PTA recently launched the DIRBS portal for mobile device verification if it has been approved by PTA.
DIRBS - Home

Anyone can share some details about what will be the impact of it on non PTA approved phones?

They'll need to get type approval through NOC if not used with a Pakistani SIM before a certain date.

This doesn't only affect kit phones but even other brand new devices that aren't officially sold here. Including ones you buy yourself from abroad.

If you buy a kit now, and use it with a Pakistani SIM, you're safe. But in the future, I can't say for sure.

Stupid move by PTA imo.

Well, I bought a Huawei from online store in pakistan so I reckoned it would show both IMEIs (dual SIM phone) as PTA approved. But to my surprise the IMEI linked to SIM 2 was not registered with them as I had never used a SIM in it and I was getting a message to insert a SIM in that slot and make a call/sms before a date (don't remember what it was).
So I think it should be the case with other phones as well even when bought from local markets, you have to use it at least once so that it registers in PTAs record.

The iemi for one of my sim slots wasn't registered. I made a call. But it still says that it's unregistered. Does their system update the status of the iemi after you make a call or sms?
If it's already been used with a Pakistani SIM, then it won't be blocked.

Try making a call from a mobile number to another mobile number, but the call should be longer than 5 minutes.

Is your phone the officially sold Mi Max 2, or a Chinese import?

Chinese import. I can try that but just wanted to confirm, that would the app then show that iemi as registered? Have you tried yourself?

Their website says make a call / SMS to register it, so technically it should be.

My officially sold PTA approved phone says 'Compliant' for both IMEIs.

Malaysian import Samsung phone says 'Valid' for the first IMEI but it says make a call or SMS for the other IMEI.

I'll just try activating it now by swapping my SIM around.

Do tell us the status whether it got activated after that or not. I'm in the same boat.

All the unused SIM slots are currently working.

Tried on both my dad's phones and my sister's phone. Put a local SIM in the 2nd slot and although they're working fine now, and I've made a call and sent SMS, the status on PTA says 'Valid', but still shows the message saying I should make a call or SMS before 29th June for Auto registration.

I'll leave the SIM cards in Slot 2 for the whole day today and see if anything changes. Have done the same for my own phone which wasn't bought here and will update if the status changes on PTAs site.

After using the main SIM card in slot 2 for over 12 hours, there was no change on PTA's website.

Same message with the orange exclamation mark saying 'Valid, please make a call or SMS before 29/06/18 for Auto registration'. Plenty of calls were made, and received, as well as SMS, but still the same status.

I have a question.

I was recently browsing Pakistani E-commerce websites for buying a family gift (since i'm out of UAE), and saw that Shophive has listed some handsets as "PTA Approved". I ain't got time to search the web for this sh*t. Can anyone just give me a TL;DR version please?

I know about the DIRBS system implemented by PTA, but what's this PTA approved thing?

And those imported handsets (like some websites are selling), what's the issue with those?

PTA approved means they're immune from the whole DIRBS thing. No approval or NOC needed, they'll work fine out of the box.

PTA approved phones are those imported officially through the manufacturer themselves or by an authorized distributor or reseller. All taxes and duties are paid and PTA has the IMEIs of all these phones.

Soon, when the deadline passes, they'll make non PTA approved phone users have to fill out a form and pay taxes on their phone (if not already paid) only then will they be allowed to connect to any local networks.
