Its a Trap!
'k, I have a question, guys... How long did it take you guys to transition from pad to stick? I'm finally getting a Qanba Q4 for my birthday today. :D I've been playing at the arcade, but I've really been having trouble using the arcade stick; to be honest, it feels like it would take months for me to get as good with an arcade stick (even if I have one at home) as I am with a pad. Is it really THAT tough, or is there just an initial hump I'll have to get over?
Took me 3 months to get used to it.
Took me over a year to get as good on it as I was on pad.
Now, more than 2 years later, I feel a handicap while playing on pad, as I can't do most of my stuff.

Some people learn quicker than others. I know a few guys who became experts on stick in just a few months.

Infiltration's Gouken is probably the sickest and most fresh ones I've ever seen! Bullcat, Desora, and ProudStrawberry have some serious competition, it seems. :D Thank you for sharing that, Desolator. :)

i always played with stick but i played on different sticks, like it used to be an example that "Sahi Stick Pe Tou Sab Hi Khel Laitay Hain,Player Woh Hai Jo Kharab Stick Pe Khel Sakay Aur Jeet Sakay"
So I have played on different sticks but it used to take 2 to 3 matches to get comfortable and perform moves easily, yet you u have to learn easiest motions first and then go high towards basic combos,u may pull basic or advance combos easily now but those will not be as easy in vs battle.....i have played challenges in which i have to play with 4 buttons in Sf,but i learnt how to adjust quickly....i hope u do the same quickly....adjusting to the stick should take 1 month max and a week minimum in my opinion.

it took me about a month because i never played six button game on stick before as i start playing sf4 on pad and sf4 is my first game of the series so when i shifted to stick then it took little time and it took me month because i have different layout of buttons then default or mostly used layout ... as i use one layout for honda or blanka etc and different layout for other characters so i make slight changes in default layout to support both layouts so i can use both layout at same time without changing buttons every time ....

but when i played kof or tekken i had no problems at all .. it felt like as easy and comfortable as when i used to play in arcades ... so sf4 took little time but kof and tekken really give me good feel and confidence that i can still play on stick

Alright, thanks for the info, everyone! :D Got my Q4 yesterday, and damn, it's even more awesome than I expected! The stick and the buttons are SUPER responsive! Practiced a bit with it yesterday with SSFIV on the 360 and Alpha 3 on the PC; works like a dream. After a rigorous Training Mode session with the thing today in SSFIV, I feel like I'm getting the hang of it; I think I'll have it down in a few weeks! :D But I got my exams starting next week so I don't know how much I'll be able to play. >.>

In any case, thanks again for all the help, guys. :)

Great Choice and well coming to the first question , as to how long does it take for someone to be as comfortable on the stick as on the pad. Honestly i would not put a Time Gap on it. It varies from person to person.

Firstly you have to accept the fact that your game will nerf down alot when you shift to a FS.
Secondly you will have problems getting used to the button layout
Thirdly you will loose a volley of matches before you can be 100 % comfy on the stick.

The Third fact is the most important one cos that is a major reason for some people to give up ( Looking at Jawad).

Suggestions: Well firstly work on your basic motion movements . Since the Qanba comes with the square gate so try using different grips on the Ball top to get a commanding feeling on both sides ( Player 1 and Player 2).

Secondly most people shifting from pads have difficult in blocking , Set the dummy in training mode to do some ariel attacks and try to block em from different distances. ( Cross ups should be a major part here).

Thirdly as Zack mentioned do not go for complex combos right now. Basic Bnbs with a lot flexibility in frame are highly recommended. Keep on doing this and in training mode and in actual matches. Trust me its going to help you out in the long run.

Haha, you're exactly right, Amir bhai. I did lose a shitload at the arcade (I think my wins at the arcade barely make it to double figures, if at all, and I've played around 80-90 games!), and my game did nerf down exponentially. Didn't have much trouble with the layout though; probably cause I was playing in my head all the time thinking about playing on an arcade stick. lol I was thinking, after playing at the arcade for a while, that there was no hope for me playing with an arcade stick; but then I decided it would be for the best if I got one and worked on it.

Anyways, I'm starting to see why the Wineglass grip is the most popular one in Japan. It's so damn accurate and efficient! But it feel kinda weird it's a little comfortable. I've settled for Daigo's grip, which is apparently more commonly know as the No Homo. xD I was using the same one at the arcade; but now I can really see where I'm going wrong and how I can fix it. I'm trying to master the basic motions like 2xQCF, 2xQCB, DP, HCF, HCB, and some TK stuff from both sides. Akuma doesn't need all of that, but I think it'll help me in the longer run; and after today, I feel like I've really improved on doing the 2xQCF from the P1 side! :D Oh, and thanks for that tip on practicing blocking!! I remember that was something that really frustrated me at the arcade--didn't think of working on until now, so thanks for telling me. Haha, and yes, basic stuff and BnBs are all I'm working on for now. :) Although, with plinking, 1-frame links and such are absolutely NO PROBLEM. :D

Thanks for all your advice. :)

No Problem bro.The Wine Glass grip is probably the most accurate one right now. i tried various grips when i got the FS a year back but settled for the stick between the pinky helped me alot with accuracy and execution . Blocking is something which normally people neglect while shifting on the FS , like i did and man was i wrong or what . Another thing i would suggest is Dashing , Its a basic movement but Dashing quickly back and forth helps in applying pressure on your opponent and secondly for FADcing.

^what's the reason then? I thought his Akuma is pretty good, although it is the first time i have ever seen him play with Akuma. Hate him or love him, there is no denying that he is the most consistent Sf player ever. He has always been in the top ranking sf players.

lol, I think he was referring to how Amir bhai mentioned that he came up with a new combo as one of the reasons that he is a beast. I don't think he was trying to say "he is The Beast because of some reason" in a sarcastic way, implying that he didn't deserve the title. :p And yeah, his Akuma is good now... But DAMN, it fucking sucked ass before! Check out the matches he played in his tour of Kuwait this year with Akuma; it was almost embarrassing. lol
