coffee here at least in branding but the void is in the tea. The market dynamics are ripe for that, because you've spent too much time with coffee this thing can work in Thailand they do coffee like we do tea and it's a matter of comfort for you but coffee is not what Pakistani's take comfort in. Show me one country where the cultural drinking pattern has moved from one hot beverage to another beverage noted in a academic research.

Thank you bahi for your thoughts and points,

My business model is not just a coffee i actually made it clear before its a Cafe. We got High Class Coffee / Tea- High Class Food - High Class educational customer service. Have you been to Espresso Karachi? Or Lahore or Have you been to Coffee planet Lahore or Islamabad? I'm sure you must have visited at least one of these places. They are making money its understood they are making money and i can tell you that Espresso name its self a great coffee drink but brand got no coffee sense absolutely nothing they serve 3rd class coffee even expired coffee beans i can tell you. People do visit them all the time.

The point is if some one is buying a cup of coffee for 300 Rs from Coffee planet with out knowing the fact that the coffee beans are probably expired they can buy from me i'm offering them better product which their money deserve may be 400 Rs but much much better coffee. The game is people are getting educated so do their taste. if India could do it we can as well. India built a home grown coffee chain made it the biggest coffee chain in india countering Costa , Starbucks etc its called Coffee Cafe day.

Today there is a need people got money and people want good products. I'm providing them those products which they probably enjoy in UK or Dubai. I'm not just selling coffee you can come for English breakfast for me in the morning before your office we would do it. Its a Cafe Business model but special focus on Coffee. Coffee is the next Tea do remember my words. if you tell people its a fashion and its a life style you need they would close their eyes and would your product. The marketing campaign i got is second to none for this market it would be first of its kind in Pakistan.

You cant change the whole culture but you can target who want change and willing to adopt change? My target customers are only who can afford 500 Rs coffee and they i can tell you they dont mind coffee it suits their life style. Tea is for middle class as a favorite drink talking as a business man i love tea by my self as well but as i got educated i saw the world i found out Coffee is great and i love coffee now.

Things are changing and one thing is for sure who ever goes first in the market with great new Idea he would make money and others to follow and i have that idea and expertise to do that.

- If Coffee was the new tea the European merchants would have had a field day turning it into our culture a century or two ago.- Cafe coffee day if I remember correctly opened in Karachi and closed down too or should I say failed miserably. In India even 1% of the market captured is much different then you capturing 1% of the market here. There population dynamics mean the slightest of reach there proves huge in numbers. Cafe Coffee Day worked not because of their Coffee it worked because it acted as a low cost but izzatdaar place to be for the young and burgeoning hip class of youngsters.- Espresso is not known for it's coffee, it is known for a place to be and noticed. - Coffee lovers exist, but your cafe will not be a success because of them it will be so because of people who are probably least interested in it. I'll reply to your comment in detail tonight i have answers. You are not understanding the game ITS A CAFE NOT A COFFEE SHOP. in cafe we take care of every thing but you have to have 2-3 great USP's and with USPs you cant survive in the market. All brands are same every one is selling same product why customer should come to me? Because i got some thing unique what other brands in market do not have and they wont have as they do not have expertise.

In my Brand i have to have great USP's which is critical to make a market differential other wise no one will come to me. Great USP's means you got great marketing campaign. Coffee Cafe day couldn't be successful in Pakistan as said because they do not have a strong USP they couldnt make a difference in market. I have a great USP i have in fact 3-4 market differentials which i could serve with out being challenged in market.

Britishers couldn't turn our culture into coffee culture because of cost. Coffee is expensive while at that time you could get tea from Srilanka easily. They could afford their self a coffee. Today London's coffee scene is one the biggest in the world. When you are opening some thing new in Pakistan there is always some difference of opinion and i actually loved it as you put your comments it surely give me new idea actually.

Rest InshaALLAH i have a plan and i have a great product and inshaALLAH soon i'll welcome you in our cafe

Show me one country where the cultural drinking pattern has moved from one hot beverage to another beverage noted in a academic research.
The UK was predominantly a tea drinking country and now they drink coffee like no one else. Same with some arab states.
