ALL the confusion is due to the Tip. Actually, when you 75-3, the digit that comes is INCLUSIVE of tip.
I don't understand the desperation of "closing the thread" btw.

Since thread is bumped I might as well post an interesting word puzzle. Few clarifications though:
1- I didn't make the puzzle
2- The puzzle isn't particularly different from theme of similar puzzles, but the answer is definitely interesting

Here is the question:
Suppose I offer to give you three prizes A, B and C.
Prize A (most expensive) - highest priority
Prize B (less expensive) - lower priority
Prize C (cheap) - lowest priority

If you make a true statement then I will give you either prize A or prize B. If you make a false statement then I will give you prize C. To win the prize A or B, for example, you just have to say 2+2=4. But suppose you have your heart set on prize A. What statement could you say to win it?

Ermmm.... this statement is false?

Ermmm.... this statement is false?
Interesting answer, and the question could be considered somewhat ambiguous on these sort of answers. But I don't think this would count as a correct answer.

The reason is that your statement is supposedly a paradox. So suppose we called up some logicians to decide status of the quoted statement. They would most likely come to one of four conclusions:
1) the quoted statement is true
2) the quoted statement is false
3) the quoted statement is both true and false (hence not strictly an either true or false proposition)
4) the quoted statement is devoid of any content so it is meaningless

Note that in first case you can't guarantee that you would get your required prize. In the second case you would never get your required prize. In third case, either I could choose to give you any of the three prizes OR I could just say that you should give me a new statement that can be classified as either true or false.

In the fourth case the only reasonable thing I could do would be to ask you to provide a new statement OR maybe don't give any prize :p.

But in none of these cases you can guarantee that you will get your required prize. There is a simple answer that guarantees this.

Question main hi galti hai faltu main log behes kar rahe hain
Not sure you were saying this about my question or OPs. I might clarify my question further anyway since my above post was just the case of "over-analyzing" (which I happen to do quite a lot).

If you write the person giving the prize as P1 and the person accepting the prize as P2, then the premises of the questions simply are:
1) P1 has to give one of the three(exactly one) prizes to P2 (since he has promised to give the prize)
2) P2 has to make a statement that can be classified as either true or false (reasonably)

Benighted's answer doesn't satisfy the second condition.

This is interesting. I don't know why more people aren't participating.

"I want prize A" :d

Actually that is not too far off, even though incorrect. I didn't solve it without looking at the answer either :p .

Suppose you said "I want prize A". In that case(bit of over-analysis):
1) If I trusted you and thought you were telling the truth then you have just made a true statement. I would again give you one of prize A or B.
2) If I thought you were lying, I would give you C.
3) If I thought you were just indifferent to getting prize A, I would ask you to make a new statement.

But the real point here is simple. Even if I trusted you that you were telling the truth about wanting prize A, then you just made a true statement according to me. I would just give either prize A or prize B.

edit: "I will have something" is better form to put it into. Even though you might reasonably say "I want something" could also reasonably fall into true/false dichotomy (at least for those things where you aren't indifferent to).
