[h=1]Why Gotham Can't Call Jerome or Jeremiah 'The Joker'[/h]

Gotham star Cameron Monaghan and the show's producer John Stephens have confirmed that the character Jerome is not the Joker and also that the show will never be allowed to use a proper version of the iconic Clown Prince of Crime.
The Batman prequel series has survived for four seasons on FOX, introducing a bevy of Batman's villains long before Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) donned his cape and cowl. The series has leaned heavily on origin stories for the likes of Penguin (Robin Taylor) and the Riddler (Cory Michael Smith), and it has introduced memorable versions of Ra's al Ghul, the Mad Hatter, and Poison Ivy. Young Bruce Wayne's relationship with Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova), who will one day become Catwoman, has been one of the who's most rewarding so far. And yet, the show has always played coy with whether or not Monaghan's dual role ofJerome and Jeremiah Valeska would become the Joker, which isn't a possibility anymore.

Cameron Monaghan confirmed on Twitter that not only is his character not the Joker but thatGotham is barred from using the character at all, as Warner Bros. perhaps only wants the Joker to appear in the DC Extended Universe films (as well as the standalone Todd Phillips Joker film). Monaghan's not even allowed to sport the trademark green hair.

Various hair tests. Pure green was off-limits to us (as well as the name "Joker"), a decision from high-up as they wanted to reserve these for films. A decision which ultimately I respect. They did not want to dilute the very lucrative brand. It allowed for creativity on our end.

Producer John Stephens confirmed that Monaghan is not the Joker in an interview with IGN, though he suggested in his mind Jerome and Jeremiah may be indirectly shaping an offscreen Joker.
The other characters are who they are. Mad Hatter, Scarecrow, etcetera. But no, he isn't the Joker. What we've always gone with is that Joker is somewhere out there, anonymous and unformed, in Gotham, and he's watching the actions of Jeremiah and Jerome and possibly even another one, on his way somewhere down the line, and he's adopting them as inspirations as the person he'll one day become.
This would appear to be yet another instance of Warner Bros.' inscrutable policy on characters appearing in multiple forms over different media platforms at the same time. Fans first became aware of the policy when the 2001 Justice League cartoon was unable to use certain Batman villains in deference to the newer, unrelated animated series The Batman. The issue has cropped up in some strange ways in the Arrowverse as well; Arrow was required to kill off most of its version of the Suicide Squad so that the team could be used exclusively in their own movie, yet there seemed to be no problem with both Ezra Miller and Grant Gustin playing The Flash at the same time.

This may all end up a moot point, as
Gotham has yet to be officially renewed, with its fourth season finale wrapping up next week. If the show's end is truly here and it never gets to properly delve into the mind of the Joker, then, hopefully, fans will be happy with the Valeska brothers as something of a prequel consolation prize.

Gotham season 4 concludes with "No Man's Land" on May 17th on FOX.

[h=1]Gotham Season 5 Adapting Batman: Zero Year Comic[/h]

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for the Gotham season 4 finale.
Gotham may only have one season left, but it seems like the show's creative team are pulling out all the stops to give fans a Batman origin story that they will not only recognize but also enjoy. Not only has the series begun to adapt the No Man's Land story arc from Batman comic books, but there are also plans to adapt part of Batman: Zero Year for the show, too.
In Gotham's season 4 finale, the ravaged city of Gotham has become a war zone, as in No Man's Land, with different factions of villains struggling for full control. Although an earthquake caused the destruction of Gotham in the comic books in the No Man's Land story arc, the city if the FOX series suffered a massive attack by Jeremiah Valeska. The government took over evacuation efforts, but many stayed in the city, either by choice or because Jeremiah blew up the main bridge that led out of town. Gotham's fifth and final season will continue with that plot, but also incorporate other stories from the comics into the show.

In an interview with ComicBook, Gotham executive producer John Stephens talked about how some of the Zero Year story will make its way into the show next season:
"There are, and I'm trying to remember which [stories] they actually are. There's gonna be a little bit of Zero Year in there, you know as well. [You know] some of that stuff, especially with Nygma. And there's another one but if I tell you what it is it really does spoil the story."

On the television series, the Riddler turned up lifeless at the end of the season 4 finale, but he landed on Hugo Strange's operating table with very specific instructions to bring him back from the dead. Part of the Zero Year comic book story actually focuses on the Riddler, with the villain trying to put a stranglehold on Gotham to make the city his very own personal playground. This all happens at a time when Bruce Wayne is new to being Batman. Considering that Gotham's final season will focus on how Bruce Wayne becomes Batman,Zero Year is a very well-suited storyline to bring to fans of the TV show.

With season five being the final one for Gotham, fans can also expect to see
more familiar characters from Batman's comics, including Scarface, Orphan, and other villains. AlthoughGotham often seems like a separate universe from Batman comics, comic book fans do enjoy the nods towards classic comic book stories. Season 5 will continue that tradition, as well as give viewers their first look at a young Bruce Wayne as Batman.

[h=1]Penguin Will Be Fat in Gotham Series Finale[/h]

According to Gotham actor Robin Lord Taylor, his character, Oswald Cobblepot aka the Penguin, will be putting on the pounds in the series finale. With season 5 being the show’s last, Gotham is preparing the characters’ final transformations into the iconic figures fans know and love. Bruce Wayne will become Batman complete with Dark Knight Rises-esque Batsuit. Gotham may at last get its Joker. And Penguin will take on more of the attributes associated with him.
Season 5 is the show’s shortest with only ten episodes. But it also looks to be one of the show’s busiest. The final season will be following the No Man’s Land story arc as well as introducing even more villains for Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne to contend with. It has already been confirmed that Shane West will appear as Bane. Magpie will make her live-action debut. Then there is the possibility of Harley Quinn appearing to assist her puddin’ in terrorizing the city. Now it appears that more classic Penguin references can be added to the ever-growing list of things for fans to look forward to.

During the Gotham panel at New York Comic Con (via ComicBook), Taylor confirmed that in the finale, Penguin will look more like his comic book counterpart. When asked if he’ll be wearing a fat suit, Taylor replied, “Yes! Yeah, I get chunky.” According to showrunner John Stephens, Penguin and the rest of Gotham’s surviving residents will become more like their comic versions following a ten-year time jump in the final episode.

But Penguin’s build isn’t the only thing changing about the character. ComicBook later got the chance to speak with Taylor about plans for his character throughout season 5. Taylor hinted that fans can expect his iteration of the Penguin to acquire some of the props associated with the comic version, saying:

“I can’t spoil anything specific but definitely there are parts of the traditional iconography of the Penguin that are coming into play this year. We’ve done everything else with this character it has its own unique twists and it’s also earned and everything makes sense this character is turning into the traditional Penguin that we all know and so we see it visually as well as emotionally.”
Transforming Taylor’s Penguin into more of a classic version of the character will likely excite hardcore fans of the comics. The change may or may not be as well received by Gotham loyalists who have grown attached to the show’s spin on the iconic characters. Taylor’s Penguin has often been called the breakout character ofGotham and depending on how far the show’s writers intended to take his transformation, they could risk upsetting viewers who have stuck by the series. But while the show has had its ups and downs, Gotham has managed to keep audiences entertained with their dark and campy take on the Batman comics. Whatever Gothamhas in store for audiences, fans are likely to enjoy the ride up until the very end.
