I have heard people say that this method helps, but I am not completely sure about it, though I have used 2 refurbished devices for almost 2 years, didn't have any kind of issue at all,many people have issues though

They do this to check whether the device is locally refurbished or not, local refurbished sets have changed casing and stuff, factory refurbished ones are a safe bet whereas locally refurbished ones are no go, locally refurbished ones have sometimes loose, clunky back casing,this method is used just to properly check that afaik

There's also the issue of the phone's camera flash not working as advertised.

I got one from Saddar and at first the photos came out fine with flash. One month later, pics taken with flash are just unseeable.

Phone was on KitKat before and after. No software updates to OS or camera app for that matter.

Quite a few people who've bought a used Moto X XT1058 run into this problem.
I'm talking about the issue mentioned in post 9 and 10 of the above thread.

Got the phone today and so far no such issue mentioned in your cited thread. Getvar returns as normal and everything else is working fine. I'll let you know the shop and place from where I bought the phone AFTER testing the device thoroughly.

Condition of the handset is decent (mint - what they call such condition in the market) with some minor usage wear and tear which is good and gives me a satisfaction that the set is still in it's original condition.

This is the Moto Maker edition, jet black, all black, buttons, camera lens everything is black; like Akon has used it.

Though, there's a little dent at button left side of the back like it was dropped but rest of the condition is a lot better than what you normally get.

Oh, did I say it's full black?

Not sure what you're saying? The back is of rubber material so no matter where I press it feels so soft. Btw, NFC is there, I get notifications about it being enabled.

No, they're pretty solid and even better than my old Moto G I got brand new. They're tactile and clicky as well.

Well, if you can access 3g data on your phone, then APN settings are okay.
If not, you will be required to manually input APN settings.
Tethering generally does not work on carrier branded phones. I can confirm that about AT&T Motorola atrix HD and Verizon galaxy s3.
In addition to WiFi tethering, you can also check Bluetooth and USB tethering as I'm not sure about them but probably they also won't work.
I have a moto x 32GB version with stock Latin American retail ROM (no carrier branding or bloatware) and WiFi, USB and Bluetooth tethering work perfectly fine.

I am always able to get SoT of at least 4 hours irrespective of usage... depending upon use, the battery generally lasts between 16-24 hours but SoT of around 4 hours is always available..screen brightness auto...wifi and data radio always on though I have wifi available at home as well as work...so data usage is generally less.. variable usage pattern generally

about 4.4.4 ... you can go ahead... shouldn't be a problem..or u may check forums for any particular issues related to your phone model

That's great to know. I expect around the same since I was using the handset with 100% brightness and ran several benchmarking tests as well. I'll stick to 4.4.2 for now and update it straight to Lollipop when it comes out. It's strange that you still haven't got the update even though you're on a Retail variant.

if he has already got it unlocked somehow thats a different issue...but there is no risk in upgrading to 4.4.4 if the bootloader is already locked...
