It’s no secret, that widescreen gaming is a pain in the ass. Finding the right in-game resolution that’s native to your monitor (which many games might not support), finding the perfect settings to make sure that your frame-rate doesn’t dive (making your games look like a slide-show), are just a few of the gazillion hurdles you encounter. Using a wide-screen monitor for gaming can make you tear your hair out, so you’d wonder, why opt for it?
Firstly, you’ve got to see the results for yourself. When you game using the large viewing area of a widescreen monitor, it’s the most 'immersive' experience ever. This experience will make each strand of hair that you’ve ripped out, seem worth it. You get so involved in the game that the outside world just fades away – phones go unanswered, the doorbell keeps ringing, your dinner goes cold and your bladder… well, let’s not get there.
Secondly, with the prices of widescreen monitors dropping drastically, buying one of these babies in the next few months might be a real good option. It won’t be long till 19" Widescreen monitors become standard for all PCs, and that will be the day PC gamers will reign supreme (*evil laugher*)!
Ok, before I bore you with all this mindless banter, let’s get to the point. I’ve compiled a list of 5 games that look highly orgasmic on widescreen monitors, and here they are:

World of Warcraft
All you WoW fanatics who thought the game looked great haven’t yet seen it on widescreen. The game looks absolutely phenomenal on 1680x1050 resolution, and with the digital video output that most new monitors support, the colors look crisper and more vibrant than ever. The best part is that you do not need any fixes/tweaks to get it running on any widescreen resolution, as the game has complete widescreen support. The first time I saw the way the game looked on a 22” widescreen monitor, I fell in love with the sexy piece of hardware and knew that I just had to buy it.
Oblivion
The open-endedness of Oblivion ensures that you play the game time and time again, trying a new class each time, or taking a new path. So, if you’ve played the game on a standard monitor the first time around, try playing it in widescreen. The outdoor scenes look absolutely stunning in widescreen, which allows you to enjoy more of the horizon in your viewing area. The game supports widescreen, so you don’t even have to mess around with patches to get it running.

Battlefield 2142
An Electronic Arts representative stated that there is no widescreen support in Battlefield 2142, because the widened viewing area would give widescreen gamers an advantage over others. *Sniff Sniff* Either ways, the game looks amazing once you force widescreen support. After you’ve played this game in widescreen, playing it on a standard monitor will make you feel claustrophobic, and you’re bound to try stretching the sides of your monitor physically. There is an article on Widescreengamer.com to help you force widescreen in the game, and here it is.
Flatout 2
Flatout 2 on a widescreen monitor, is the closest you can get playing Burnout: Revenge (BO: R) on the Xbox 360. If you’ve not played BO: R, let me tell you that it’s the best looking racer out there. Flatout 2 gives you similar destruction, high speeds, and some gorgeous car-crashes. The game supports widescreens right out of the box, and when you run it on widescreen you’ll know the game was meant to be played this way. The game is amazingly optimized for a wider viewing area, and I’m sure that your jaw will drop when you see it.
Every list has to have a World War II game. And following that tradition, here’s a WWII game that was made for widescreen. Day of Defeat: Source looks extremely gorgeous with the wider viewing area, and thanks to the Source engine, it doesn’t require a very powerful card to run it on even 1680x1050. If you have any other games build on the Source engine, you’ll be glad to know that there’s inbuild widescreen support for almost all of them.
