The event was cancelled last year and instead the players got Greevlings mode. This year Valve said it is confirmed or are they planning something similar like what they did before. The following are the updates received so far.

Find the Frostivus Wish-List of some worthy friend or prickly foe, and play the role of Furtive Frostus, gifting them with something they didn't know they wanted.Perhaps Antimage would like a Beginner's Box o' Magic! How about an electric blanket to warm the knees of Ancient Apparition? Maybe Lifestealer would like a new master! However you choose to celebrate the season, the byword is relaxation. Speculations:Tomorrow a massive patch will be released that welcomes Legion Commander as a playable hero, a new game-mode "Wraith-Night", Ranked Matchmaking (MMR) as well as the addition of Slark and Huskar to Captains Mode. Read on for all the changes about to hit your favourite game.
Skeleton King becomes Wraith King
More details have been revealed about the new game mode entitled "Wraith-Night". Apparently the Skeleton King has done one too many ressurections and is now at death's door (literally) and needs your help to complete a ritual only performed once in a millenium. In the new game mode players will assist the Wraith King - formerly known as the Skeleton King - by gathering Wraith Essence by killing enemy units. The Wraith Essence will flow into the King and if you survive until dawn then the Wraith King will be reborn.
For those looking for rewards and spoils of victory do not fear. If you perform well in defending the Wraith King then you will have a chance to win Phantom Fragments which can be saved up and put towards reliquaries (holy relics). As you can imagine there will be multiple tiers of fragments, with the pinnacle of them all, "a recipe to craft a Relic of the Wraith King". If the idea of a new game mode tickles your fancy then all the info in the official announcement.

*NEW HERO* Legion Commander
Patch 6.79c welcomes a new hero to the game, Legion Commander. The new Legion Commander has not only lost his horse from the original game, but also changed gender. Below are the skills for the hero which will be added to the main client tomorrow, 12th December.
Legion Commander Skills
Overwhelming Odds
- Deal damage and gain bonus movement speed for each enemy unit in a targeted area.
Press the Attack
- Remove debuffs and disables from an ally, while granting bonus attack speed and regeneration
Moment of Courage
- When attacked, immediately counterattack with bonus lifesteal.
Duel (Ultimate)
- Legion Commander and an enemy hero become locked in a duel. The surviving hero gains a permanent damage increase.

*NEW* Ranked Matchmaking Added
As reported on last week, ranked matchmaking will be introduced to the DOTA2 client which should heavily change the course of competitive dota for aspiring professional teams. Matchmaking Rating (MMR) will help track your progress and skill level and can be unlocked once you reach level 13, which is approximately 150 games. Once you have access to the feature you will play a series of 10 calibration games - similar to the five placements matches in Blizzard's Starcraft2 - to obtain your rating.

Patch 6.79C - Slark and Huskar added to Captains Mode + other changes
6.79c not only welcomes the addition of Legion Commander but also as is traditional of any major patch, a collection of tweaks and alterations to the game mechanics. This patch sees Huskar and Slark both added to Captains Mode, nerfs to Elder Titan in terms of damage and vision as well as to Crystal Maiden's base intelligence.
