[h=1]There's a Way to Update an Offline Xbox One, Here's How[/h]

Players who will be grabbing the Xbox One this Friday will be required to connect the Xbox One online to grab the day one update. Without this update, users won't be able to play games or interact with any of the console's function.

Just in case the Xbox One is unable to connect online for whatever reason, Microsoft has provided a way to grab the update and install yourself through these steps in what they call an "Emergency Offline Update." The Xbox Support page has all the details.

To manually perform the installation yourself, you'll need a USB flash drive formatted as NTFS with a minimum of 2GB of storage as well as a PC internet connection and USB port.

First, Xbox One players will need to figure out their OS version. To do so, users will need to press the Xbox button to go Home, then the Menu button to select settings, then System -> Console Info. If the console is in the middle of the update, players can pull both triggers and bumpers to find out the OS version labelled as "Build."

With the OS version on hand, users will then download one of the two files listed on the Xbox Support page. Users will then unzip the file to the root of the USB flash drive.

To prepare the installation, players will then unplug the network cable from the Xbox One if there's one connected. The Xbox One should then be powered off and unplugged. The instructions say to wait 30 seconds before putting the power cord back in. The USB flash drive should then be plugged into one of the USB ports on the Xbox One.

To start installing the update, players will need to press and hold the Bind and Eject buttons, then press the Power button. The Bind and Eject buttons should be kept held for 10-15 seconds until two "power-up" tones are heard seconds apart. The Bind and Eject buttons can then be released after the second tone. After the console restarts, users are instructed to remove the USB drive.

The update will be complete once the console restarts again.

Xbox One will launch in 13 markets on November 22.

[h=1]Microsoft Pulls Xbox One Offline Update Process[/h]

Yesterday, we posted a way to update the Xbox One offline manually using a USB drive for problematic consoles that are unable to connect online for any reason. The update was titled an "Emergency Offline Update" and has since been pulled down by Microsoft.

The process involved users copying one of two OS update files onto a 2 GB USB device, powering the console off, and booting the system holding the Bind and Eject buttons with the USB device inserted into one of the Xbox One's ports.

Microsoft has issued this statement regarding why the company has removed the Xbox Support page:

"The site was not an alternative way to take the Day One update and customers still need to connect to Xbox Live for the update. Because of the complexity of this customer support process we've actually removed the page and we will work with customers directly to make sure they have a smooth experience."

Meanwhile, on the NeoGAF forums, Microsoft's Albert Penello stated that the the Emergency Offline Update was never intended to replace the day one update.

"That file was never designed to replace the day one update," Penello wrote. "Its a recovery file in case something goes wrong. Instead of risking customers get themselves into a bad state by installing the file, we are going to troubleshoot on a case-by-case basis. It is not a replacement for the online update."

For now, everyone who is getting an Xbox One when it launches tomorrow will have to download the update straight from Xbox Live. The update will be required to download.

[h=1]Xbox One Will Support Dolby Digital Optical in Post Launch Update[/h]

The Xbox One will ship tomorrow without support for Dolby Digital through digital optical, a concern for most headset users. Currently, the next-gen console will only output stereo and DTS through its optical port. The issue here is that Dolby only headsets will have to use stereo for its sound.

Here is what Albert Penello wrote on NeoGAF, Microsoft director of product planning:

Dolby Digital is coming post launch. This was a SW scheduling issue pure and simple, and I know people are disappointed, but we will have it.
Anyone with an HDMI receiver should be fine, as we pass the uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1 through HDMI as well as DTS. Even if you have a Dolby only HDMI receiver (which I'm not sure exists), you will still get 5.1 or 7.1 sound since those receivers should accept uncompressed surround.
For the Dolby only headsets, my understanding is that these will work but you will only get stereo audio since we only pass Stereo and DTS through the optical port. I have not tested this myself, but I'm told it works. Regardless, I understand this is an inconvenience, but again we're going to have Dolby coming.
This is unrelated to the HDMI-IN "Surround Sound" beta. To clarify, we default HDMI-IN audio to be converted to Stereo. However, we do have a feature you can access in TV settings/Troubleshooting that enables Surround Sound in "beta" form. If you check the box, and you get Surround, you're golden. We found some inconsistencies in STB's during testing and decided to disable it by default to insure a good initial setup experience for people.

So Dolby Digital is not completely out of the picture. It will come eventually, just not tomorrow when the Xbox One is launched. According to Penello, HDMI receivers will be fine.

HDMI-IN, however, will only support "surround sound" in its beta form. HDMI-IN will be used to connect devices into the Xbox One like your cable or set top box. The Xbox One will default sound to stereo if the user does not opt into the beta toggle.

Astro Gaming has issued a statement regarding the Dolby Digital situation, clarifying that users with an A50 Wireless Transmitter or Wired MixAmp Pro will be able to get surround sound on day one. So good news for those people who own either of these devices. For others, you'll have to wait until Xbox One's post launch update is out.

ASTRO Gaming still provides a Dolby® Headphone 7.1 experience on the Xbox One – even from a stereo input.
Microsoft’s decision to drop Dolby® encoding on their SPDIF output at launch does have ramifications for ASTRO’s products. While our products do not process DTS signals, we do have on-board Dolby® encoding in both our A50 Wireless Transmitter as well as our Wired MixAmp™ Pro. An Xbox One gamer will need to select Stereo output for game audio, but our MixAmps will process that stereo signal with Dolby ProLogic II and encode it with Dolby® Headphone – *the* gold standard for simulated 7.1 Surround Sound for gaming headphones.
So have no fear gamers, your ASTRO’s will still provide a Dolby® Digital Surround experience no matter what your console choice.

[h=1]These Broken Xbox One Disc Drives Sound Like They're Eating Discs [Update][/h]

A small number of users are reporting some issues regarding the Xbox One disc drive. Shown in a few handful videos, problematic consoles are emitting a strange and concerning grinding noise when a disc is inserted into the Blu-ray slot.

It's not clear how many consoles have this problem and Microsoft has yet to respond to the matter. This post will be updated when new information arrives.

Update: Here's the statement Microsoft has provided to Kotaku. It doesn't really say much in importance, just that they'll be ready to help you if you need an issue to resolve.
We know that with a hardware launch of this magnitude customers will have questions and we have many avenues for customers to get the answers they need and get back in the game as soon as possible. Rest assured we plan to take care of our customers. Any customer who believes they are experiencing an issue with their Xbox One should reach out to us.
There are many avenues available for customers to get in touch with us including:
- Talking to a live customer support person that can call you back if you don't want to wait
- Xbox.com for support pages and forums
- On Twitter with xboxSupport
- There are also Help and diagnostics on the console by saying "Xbox Help"

Update 2: Microsoft has issued another statement:

"The issue is affecting a very small number of Xbox One customers. We're working directly with those affected to get a replacement console to them as soon as possible through our advance exchange program. Rest assured, we are taking care of our customers."
