[h=1]Gotham Season 4 Will Introduce Professor Pyg[/h]

The Gotham producers are introducing Professor Pyg to their world in season 4. It shows they’re not afraid of bringing the weird and violent characters from the comics to life. And since Bruce is stepping up his vigilante game for the fourth season, the villains are only going to get worse, too. While Professor Pyg isn’t one of the oldest villains in the Batman comics, he’s quickly become quite notorious because of the horrific acts he carries out.
To start with, he creates his own personal army of body guards called ‘Dollotrons’. They are people that Pyg has lobotomized and mutilated to do his bidding and the masks that they ‘wear’ are actually surgically attached to their faces. Did we mention that after Pyg is done with them, they’re genderless? That’s just one of the terrifying things that Professor Pyg has a love of doing.
[h=3]Related: Gotham Season 4 Teaser Arrives[/h]So if you thought that Gotham might calm down the villains they bring on just so Bruce can have some breathing room – you would be very wrong. While Gotham doesn’t include Netflix-level of brutality, it isn’t afraid to push boundaries every so often – and Pyg is a boundary that they’re definitely going to push. Executive producer John Stephens is excited about the villain appearing on the show:
For this year we’re bringing in one of my favorite newer villains. This might be the first time I’m saying this… because we’re bringing in Professor Pyg this year. And I’ve always loved Pyg because he’s just so demented and strange and gross and terrifying and funny. So, this year, I was like ‘Well, our show is pretty violent and graphic, how can it get more violent and graphic?’ I think Pyg is, maybe because he’s a newer character, feels more current to me in some ways. He doesn’t have some of the baggage of like a character from the ’60s might have where you have to like revitalize in a way. Pyg you can just bring in and he scares everybody.

Since the only version of Pyg we’ve seen outside of the comics recently that allowed the character to be as violent as he likes was during the Batman: Arkham Knight videogame, Gotham is going to create the first live-action adaptation of the character. That definitely has to be exciting for the writers and producers, but also a little daunting, too. Since we haven’t seen Professor Pyg in live-action yet, their treatment of him might be judged a little harsher than usual.
Well, after last season saw Bruce finally take up his vigilantism, season 4 sounds like it’s going to introduce more reasons that Gotham needs a hero. There’s no word as to how long Professor Pyg will appear on the show. But, if they’re writing in a villain that’s “pretty violent and disgusting,” chances are they’ll spread his appearances out over the course of the season.

[h=1]Gotham Season 4: Producer Teases Selina & Butch’s Villain Forms[/h]

As Bruce moves closer to becoming Batman, the fourth season of Gotham will also see a number of villains start looking more like their comic book counterparts. While incremental steps have been made to make Bruce Wayne resemble the Dark Knight over the past three seasons, Gotham has spent considerably more time fleshing out its villains. While many of them are responses to Batman in the comics, the M.O. of Gotham has been to make the various rogues a product of their city.
When season 4 of Gotham premieres at the end of September, we know Bruce will finally start taking steps towards his destiny. Set up during the finale back in May, the SDCC poster and Gotham season 4 trailer both tease Bruce’s journey towards vigilantism. However, while Bruce slowly takes his place as a hero, a number of supporting characters will be on their own path towards becoming supervillains.
TV Insider spoke with Gotham executive producer John Stephens and found out a bit more about where season 4 will take characters like Selina Kyle and Butch. For the former, it looks as if the proto-Catwoman will be learning more than just how to wield a whip from Tabitha:

“Those skills that you associate with grown-up Catwoman, we’re going to see Tabitha start teaching her at the beginning of this year.”

Likely, we’ll see Selina learn to be a better thief and fighter, two things she could use some work on. As for the bullwhip, she’s clearly already a natural. Meanwhile, Butch will be leaving his life as a mob enforcer behind and will be reborn as comic character Cyrus Gold aka Solomon Grundy:
“His arc next season is going to be exciting and a lot of fun. We wanted things to end in a bloody way for Butch, but we didn’t want to lose Drew because we love him…and the Cyrus Gold thing fit really well.”

While Grundy was teased during season 2 of Arrow, the version of Cyrus Gold we meet in Gotham will be much closer to the undead behemoth from the comics. As for Selina, she already looks the part of the master thief from the comics.
Catwoman and Solomon Grundy won’t be the only villains from the page manifesting in season 4. We know the young Jonathan Crane will be back in full Scarecrow mode when Gotham returns. Sadly, we also learned we will never see a version of Harley Quinn on the series, despite the clues to the contrary. Still, Gotham has a vast stable of villains to pull from – and the new set of younger rogues will give Bruce some threats more his speed, while he works on becoming the hero the city needs.

[h=1]Gotham Producer Teases Jerome’s Return in Season 4[/h]

Gotham executive producer John Stephens reveals a timetable for when Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan) might reappear on the series. While Batman possesses one of the most interesting rogues’ galleries of villains in comic book history, his most famous nemesis is inarguable: The Joker. The Clown Prince of Crime is definitely the Caped Crusader’s most notorious foe, and as Heath Ledger’s version of the Joker says in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, the two characters are likely to continue battling each other until the end of time.
Despite Gotham’s young version of Bruce Wayne still not quite ready to suit up as Batman – although that time is clearly drawing near – arguably the FOX drama’s most popular villain to date is Jerome Valeska. While Gotham’s producers still refuse to confirm one way or the other whether Jerome will fully evolve into The Joker to Bruce’s Batman, it seems likely that that’ll be the case, as Jerome is basically The Joker in all but name at this point anyway.
[h=3]Related: Gotham to Lean into ‘Horror’ in Season 4[/h]Having already risen from the dead once, Jerome wasn’t dealt with in a fatal way when he reemerged to terrorize Gotham during season 3. This time he was sent to a destination The Joker knows quite well: Arkham Asylum. Still, Arkham is infamous for its inability to retain its inmates, so it’ll obviously only be a matter of time until Jerome’s maniacal cackle will echo throughout the streets of Gotham once again. In terms of when fans can expect to see Jerome again, executive producer John Stephens offered the following comments during Comic-Con.
“What I will say about Jerome is that Jerome is in Arkham right now, and when you think about Arkham’s record of keeping people locked up, we will probably see him again before the end of the year.”

It’s a tad unclear whether Stephens meant that fans will see Jerome return before the end of the calendar year 2017 or the end of the TV season, but either way, it seems certain that the “proto-Joker” will make an appearance before the end of season 4. That definitely doesn’t bode well for the health of Bruce Wayne or Jim Gordon.
If and when Jerome does fully transform into The Joker that has been haunting comic pages for decades though, it looks like he won’t be getting his own Harley Quinn, as Stephens recently confirmed that Mr. J’s main squeeze isn’t in the cards for Gotham. He shouldn’t be too sad though, as there are plenty of other eligible psychotic women currently residing in the Gotham city limits.

[h=1]Gotham Season 4 Draws from Long Halloween & Batman: Year One Comics[/h]

The new season of Gotham will draw from two of the most definitive Batman tales from the comics. Gotham has always played fast and loose with the source material from DC Comics. Still, a number of things from the page have been translated to the screen over the course of the show. And though many of these adaptations have been met with mixed reactions, they’ve still allowed classic story elements to make their way to live-action.
Thanks to Gotham‘s panel at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, more information about the upcoming fourth season of the show has been revealed. Along with continuing the evolution of characters like Selina and Butch, Bruce will start to look and act more like Batman. Meanwhile, villains such as Scarecrow and Professor Pyg will be jumping from the page to the screen this season. But it won’t just be heroes and villains that will be adapted. Two major graphic novels will also serve as inspiration for season 4 of Gotham.

CBR was on hand at Gotham‘s SDCC panel where it was revealed that the first half of the new season will be loosely based upon Batman: The Long Halloween. Meanwhile, the second half will take cues from Batman: Year One. While the arcs won’t be recreated verbatim, fans of the two stories will get to enjoy a number of plot elements from the books.

Published between 1996 and 1997, The Long Halloween was created by writer Jeph Loeb (the current head of Marvel TV) and artist Tim Sale. In it, Batman is confronted with Holiday, a serial killer who uses his namesake to kill someone once a month. The story takes place during Bruce’s early years as the Dark Knight, so it’s a fitting story to bring to Gotham. It also includes a variety of rogues, including Mad Hatter, Poison Ivy, Solomon Grundy, Scarecrow, Catwoman, the Penguin, and the Joker. Considering all of those characters exist in some form on the show — assuming Jerome is Joker — a fairly faithful version of the story could make it to the screen.
Year One, meanwhile, was crafted by Frank Miller and artist David Mazzucchelli (who worked with Miller on Daredevil: Born Again, which partially inspired the first season of Daredevil). The 1987 story serves as the inverse of The Dark Knight Returns, with Miller retelling the first year of Bruce’s journey as Batman. Also inspiring an animated film and parts of Batman Begins, Year One is the perfect story for the writers of Gotham to look to. Not only does it flesh out Batman’s early years, but it reaffirms what the character is all about.
With the show looking to The Long Halloween and Year One for inspiration, the new season of Gotham should be an exciting one.

[h=1]Gotham: Drew Powell is ‘Giddy’ To Play Solomon Grundy in Season 4[/h]

Get ready to see Solomon Grundy on the small screen. The latter half of Gotham season 3 played host to lots of big changes, including the unceremonious deaths of several regulars. One of those regulars was Butch Gilzean (Drew Powell), a high-ranking figure in Gotham’s criminal underworld who had worked either with or against just about every notable villain in the city. While Butch was often frustrated by his inability to ascend to the top of the criminal pack, he at least usually occupied a second-in-command-type spot on the organized crime food chain.
While Butch did indeed meet his demise late in season 3, as did many characters on Gotham, death will not be the end for him. As revealed in the season finale, Butch was born Cyrus Gold, aka noted Batman villain Solomon Grundy. Introduced to comics way back in 1944, Solomon Grundy is an imposing brute of a villain that is usually depicted as a literal zombie, although his origin has changed a few times over the many years he’s existed.
[h=3]Related: Gotham Season 3 Explores Alfred’s Past ‘Indirectly’[/h]Powell was asked by Comic Book for his thoughts on Butch’s end and Solomon’s beginning, and responded with the following comments:
“Giddy like a school girl I think is probably the most accurate way to say it. I am very excited.”
“Even shooting that scene with Erin [Richards] and I, it was kind of the end of the day, I remember it was raining, we kind of had to do it quickly, and so it all kind of happened so fast and it was only after that I was kind of like, ‘Oh yeah, I guess Butch is dead now.’”
“I do think there’s going to be a lot of Butch still in Grundy and I think that makes perfect sense in the way that [producer John Stephens] and the writers have set this up and so I’m really excited to kind of now bring the two together in this new character that I really love.”

Of all the existing characters on Gotham, Butch definitely seems like the best fit to become Grundy, although one wonders if such a transformation was always in the creative plans. Physically, Butch certainly fits the bill of a Grundy type, regularly using his size and strength to intimidate both enemies and underlings while serving in various capacities in the Gotham underworld.
It remains to be seen just how soon into season 4 that Butch will resurrect as Grundy, but when he does, one assumes there will be hell to pay for anyone who ever crossed the monster during his previous human life. Of course, it’ll be hard to get direct revenge on his killer Barbara Kean, as she’s currently deceased too. Still, based on Gotham’s history, it’s doubtful that she stays that way for long.

[h=1]Gotham Season 4 Casts Fringe Alum as Professor Pyg[/h]

Michael Cerveris will reunite with FOX this fall to tackle the role of the villainous Professor Pyg in the upcoming fourth season of Gotham. While most of the main villains on Gotham are big names from the comics that have been adapted multiple times, the show has also allowed for lesser-known foes to arrive and vex the GCPD. Throughout the three seasons of the show so far, rogues great and small have emerged in Gotham City, with fewer and fewer heroes to check their advances. Beginning next season, we’ll see a number of new characters arrive, like Carmine Falcone’s daughter. We’ll also get the live-action debut of the manical Professor Pyg.
Created by Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert for 2007’s Batman #666, Pyg is Lazlo Valnetin, a man obsessed with using surgery to ‘perfect’ his victims. Taking his name from the Greek story of Pygmalion who fell in love with a statue that came to life, Pyg’s porcine mask hides a sinister villain underneath. We’ve known since July that Pyg will feature in Gotham‘s fourth season, but now we finally have a face to go behind the mask.

TV Line is reporting that Michael Cerveris will be joining Gotham this year as Professor Pyg. Recently appearing on The Tick and The Good Wife, Cerveris is perhaps best known for the playing September the Observer from Fringe. The FOX series dealt with plenty of body-horror and renegade science, so the transition from anti-hero to villain should be made easier for Cerveris thanks to the thematic through-line.

Along with being a prolific serial killer, Pyg is aided in his work by his Dollotrons. These are mind-controlled beings he’s worked on, grafting doll masks to their face and forcing them to obey his every whim. Though not much to handle on their own, the sheer numbers Pyg commands augments their threat.
The theme of transformation will be a big one this season, not only because of Pyg. We’ll see Selina morph into Catwoman, Jonathan Crane return as a fully-formed Scarecrow, and Butch will receive his origin as Solomon Grundy. And with so many new villains, we’ll also finally see Bruce make his first steps towards becoming Batman. The latest teaser for the show offered us a glimpse of his first costume, which mirrors the iconic suit he may someday wear on the series. Gotham has always been a show with more villains than heroes, but it looks like things might begin to change in season 4.

[h=1]Gotham Casts The Flash’s Peyton List As The New Poison Ivy[/h]

The Gotham version of Poison Ivy is set to evolve yet again, as the series brings on former Mad Men and The Flash actor Peyton List to become the latest evolution of the character. The move makes List the third actor to take on the role as Ivy Pepper has undergone some dramatic changes since the series began. And according to the announcement by FOX, List’s version will bring the character closer to the plant-controlling villain popularized in comics, cartoons, and video games.
List joins the cast roughly a season after Maggie Geha stepped into the role previously held by Clare Foley, who first played the part on the show. Foley’s version of the character was a young child known as Pamela ‘Ivy’ Pepper until her involvement with the Dr. Hugo Strange storyline in season 2 saw the character mature rapidly. The sudden shift was meant to put Ivy on the path to becoming more of the vegetation-obsessed supervillain, which would make it easier to fit her into the series’ ongoing storyline of classic Batman rogues running amok in a Gotham lacking a full version of the Dark Knight. That plan never really came to fruition, however, and now it seems Gotham is set to see Ivy Pepper transform yet again to begin her transition into a more comics-accurate green meanie.

In an official announcement from FOX, Gotham categorizes the casting as another step in the character’s evolution and even hints at a future Ivy storyline that will see her powers come into play. The announcement says:

In the continuing evolution of Poison Ivy’s origin story, Ivy Pepper has been transformed once again taking another step toward becoming the Ivy we know from the comics. Dangerous. A live wire of crazy energy. She’ll set her sights on Gotham, intent on making the city her own green paradise

Fans of comic book television will likely recognize List from her role as Lisa Snart/Golden Glider on The CW’s The Flash. She’s also starred in two other short-lived CW series, The Tomorrow People and Frequency, but List is perhaps best known for her role as Jane Sterling (née Siegel) in Matthew Weiner’s Mad Men, where she played the second (and much younger) wife of ad man Roger Sterling, until their eventual divorce before the series’ end.
List will help bring a sense of maturity to the character of Poison Ivy that was missing in both Foley and Geha’s iteration of the soon-to-be villain, which was a source of both frustration for fans and fuel for critics. It will also finally see the character transition into what many had likely hoped to see when the series was first announced. The List version of the character is expected to first appear sometime in 2018.

[h=1]Jerome Is Returning To Gotham Soon[/h]

Cameron Monaghan confirms that his character Jerome will soon return to Gotham. Since the beginning of the series, Gotham has packed in tons of Easter eggs for the Joker. Given the show’s focus on the origins of Batman’s greatest foes, this makes sense, but it also served to continually tease the audience without any real payoff. All of the ‘HAHAHA’ graffiti and incorporeal laughter, however, eventually gave way to Jerome Valeska – and Gotham‘s Joker was born.
Though fans have been told Jerome isn’t the Joker, he seems like the closest thing Gotham will ever get. His sociopathic behavior, ties to the circus, and penchant for theatricality have all made him a perfect proxy for the Clown Prince of Crime. Although his initial reception was mixed, fans have come to love what Monaghan has done with the character across his scattered appearances. Jerome may never be a full-time villain, but that doesn’t mean he won’t continue to terrorize Gotham in the future.

Sean Pertwee, who plays Alfred, and Cameron Monaghan both sent out tweets over the past week, confirming the return of Jerome in an upcoming episode of Gotham. Pertwee’s tweet shows the episode in question was shot last week (see below), so it could arrive before the midseason finale.

All I want to do is post spoiler pictures from @Gotham. I want to share with you guys. Can't wait.
— Cameron Monaghan (@cameronmonaghan) November 13, 2017
This week, Gotham will continue the hunt for Professor Pyg while pushing Bruce further and further into the darkness. Next week, meanwhile, looks to be the midseason break, considering how early Gotham premiered this fall. Given that, it may not be until the spring premiere of the show that Jerome returns.
During his last appearance, Jerome was brought face to face with Bruce. Their exchange not only marked the highlight of Monaghan’s time as Jerome, complete with a creepy new visage, but also connected him with his potential future foe. Gotham season 4 then began with Bruce stepping up as a vigilante, but he’s yet to take on any of the city’s big foes. Scarecrow was teased as a potential adversary, but he disappeared shortly before Bruce hung up his mask. Perhaps, however, the return of Jerome will bring the proto-Batman out of retirement.
In the meantime, Michael Cerveris is certainly filling Gotham‘s depravity quota with his villainous turn as Professor Pyg. Hopefully, he won’t be dispatched too quickly and he and Jerome can square off in a future episode. Whether it’s this year or early next, Gotham fans won’t have to wait much longer for Jerome to return.
