The Darkness is one of those games that leaves an impression like no other, its difficult to put into words just how awesome the world of darkness is! You just have to experience it first hand. The stylized urban environments, the characters, the story, the music! It’s a cinematic dream come true.
The story is riveting with some of the most developed characters in video games ever, the game is packed from start to end with awesome moments and great dialog. And oh, Jenny Romano is the hottest game chick ever!
Darkness starts off as your standard first person shooter but it doesn’t last long that way, without spoiling the story, you acquire the darkness powers pretty early, creeping dark is the first power that you get which allows you to send a tentacle wiggling around the environment, stealth killing enemies and devouring their hearts.
The powers are more effective in the dark obviously so shooting light sources is a plus, you also devour hearts which increase your darkness level and unlock new powers.
Later on the game you get a whole bunch of darkness powers, including the darkness guns but the most awesome power is without doubt the black hole! Its exactly what you think it is! A FCKIN PORTABLE BLACK HOLE, place it on the sky and watch that police chopper get sucked into oblivion.
The game takes place primarily in New York but you do go on for a ride in another environment, I wont spoil it for you but that place is an artistic masterstroke, the weird art and characters just lend to the already spooky settings.
Theres also minions, sadly they are a let down L nothing but cannon fodder usually although they do crack out some pretty funny lines. But Overlord’s minions > Darkness minions.
The missions are varied but the game does play a bit like rpg-lite, the gunfights are crazy after you acquire all the darkness powers! Demon arm ftw!
The new york levels consist of free roaming subway stations and districts. You’re moving around new york trying to figure out things or doing favours for others, lends it lots of depth and play time. The districts are deserted and really atmospheric, you just know something is gonna go wrong at the next corner.
The graphics are amazing, the character look great and the animations are so lifelike. The world is populated with little objects that you can interact with, after acquiring the demon arm you can also take the physics engine out for a spin. The darkness is also populated with max payne like goodies, fake posters, tv shows, music videos, hotlines are funny, interesting or just plain weird.
The music is out of this world! It has to be heard to be believed, the way it swells and fades out, a benchmark for all other games. The “other” levels are specially awesome, you just cant get enough of it.
Lets not forget about the darkness itself! The best voice over in video games ever! I have no doubt about that. Its creepy, unique and down right awesome. Just gives the game a whole new edge.
The multiplayer is so-so, playing as a minion is nice but gets old kinda fast, its worth around 10-15 hours of multiplayer playtime.
The Darkness is a unique experience, a cinematic game with great gameplay, story and characters. I cant stress this enough, if nothing, you should checkout darkness for the story alone! The 10 hours you’ll spend in this spooky world will be hard to forget for a long time and by the end you’ll be asking for more.
