Buying Advice for first console

Salams,
I am about to buy a PS3 today from a shop.
This will be my first console since the Sega Genesis, can someone tell me what I should check before buying and what are the most reliable shops for it in Karachi? Note that I can't buy from PG.
Budget is less than 20000.
I don't necessarly need it to be jailbroken.
Blu-Ray is a must because I am buying it in place of a Blu-Ray playerfor a 3D TV (those are above 11000 so I thought why not add more and get a console as well).


Also what are the general prices of older games (MGS4, Uncharted, Killzone etc) and can they be rented as well?
Maybe even a list of games I should try first.

You can't get a new PS3 for less than 20k.
I'm not sure about the prices but I think new one costs more than 24k.
If reliability is your main concern than you have no other choice than PG.
Most shopkeepers refurbish old consoles and sell them claiming new.

I'm not sure if games can be rented or not, MGS4 is old, MGS-5 is out now and new should be around 3.5k-4k. Don't know about others.

Used is fine as long as controller and power supply is original and everything including PSN works fine.
Which is another thing I forgot to ask. How do I identify that it is?

In the market you simply cannot, you will get conned. A sincere advice increase your budget and get a new one.

Is a new 12GB Super Slim good for 24000?

It's good but occasionally you will need space for some games. Certain games install stuff on hard disk before you can play them e.g. GTA V has a mandatory 8GB install. You will run out of space. Increase it a bit more and get a super slim with hard drive. I know it's easy to say increase the budget (I have been in this situation) but it will eventually give you more peace of mind in the long run. When I was buying my console (Xbox 360 S back in 2012) I was facing similar budget issues, and eventually I ended paying 8-10k more ! I could have saved all that extra money only if I had been smart/experienced enough to shell out extra 4k when I was making my purchase. Do your research properly before you make your final purchase.

Increase your budget and get a new one, never trust an old/used console. At least you'll have peace of mind that you have bought a new system and chances of issues are almost zero.

Kind of off topic:
I have to say, after having played several newer PC games, the visuals on the PS3 look horrible, however I have only played demos of Killzone 3 3D and Resistance 3. Currently have Uncharted 2 demo on download and will be buying some games today. And I did not realize that the given cable with is SD only, which is bad because my main monitor has only one HDMI port, one Component port and one VGA so I have to either use VGA on PC or use PS3 on component.

Don't you intend to use your PS as a Blu Ray player as well? You need HDMI for best results.

I intend to use it as a 3D blu-Ray player on the family TV which has 4 HDMI ports, there is no issue with that and I already have 2 HDMI wires.
When its not in use as a Blu Ray player, I can use it as a PS3 on my computer monitor, that one has only 1 HDMI port, one VGA port and component and analog ports. So if I want to download updates or demos in the background and use my PC on the same monitor, I have to connect PC via VGA or use PS3 in SD mode.
