Who is Afraid of UNIX:

Whenever any newbie IT person came across the word Unix / Linux, they usually think of something very obscure and complicated. Well the truth is they are not that complicated as they sound. They are OS (Operating System) just like any OS in the windows line of OS. But they are the real OS, meant to be secure, useful and perform better. Nearly all the big companies are using Unix / Linux based OS for their operations. Whether its a nuclear plant, an airline, an oil company or a big telecommunication company they all use Unix / Linux based OS. Reason is plain and simple, Unix / Linux based OS are really fast, reliable, secure and offer more functionality then their counterparts. All big servers and supercomputers run Unix / Linux based OS. The other reason for their usage is that most of the Unix / Linux flavors are available free of charge or to be exact are open source. If we carefully look around us Unix / Linux based OS are everywhere.

Using Unix / Linux based OS you can virtually do anything you like such as setting up a web server, mail server, file server, FTP server and much much more. They are choice of all ISP.

Although people usually think that Windows based OS are much better, I agree they are but for a different purpose. Windows based OS are for PC (Personal Computer), user can browse Internet, watch movies, play games and use office based applications.

WWW was also invented on Unix / Linux based OS. Also the PakGamers website is also hosted on Unix / Linux based OS.

There are thousands of open source programs you can use. See the link below
http://sourceforge.net/

One of the biggest problem with Unix / Linux based OS is that are difficult to use, as they require a different mindset. It has got a steep learning curve, but one you have mastered the basics then you will really appreciate the power and usefulness of Unix / Linux based OS.

Unix / Linux based OS are not just for servers as they can be used on PC, they offer what you expect from a PC OS.

Which Unix / Linux based OS to go for:

If you are a newbie then probably Ubuntu is the road to go. It is simple and easier to install. You can even run it directly from the CD / DVD.

Download the latest Ubuntu from here.

I agree unix is a very good system and you can do a lot of stuff. I am right using a Robotic Simulation environment on linux. The only problem i have encountered with linux is that when installing some softwares like Gazebo 3d simulator for robots you have to do a lot of work and it is not all very well documented so you usually have to spent a lot of time what to do and figuring out the solutions sometimes can take a lot of time.

Otherwise, once you get used to linux you will love it as it is stable and you can do a lot of stuff on it. It is also best for creating open source projects.

The best thing about linux is its Open Source and u can perform countless functions on it. It is the most stable Server side OS which is secure/virusfree and above all the most PowerFul platform a person rely on.

I have been learning Linux and using it since last 5 years and Alhamdulillah I have seen its users rising.

The best part of open source software is that you have access to code, so if you find any bugs in the software, you can report it or you can try to fix it yourself.
