I bought a HIGH CFM Minebea fan. Its one of those dreaded 4 wire 5 pin dell system fans.

Why I got it. 12V. 92mm. 2.5 A (140CFM)

Found a pic for 0.68 A versions

Now. I spliced the wires, which were Red, Black, White and Blue.

I spliced Molex wires. Red, Black, Black, Yellow.

I paired the red and black.

The problem. The fan will only start once I short the wires (Red and black) i.e +12V and Gnd. Otherwise, sometimes it starts with a slight nudge with the finger.

How do I splice and bind wires, to ensure it starts right?

Really would appreciate some help.

Hmm Got it.

Was a loose solder on the fan.

At 12 volts the fans were deafening.

Undervolted them to 12-5 = 7 Volts. Still... Hmmm. Shitze. Pretty loud. Will need to put a 3 way switch. 12volts. 7 volts and off.

140CFM for a 92mm fan is quite a lot. must be noisy as hell.

i have a Nidec tri-blade 120mm fan (120 x 38mm), 130CFM. i need more of these..

http://www.blackfiveservices.co.uk/fanspeedcalc.php < Go here and calculate the ohms you need on the rheostat. In the market they call it a 'variable'. Its a variable resistor.

I went for a duct, made with a painted pringles box to act as a silencer, and a 7V on off switch.

The other fan, im using a rheostat. Its running too warm, Im having to cool it with the other fan :p

I did get the wrong rheostat.
Will have to get the right one.

The LM317 circuit that shajeel told us about (in the other thread) costs around 180 to get made (aabpara). The LM317 has a high current variant too. LM98x. (upto 4 amps).

Gave the diagram to the guy. He will call me once he makes it and it works.

Simple rheostat not recommended.
On off switch, if you can live with that, recommended.

Getting the circuit made, and mounted in a little steel box. Recommended. I even gave him a 40 mm fan to attach to a heatsink he might have to use.

Lets see if it works.

That too must be noisy like hell :p ( A lesser hell perhaps ) :p
My GPU fan running at 77% makes much more noise, plus the nidec's in the back of the chassis, so its cool. it moves quite a lot of air and adding just one has reduced my system temps by around 3-5 Celsius, so the noise is worth it.

I got these from college road. :p
Also got a nidec 80mm for the right panel of the cm690. Turns out its 0.18 A

I already had a 0.3 A 80mm. So I aint using that.

Instead of shorting wires, why dont you just run the fan at 5V (mine didnt start, but once you turn them they work) or at 7V. (12 positive 5 negative).
At 7 V its very bearable.

Want CM led fans ? Those Galaxy ones ?

I have 3 spare :p
