I had enrolled in a university as an Electrical Engineering major in 2012. I failed in second year and took a break to improve the subjects. Tried to improve the summers, did not. Now I am standing where I was a year ago. I can continue my degree but it will be hard with all the burden and there is no flexibility. I am thinking of abandoning the degree and becoming a sysadmin after a bit of training. How much according to your experience does the degree matter. Also, I have no idea of the market. How is the pay of a sysadmin. What do you think I should do. Continue the degree of knock it off. I love learning but hate classes and there are times when it is impossible for me to sit in the class.

well sitting in class is a different thing and learning is a totally different thing. you can sit in class and read your own stuff in a sequence. if you plan to live in Pakistan (even abroad) a degree will matter a lot. the only case where having a degree doesn't count is if you start your own business

electrical engineering becomes a little tough during the second year but its not something that's not doable. you can ask ur friends to understand topics, post it on some forums (even here) but leaving the degree and moving towards a sysadmin wouldn't be recommended in my opinion.

PS: electrical engineering has many aspects, its not necessary that you excel in all of them. you just need to be good in 1 to make it through. i hated the communication subjects but out-performed in the computer engineering ones. but that didnt stop me from getting the basics of communication etc

Bro, I think you should give it another shot, even my second year was crap ! I was in warning meaning i had a cgpa below 2. I didnt give up, worked hard and eventually came out of it, turns out it wasn't that hard if you give it a thought. I did my bachelors in 4 years and Alhamdulilah today i'm an Electrical Engineer. I'm a graduate of FAST and people here who are familiar with that university must have a pretty good idea how they made us Gadha all 4 years. So just to make you happy, life has its own ups and downs and you got to face it, accept it as a challenge that you cannot loose, tension na lo bro. Just go with it, keep studying. And after 2 years you will realize that the decision you made now is a thappa on your career and character. May Allah guide you towards your destiny and give you immense knowledge to overcome every odds. Ameen

Its because your have no interest in the area. Perhaps you should change your discipline and secondly maybe a change in scenery(a different university) will help you. I always believe a fresh start is what really is required sometimes even if you are doing the exact same thing but in a different setting.

First, tell us what interests you. It can be as simple as calculations, drawing, reading, etc.

Drawing -> BS in Fine Arts or Fashion Design
Reading -> English Literature
Calculations -> Accounting, Chartered accountant

I enrolled in Electrical Engineering in the year 2013. I kept complaining how bad things are and said to myself I will leave. I didn't study but still managed to pass with gpa <2.0. I left the uni. This year, I enrolled in CS at FAST. Its even harder than the previous uni, but I am actually expecting a gpa 3.0+. I got a D in programming back when I was in EE, however, now, my programming skills have increased without even much effort. I still complain about things here (a bad habit) but I try not to pay attention to negative thoughts anymore. After leaving EE I was so depressed that I thought about doing BA and MA English or literature. But now, even at a harder place, I believe things are never that hard, you just have to convince yourself that you NEED it! If you start thinking you need the degree real bad then you can do it. Drop some courses, ease off the load, it will take more time for you to graduate but late graduation is still better than no graduation. University can become as hard as you make it. Also think about what you want. If you are not interested in EE then change the field, get a fresh start, but no matter what you do, do get a degree. My cousin did something like this, and he's paying the price now. Good luck!

Thanks all for your responses. Sorry for late reply, my internet was gone. I have decided to go with the Engineering. I was a bit depressed yesterday and did not write the post in a manner i should have.
The reason I was thinking of quitting was ke iss mian dil nahi lagta. I take online courses on the same subjects taught in the class and enjoy them a lot . They just don't resonate with the class courses and therefore, in spite of knowing better than other people, I cannot solve the specific problems given in the class. For example I went for a the lab viva, I prepared some topics and I actually knew what was happening. When I went to the teacher, he asked me questions which by no means were checking my concepts. I once asked my teacher how does the capacitor cause the current to lead(probably some of the first things you read in circuits class is leading lagging currents and complex power.) and he didn't know. He just knew how to solve the the equations. Heck, I think he didn't even know what the complex power is in the layman terms. nor does anybody else for what it matters.
Online, its fun because I actually know what is going on. I don't have to cram anything but yesterday, as I was thinking of actually quittting the engineering and going into the market, I had nowhere to go. Partly because I do not know the market and partly because I cannot go to an emplooyer and say "I am the best X in the area." I am not an Electrical Engineer, I am not a software developer heck, I am not a proper web developer either. Then it hit me. No matter how lousy the Engineering is, it will create opportunities for me and go to stick with it and improve it as far as I can.

For the sysadmin stuff, I am good with computers. I spend a lot of time with them. Learning linux, different programming languages and am also part of a team which is creating a very beautiful download manager(better than idm, at least in looks and works on all platforms) so i have decided to give my days to the engineering and nights to the computing.

Thanks all, you guys are really great. now I know how important it is to have a degree.

Why don't you change your discipline and go into computer engineering or computer science?

I got admission in NUST Electronics Engineering (BICSE) around 5 years ago. I spent one year there and it was torture. My GPA was horrendous and I had little to no will to study. I eventually withdrew because I knew I cannot continue to do something I am bad at and will hate myself in the future for doing.

I then enrolled myself in BBA, started from scratch and am now doing MBA from NUST. It was to this date, the best decision I have ever made in my life.

Quitting comes with a price. Unless you have financial resources to back you up with this decision, DO NOT proceed (with quitting decision). Also, quitting is not an option when you are "almost done". For example, quitting when failing in one, two or even three subjects, in final year Multiple Times ... well, i think such person needs to be b*tch slapped some sense into him/her. No harsh intentions towards you.

If it makes you feel any better, I failed in my Bachelor's ONE subject THREE times. Didn't let go. Passed at fourth attempt with 87% marks. Its the story of my life ... because it didn't stop there :ninja: Neither did I. -_-

Put in effort now, make the right decisions now, put in the time NOW

So you won't regret this later.

NOW IS THE TIME TO DROP EVERYTHING AND PUT ALL YOUR Abuses will lead to ban EFFORTS INTO YOUR STUDIES

Do it once, do it right

Years from now you will look back and feel good about it otherwise the guilt and regret will ruin your career and future.

And if it makes you feel better,you are where you dreamt to be 10 years ago . Don't ruin all the hard work and time you spent to get where you are just because of some cloudy judgement . Plus you have a great opportunity to be doing Electrical Engineering . I don't even know how I'm going to be getting into any Uni here in Pak if I don't get a chance to go abroad.

Dude, you're half way through, just put in a little more effort and see it all the way.

I am doing Computer engineering, which also has a lot of electrical engineering subjects. I know they can be a Abuses will lead to ban but trust me how a little bit more effort can improve your understanding and grades. You just gotta shift around your priorities, change your routine a bit and tough it out. In the end, the satisfaction of success will be unimaginable.

Normally in these cases, student does not take interest in subjects that result in failing grades etc. Allah ne sab ko damagh dia hai it's up to us when and how we use it. I would suggest you to give one last try by putting everything into it. And if you again fail, then simply close this chapter and start a new one, the one that you like and won't fail in completing it (be it a certification or degree or diploma)
My scenario

Childhood - love of computer since the age of 5 (when i first saw my cousin's Pentium 80501)
Matric - decided to go with computer studies while my parents were all set to send me to medical field. Passed with 87% marks
Inter - parents forced me to enroll in FSC pre-eng even though I warned them that I will not be responsible for bad grades. Did everything I could. Passed with 63% marks, barely making it out in Chemistry.
Bachelors - by this time, parents knew what were my liking and disliking and didn't force me to do engineering or anything else. Enrolled in BCS. Topped my CS batch of 09.

Moral:- Do what you like to do. If engineering is not your thing, leave it. But if you chose engineering yourself, then I cannot say anything because then it's totally your fault that you cannot even get over something that you like.

Ask your parents advice as well. They are the best help you can get.

Degree is only important for getting your first job, after that experience and proven ability matters over education. So obviously the first step is to complete your education, or if your lucky...get into a career that requires experience over education. Like, consulting for example. I only completed by BS degree by the skin of teeth and now I have MBA graduates under my supervision. So... Luck+education+dedication and references ...not talking about "parchee" when i say reference, i meant professional references, as in people who would vouch for you, people you work with. That is the mix for having a good career.

So, education is not the only thing that is important, but it helps you make the first step to success...I think you should complete your degree...because a system admin is a dead end job. What you need is a career, where you are at least making 100k plus( per month) to have a good life and support a family. May be not now, but 5-10 years from now you will be thinking you should have completed that degree.
