Sadly, this thread has again turned into an anti-apple rant-fest.

To the OP... I've seen my fair share of gadgets. I'm not easily impressed. But when I first saw the iPad and used it, I was awed. It is a great fusion of technology, user-friendliness and excellent applications.

The applications are all optimized for the display size, and the capacitive touchscreen. People who say that the iPad is just an over-sized iPhone are ignoring the fact that iPad has its own apps which are built specifically for that form-factor.

Last thing that I should mention is that they are small almost equal to a ipad and cost less.
Yeah I wrote the above sentence but where does it mention that a netbook is smaller than an ipad? I wrote "almost equal" not smaller.

They're nowhere near the size of an iPad when opened an in an equally functional state. If you're going to be pedantic as a last resort, then yes, you are correct.

Not at all, they serve different purposes. You wouldn't buy a netbook in addition to the laptop you already own, surely. The problem is, the OP requires a tablet for very basic tasks and ubuntu83 here is arguing over why a netbook is better, without taking into consideration the OP's request and that they might already own a portable computing device.
Ah missed that. I think you missed this line in the OP's post:

The netbook is considered a portable solution isn't it?

i dunno why you have a hard on for netbooks but imo an iPad is much more convenient to carry around, read from in bed, travel with, and carry to inhospitable locations . as a pure portable device it is vastly superior. extra shit not required.

At the moment my personal recommendation is an IPAD 2, I am sure your money will not get wasted if you are "really" looking for a tablet and plus it's more than enough for your requirements.

PS: before someone points out about android, I would like to say that I have seen and used few android tablets as well :)

I guess the battle is over, ammar and ubuntu, live happy with your netbook,
While Me, AsknAsk, hackmod and iNF3RN0 would continue using ipad since we own a 13inch sleek and slim laptop which is hell of a better choice than tablet....
:p

Yeah if someone fails at using 2 cores with almost an equal performance to a dual core k8 processor and DX11 graphics with performance almost equal to a HD5450 (Which is enough for the netbook's native resolution) then what else can I say other than sigh!

Okay I'll go along with your lack of argumentation.
"Portable" means something that can be transported.
A tablet is easier than a netbook to transport and use. It's portable to use since it's just a slate and doesn't expand to twice it's own size when in a functional slate.
But you want to get into semantics, and then this is definitely a portable solution too:

A lot of things are portable. It depends on what is within reasonable limits. As an example, desktop replacements are essentially powerful machines to be used in place most of the time, but can be moved from time to time. They're portable, but not exactly in the same sense as a tablet. Netbooks are closer but not on the same level.

Netbooks arnt slow. WTH have you guys been using?
They aren't slow per se, but they sure aren't fast when you try to use them as full-blown PCs, which most users end up doing after they buy one. Why buy something that "can function" as per the OPs needs rather than something that is meant to function for his needs?

I doubt the OP jacks off to benchmarks and vague "almost equal" statements. An iOS/Android tablet does basic tasks better than a netbook. Simple as that. I'm not going to buy a netbook and turn it on to put an appointment in, or read a document. It feels much better and comfortable to read a book on a tablet, for one, and I'm sure many would agree. It's easier watching a movie on a tablet too, because you can put it comfortably in your lap or in bed or wherever. It's a different machine and for a different purpose. A simple user would not care if you list out hardware specs and compare it with desktop PCs because they can simply not perform the job as efficiently and conveniently as a tablet. You're missing that fact.

As I said earlier I feel more comfortable with a netbook. It's not as large as a full blown Laptops and has good enough specs so it's more portable than a Laptop. For reading books the E-book readers are there. A Back Lit LCD just not feels right for reading (If you feel comfortable with concentrating your eyes on a torch albeit a lowered powered one then what can I say it's your choice). For occasional reading both netbook and ipad are equal. A netbook is also better at multitasking. A netbook can't be placed on a bed or lap? That's a revelation.

Score 1 for game pass. I wouldn't pay full price for this at retail either.

Just downloaded my first legit digital PC game on GoG at a discount of $8: Two Point Hospital. The same team behind Theme Hospital Two Point Studios now part of Sega. And I am having more fun than most recent AAA games except of course BG3.

Still, I don't like either Sony or Microsoft as they are focusing more on corporate greed than delighting customers. PC gaming is best of gaming and worth every penny.

PC Gamer score of 58/100 for Hellblade 2??? Is it really worse than Gollum that was 64/100? Microsoft games can't even come close to high scores of Sony exclusives apparently.

About the Microsoft (and Sony) debate, I feel both have become too greedy and losing their minds over corporate greed. Personally, I will never buy any console next gen and switch to PC gaming where democracy reins.
