Watchmen, the seminal graphic novel by Alan Moore, may be set for an HBO adaptation from Damon Lindelof. The Lost and The Leftovers co-creator has yet to officially sign on to the project but is a noted fan of the source material and a favorite at HBO and its Warner Bros. parent company. The adaptation is still in the early stages of development and does not yet have anyone attached to it in starring roles. Watchmen received a film adaptation in 2009 by eventual DCEU architect and Justice League director Zack Snyder. It starred Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach, Patrick Wilson as Nite Owl, Malin Akerman as Silk Spectre, Billy Crudup as Doctor Manhattan, Matthew Goode as Ozymandias, Carla Gugino as Sally Jupiter, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as The Comedian.

The film garnered mixed reviews from fans and critics alike and earned $185.3 million from its massive $130 million budget. The adaptation’s near-five hour Director’s Cut integrated such missing subplots as Tales of the Black Freighter was received more warmly when released on DVD and Blu-Ray. Warner Bros. had been considering giving the franchise another chance, this time on television, where its large scope could be given the appropriate space and platform to evolve. HBO had shown interest in the property in October of 2016. Snyder himself was set to return as a producer, but backed out of his current projects after the untimely death of his daughter.
[h=3]Related: Alan Moore is Retiring from Writing Comic Books[/h]THR first reported Lindelof’s talks with HBO. Lindelof has expressed his affection for both Snyder’s adaptation and the original Alan Moore miniseries, which he repeatedly read as a kid. He’s credited Watchmen as being a major influence on his own writing. Before the release of Snyder’s adaptation, he told CBR, “From the flashbacks to the nonlinear storytelling to the deeply flawed heroes, these are all elements that I try to put into everything I write.” Plus, he said to The Observer about Snyder’s film, “It’s the most married-to-the-original-text version of Watchmen that could’ve been made. I want to keep it sort of insular. It’s OK with me if people don’t understand it because they don’t deserve to understand it.”

Watchmen is one of the most complicated comic book texts ever released. Blending aspects of noir, science fiction, politics and social commentary, it featured a startlingly realistic plot and characters that were psychologically deep. Its popularity has not waned since it was originally released in magazine format in 1986. Collected in 1987, it has never gone out of print. Known for being a complicated, decades-spanning story, Watchmen, as with most of Moore’s work, was considered unfilmable by executives and celebrated directors like Terry Gilliam, who was once attached to direct. Lindelof’s involvement doesn’t come as much of a surprise; he has contributed to Action Comics and is a known fan of DC’s heroes. Earlier this year, his HBO series The Leftovers took its final bow to great critical acclaim. The series was complicated, esoteric and focused on existential conflicts and questions—something that would easily lend itself to an adaptation of Watchmen.
While Snyder’s adaptation was very true to the source material, it just didn’t have the space it needed to portray Watchmen in the way it was known in the comics. The series’ narrative structure lends itself more to modern episodic television than it does film and Before Watchmen, DC’s recent expansion of the franchise, provides even more material to draw from. The various miniseries expand on the origins of its main characters — Rorschach, Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, Dr. Manhattan, The Comedian, and Ozymandias — as well as the original Minuteman team. While not all of the stories were received positively, they were all financially successful.
Watchmen’s influence on the comic book medium cannot be understated. Along with Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, Moore’s series ushered in an era of more adult-oriented storytelling that has become common in the modern comic landscape. To that end, casual fans of today may not be aware of how important it is. Given that DC has made use of certain Watchmen characters as part of their Rebirth campaign, it’s not a surprise that attention on the franchise has increased. If the right person came along with the right adaptation, it could not only fill the Game of Thrones-sized hole that HBO is worried about filling, but it could introduce a new generation of fans to the series that changed comic books forever.

[h=1]HBO’s Watchmen Will Likely Stray From the Source Material[/h]

The upcoming Watchmen TV series may stray far from the source material. Last month, it was reported that LOST and The Leftovers co-creator Damon Lindelof had been hired by HBO to develop an adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ iconic 1986 limited comic book series (and later graphic novel), Watchmen. The news came almost two years after it was first reported that HBO was developing a Watchmen TV series, though all they had to say at the time was that they were in preliminary talks with creatives about the project.
Then, earlier this year, reports surfaced about Warner Bros. looking into developing an R-rated animated adaptation of the graphic novel, thus potentially indicating plans to shelve the live-action TV series. However, that didn’t seem to be the case when Lindelof reportedly boarded the TV project in June. Although, even his involvement may be in question. Yesterday, Lindelof said that he hasn’t had any meetings with HBO about Watchmen, though he said that he was interested in the project and seemed to indicate that he was at least contacted by the network about the adaptation.
[h=3]Related: Fancasting HBO’s Watchmen TV Show[/h]Lindelof’s reluctance to confirm his involvement with the Watchmen TV series makes today’s comments from HBO’s president of programming, Casey Bloys, perplexing. Bloys discussed HBO’s slate during the network’s summer TCA presentation today, and Bloys told IGN afterward that Lindelof’s Watchmen TV series may stray from the source material and even include some original plot points.
“I don’t want to talk too much about it, but Damon is thinking about it in a way exactly as you describe it. Which is, how do you take the material and derive from it a TV show, without making it a literal translation?”

Those who’ve read the Watchmen graphic novel know that the story has a definitive beginning and a definitive ending, which is why it was told as a limited series in the first place. So, translating that story into a full-fledged series (not miniseries) would, of course, require deviations from the source material. When asked about Lindelof potentially creating material specifically for the show, Bloys responded, “I think so, yes.” The HBO executive also explained that if anyone could do that, it’s Lindelof, who he had worked with while the writer was shepherding The Leftovers.
“Damon is one of the smartest, most passionate, most thorough writers I’ve ever worked with, so he’s really thinking about this in amazing ways. Again, I don’t want to talk about the details of it, but when you sit with him, and you see the way his mind works, it’s really kind of amazing.”

The last Watchmen adaptation was Zack Snyder’s 2009 film. And as with virtually every other Snyder-directed film, Watchmen split critics and audiences. However, the movie’s Ultimate Cut has since received almost universal acclaim, with other notable Hollywood directors heralding the film as a “masterwork.” Despite the movie’s extended version achieving acclaim from critics and audiences alike, Gibbons believes that the upcoming Watchmen TV series may, in fact, outshine the movie. Gibbons suggested that Watchmen works better as a TV show rather than a movie because it’s an episodic story, and episodic narratives don’t always fit within the confines of a two-to-three hour film; unless, of course, the story stretches across multiple theatrical installments.
However, it’s worth noting that Gibbons expressed his thoughts prior Bloys’ comments, so it’s possible that the acclaimed artist may not consider the new adaptation better than the movie upon seeing it. Although it sounds like HBO and Lindelof have every intention of moving forward with the Watchmen TV series, we’ll just have to wait and see if they actually follow through.

[h=1]Watchmen TV Series Pre-Production Teased by Damon Lindelof[/h]

Although it’s yet to be formally announced, Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers) has given the clearest hint yet that pre-production is actually starting on an HBO version of Watchmen. Using his Instagram account, he’s teased a single image that is instantly recognizable to fans of the original comics run, and unless it’s a cruel trick the proverbial ball has started rolling on a new series.
One of the most influential comic titles ever, Watchmen can take credit for its part in changing attitude to graphic novels and comics as a whole. Written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons in 1986, it incisively provided social commentary on the nature of superheroes themselves, while providing a gripping story. After several failed attempts, Zack Snyder directed the movie version in 2009, which did get a mixed reception but had stunning opening credits and was fairly faithful to the comics in looks and content. However earlier this year it was reported that Lindelof was in talks with HBO to develop a new interpretation of the dysfunctional heroes as a mini-series.

Nothing more has been released since then regarding the project, with Lindelof even going as far as downplaying his involvement with it. But that all changed today, when he posted this image on his Instagram account:

Day One.
A post shared by Damon (@damonlindelof) on Sep 19, 2017 at 10:49am PDT

The photo is obviously referring to the statue of the first Nite Owl, which featured heavily on the cover of issue #8 of the first run of Watchmen. It also played a major part in the storyline itself when it was used as a murder weapon. Nite Owl operated as part of the “Minutemen” in the 1930s, and had the identity of policeman Hollis Mason in his civilian life. In later years he inspired Daniel Dreiberg to take up the cowl and become the second person to adopt that superhero mantle in an attempt to honor his crime fighting achievements. The statue itself – which is somewhat more polished in the comics version – was given to Mason in recognition of his time in costume. Cleverly it can also be read as “Ingratitude,” which reflects society’s attitude towards the later generation of superheroes. It’s been suggested that this may be the same prop as used in Snyder’s original movie version, but there’s no way to confirm that.
Either this is a very clear indication that the production of HBO’s Watchmen is underway, or Lindelof is just needlessly trolling the fans. There really doesn’t seem to be any other reason for posting it, so it seems safe to assume that the series is underway and we can probably expect an announcement shortly. With regard to the project itself, most people think that Lindelof is a good choice for showrunner, with even the original artist Gibbons giving a TV version the vote of confidence.
The resources of HBO is likely to be a good fit as well, although indications suggest that the series may well stray from the original source material. But that certainly worked for Westworld. So we remain optimistic about this new version of Watchmen and hopefully look forward to seeing more information shortly.

[h=1]HBO Officially Orders Watchmen TV Series Pilot[/h]

HBO is officially moving forward with their adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ classic graphic novel Watchmen, with Lost and The Leftovers showrunner Damon Lindelof at the helm of the series pilot.
The seminal graphic novel is set in an alternate reality where the presence of superheroes swung the outcome of the Vietnam War. Watchmen was a dark, revolutionary deconstruction of superhero stories, showcasing deeply flawed heroes grappling with their personal demons and the escalation of the Cold War.
[h=4]HBO has been attempting to adapt the story into an ongoing series for a few years now, and it looks like they may have finally cracked the code. Per Variety, the network is officially ordering a Watchmen pilot, as well as additional scripts should the pilot be ordered to series.[/h]

As has been rumored for awhile now, writer/producer Damon Lindelof will mastermind the Watchmen adaptation. Lindelof is no stranger to beloved franchises, having worked on Star Trek Into Darkness and Prometheus after wrapping up his work on Lost. Lindelof recently voiced his love for the source material, but wanted to make sure he could do it justice before committing to the project. He seemingly feels confident in his ability to deliver at this point. His previous series, The Leftovers, recently wrapped a three-season run on HBO that was never a ratings champion, but was among the most critically acclaimed shows on television, telling a complex, sorrowful, supernatural flavored story. In retrospect, The Leftovers seems like the perfect warm up act for taking on Moore’s dark superhero opus.

This is, of course, not the first time Watchmen has gotten a live action adaptation. Justice League director Zack Snyder famously helmed a big screen iteration of the graphic novel. That film featured stunning visuals and a slavish dedication to painstakingly recreating scenes from the source material. While it has gained something of a cult following – especially its expanded Blu-ray cut – the film was critically divisive and only a modest box office success.
Lindelof’s adaptation will likely have to take much bigger liberties with the source material than Snyder’s film, as a straight retelling of the graphic novel would seem limited in an ongoing television series. It’s possible Lindelof could take a cue from The Leftovers, which was also adapted from a critically acclaimed book; that series told the full story of the source material in its first season, then went on to tell new stories and expand the characters and their world in subsequent outings.
Whatever option Lindelof takes, a Watchmen TV series will be a massive undertaking with huge expectations, and is likely being eyed as a major player for post-Game of Thrones HBO. If anyone can pull it off, it’s Lindelof.

Yeah, I understand that, there wasn't much closure on the whole mysteries in The Leftovers.

But going in from the start it was easy to see that giving answers was not the show's intent (false prophets, contradictory explanations, etc). It was aping the feeling keh world doesn't owe you any answers, you don't necessarily get closure always.

Each and every character in that show was trying to find the reason or meaning for Sudden Departure (the most relatable, human thing ever: we all want reasons and answers for what happens to us), but sometimes there are no answers, shit happens, and all that matters is how you cope with it. I loved that show for this reason. And I can fully understand why someone might be underwhelmed for this exact reason.

[h=1]Damon Lindelof Adapting Watchmen Because ‘We Need Dangerous Shows’[/h]

Damon Lindelof revealed his motives for making the new TV adaptation of Watchmen. The creator of Lost and The Leftovers wants to honor its writer, and he thinks that we need more “dangerous shows.” He also wants to make it very clear that we shouldn’t trust people who wear masks.
It was back in June of this year when it was first announced that Lindelof was working with HBO to develop a TV version of the seminal Alan Moore graphic novel. This was followed a few months later by the official Watchmen pilot order by the network, as the pre-production work started in earnest. With the MCU and DCEU now such an integral part of film release schedules each year, this was a project that HBO had been trying to get off the ground for some time. The source material is very much a dark take on superheroes, with characters weaving in and out of global conspiracies and conflicts, and it seemed to be ideal material for Lindelof. In fact, he has been very vocal about his love of the book and considers himself a “superhero junkie” to some extent.

This was backed up when the showrunner spoke at a recent live event for Vulture. Speaking to Mike Schur (The Good Place), he told an audience why he was drawn to the project. He considers the story to be a very real and mature take on the genre, and wants to make a show that will reflect that and subvert some of the current comic book tropes, as he said:
“Watchmen – it was dangerous. And you can’t be dangerous for dangerous’ sake, but the reason that I’m doing this is these are dangerous times, and we need dangerous shows. … What we think about superheroes is wrong. I love the Marvel movies and we saw Justice League this morning and I’m all for Wonder Woman and Batman and I grew up on these characters, but we should not trust people who put on masks and say that they are looking out for us. If you hide your face, you are up to no good.”

Aside from his real-world concern about masked individuals, Lindelof also stated some further reasons for his deep commitment to the show. He has apparently spoken directly to Moore, who characteristically wants nothing to do with the production. However, Lindelof refers to him as “the greatest writer in the history of comics” and wants to make the show in a way that will honor the writer, believing his work to be greatly ahead of its time. Touchingly, the TV producer also wants to pay homage to his father, who instilled the love for comic books into him. This leads to one final motive for making the HBO show:
“For a superhero junkie, I’ve never done a superhero movie or a superhero TV show, and now is the time.”
Most fans have approved of the appointment of Lindelof to develop this new take on these iconic characters from the comics. The work on his previous TV shows, and his obvious affection for the material, should make for a very effective partnership with HBO once the project starts shooting. It will be interesting to see to how it matches with Zack Snyder’s 2009 film version, and just how close it will adhere to the original storyline, as rumors suggest Lindelof’s Watchmen may stray from certain plot points. There is no screening date or casting news yet on Watchmen, but hopefully the show will succeed in bringing Doctor Manhattan and co. to the small screen in the best way possible.

[h=1]Is John Cena Teasing A Role in HBO’s Watchmen Series?[/h]

WWE star John Cena has shared a pair of Instagram posts featuring imagery related to the Watchmen graphic novel, leading some to believe he may be teasing a role on Damon Lindelof’s adaptation of the book for HBO.
The wrestler has acted in a variety of movies over the past few years, including Trainwreck and Sisters, both in 2015; he’s next voicing the title role in upcoming animated film Ferdinand. On the TV side of things, he hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live in 2016, but has largely stuck to talk and reality shows, like NBC’s Today, and Fox’s American Grit, the latter of which he has hosted two seasons. But now, if a far-fetched rumor is to be believed, Cena may have a big role on what’s sure to be a big show: Lindelof’s Watchmen TV series set at HBO.
Related: Fancasting the Characters of HBO’s Watchmen TV Show
Cena has shared two images on Instagram (h/t CBR): one of the Comedian’s badge, practically Watchmen‘s logo, and another of fan art depicting Dr. Manhattan, one of the graphic novel’s protagonists. CBR points out that Cena curates a relatively eccentric Instagram gallery of unrelated images, so his nods to Watchmen could simply be the random posts of a fan. But some see potential for surprise in the fact that Cena posted not one, but two Watchmen-related graphics.

A post shared by John Cena (@johncena) on Nov 19, 2017 at 7:27am PST

News of Lindelof’s adaptation of Watchmen for HBO first broke in June. More recently, the showrunner – who has long praised the virtues of the graphic novel, as well as its influence on his work – explained that Watchmen could fill what he perceives to be the need for “dangerous shows.” Among other works, Lindelof is responsible for Lost and The Leftovers, both of which which he co-created. Watchmen will mark Lindelof’s return to HBO after The Leftovers.
At this point, the possibility of Cena playing Dr. Manhattan seems extremely remote. He’s demonstrated respectable acting chops in the realm of comedy, but a role like Dr. Manhattan — in a show like an HBO imagining of Watchmen — would be an entirely different beast. The Leftovers was a mesmerizing piece of TV, compelling in its personal drama, its fantasy, and its existential questions. Watchmen, in turn, is a property rife with profound potential. The book is consistently hailed as a pinnacle not only of the graphic novel medium, but of literature more broadly. So while it can be fun to imagine Cena enveloped in blue CGI, it would be wise to temper expectations. Nothing’s impossible, but this is close to it.

Watchmen does not yet have a premiere date.

[h=1]Watchmen TV Show Casts Regina King, Louis Gossett Jr. & More[/h]

HBO has announced no less than six cast members for Damon Lindelof's Watchmen comic book TV series pilot. In the years since Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons released their landmark Watchmen comics, the property has gotten both a prequel comic book miniseries (Before Watchmen) and a sequel comic series (Doomsday Clock), neither of which involved Moore or Gibbons. Watchmen was also adapted for the big screen in 2009 under Zack Snyder's direction, and is now making its way to the small screen as a live-action show for the first time now.
Lindelof, who previously co-created The Leftovers for HBO, only just posted a five-page statement to social media, claiming that Watchmen is a 'remix' of the property that will neither reboot nor reproduce the events of Moore and Gibbons' comic book story. It's not clear yet how many of the characters that survived the original Watchmen comic book saga will return in the TV show either, with Lindelof teasing that there will be several "New faces [and] new masks to cover them" on the series. However, we do now know at least some of the actors that will be appearing in the small screen iteration of Watchmen.

According to
Variety, Regina King is playing a lead role in Watchmen and will share the screen with seasoned TV veterans Don Johnson and Louis Gossett Jr. (the original Miami Vice and Roots, respectively). The Watchmen TV show pilot will further include Adelaide Clemens (Rectify) and Andrew Howard (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Hell on Wheels), as well as the ever prolific movie and TV character actor Tim Blake Nelson (famous for his roles in films like O'Brother, Where Art Thou?). Based on a previously-released Watchmen casting breakdown, King is almost certainly playing Angela Abraham, an "independent and intelligent [cop who's] also a realist".

It appears the Watchmen TV show will take place in the present, albeit the present-day version of the alternate universe in Moore and Gibbons' original comics. In that world, the U.S. actually won the Vietnam War thanks to the involvement of costumed superheroes - especially that of Jon Osterman aka. Dr. Manhattan, a being with god-like powers and an allergy to clothes - and Richard Nixon was still the country's president well into the 1980s. Lindelof has confirmed that Moore and Gibbons' original twelve issues of Watchmen are canon to the show, meaning the series will (presumably) examine what happened in the aftermath of Adrian Veidt aka. Ozymandias' horrific attempt to bring about world peace through the slaughter of millions.

As polarizing as Lindelof's work can be (in particular his Prometheus movie script and LOSTTV show finale), many critics seem to agree that
The Leftovers represents his most compelling offering yet. The series cut deep and dark with its exploration of mass trauma, as well as the struggle between religion and faith versus science and rationalism. TheWatchmen comics have long wrestled with similar topics and controversial issues, which suggests that Lindelof may yet well prove to be the right person to 'remix' the property for cable TV. And with an already great cast in place, he's certainly gotten started on the right foot here.

[h=1]HBO’s Watchmen TV Series Casts Jeremy Irons In A Lead Role[/h]

HBO’s upcoming Watchmen series from Damon Lindelof adds yet another recognizable face to its cast by bringing on Jeremy Irons in what is being described as a lead role. So far, the series counts Louis Gossett Jr., Regina King, Don Johnson, and Tim Blake Nelson among its stars, though which character each actor is playing is so far unconfirmed, despite a presumed casting breakdown having leaked.
The question of who these characters are and how they fit into the Watchmen universe is one of the biggest regarding the new show and Lindelof’s plans for it. As explained by his extensive and very Lindelof-like online statement, the series isn’t another adaptation of the 12-issue comic series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, but rather something else. For one thing, the series apparently takes place in the present day of the alternate universe thatWatchmen existed in, which could have some interesting ramifications for the series’ storyline, depending on how it plans to incorporate not only the themes explored by Moore’s work, but also some of the major twists and turns seen in the original story.

That makes the casting of Irons, which was first reported by
Deadline, all the more interesting. Like Gossett Jr. and Johnson, Irons is of a certain age, which lines up with some of the details seen in the casting breakdown. Of the possible characters mentioned, there’s “Red Scare,” who is a Russian mafioso with an affinity for track suits, and “Old Man,” a character who is described as “a former cop who is still an imposing figure despite his age.”Though it’s far from certain that Irons is playing either one of these characters, or that the casting call is in fact legitimate, Irons recently did his best Russian accent in Red Sparrow, and he could easily play a retired cop with a penchant for intimidating people, badge or no badge.

Regardless of who Irons is playing, his presence brings additional star power to an impressive cast. Though he’s been involved in critically maligned films like Batman V Superman and Justice League, as well as the video game adaptation Assassin’s Creed, opposite Michael Fassbender, he’s also been seen in the likes of Ben Wheatley’s High Riseand The Man Who Knew Infinity. Moreover, Watchmen will be a return to television for the Academy Award winning actor, whose last series role was as Rodrigo Borgia on Showtime’s papal drama, The Borgias.

Although there is still a great deal of mystery surrounding the series, there’s no real indication that Lindelof’s Watchmen is intended to be another puzzle box show, a laWestworld or his own television phenomenon, Lost. At this point, it doesn’t really matter, as the series seems like an engaging confluence of material, creator (especially coming off The Leftovers), and cast that should, at the very least, produce some interesting results.

[h=1]HBO’s Watchmen TV Show Casts Sleepy Hollow’s Tom Mison & More[/h]

Sleepy Hollow star Tom Mison and two others have joined HBO's Watchmen as another round of mysterious roles have been added to the comic book TV show. The cast is coming together for Damon Lindelof's reimagining of Watchmen, though very few details have actually been revealed. Lindelof claims the Watchmen series will reinvent the comic, so the idea of using the source material to guess what the show could be about went out the window. But while the minds behind the show have offered virtually no concrete information, some set photos have teased the updated world.
Taking place in the same universe as the original comic (and the film adaptation), Watchmen explores the fallout of the familiar events as superheroes have become fugitives in world reeling from Ozymandias' attack. In fact, Ozymandias is dead in Watchmen, the first hint that the original characters may not be involved in the show. The series will still benefit from a large and prestigious ensemble, however, and a new trio of actors have joined the production.

Deadline is reporting that Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow) has joined HBO's Watchmen. After four seasons starring in the supernatural FOX series, Mison will now jump to an even more high-profile genre show. He'll be joined by Frances Fisher (Titanic) and Jacob Ming-Trent (Superfly), but sadly no additional details were revealed.

Fisher has had a long career, though she's likely best known for playing Rose's mother in Titanic. She's no stranger to TV, however, with roles on Masters of Sex and Fargopreparing her for what could be another prestige series. Ming-Trent, meanwhile, is currently in another reboot, appearing in Sony's Superfly remake. Incidentally, that film was penned by Alex Tse, the writer of the original Watchmen movie.
The three new actors join a host of big names coming to the series. The initial casting announcement for Watchmen included Louis Gossett, Jr. and Regina King. Thanks to set photos of Don Johnson in Watchmen, it's clear the former Miami Vice star will be involved as some sort of police commander. The set photos seen so far, along with the age of many of the cast, has provided some of the only clues about the series. The show definitely takes place following the original story and the comic's focus on heroes and villains past their prime seems to still be a focus.
The latest casting news comes just days after Jeremy Irons joined Watchmen in yet another unnamed role. That puts the DCEU actor in yet another DC Comics adaptation, and is perhaps the biggest name so far to come aboard the series. Hopefully, San Diego Comic-Con next month will reveal some more details about the show.

[h=1]HBO's Watchmen Casts Aquaman Villain Yahya Abdul-Mateen II[/h]

It would seem working for Warner Bros. on one of its DC Universe films is just one of the ways to land a spot on HBO’s Watchmen series, as Aquaman actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is the latest actor to join the ever-expanding cast. Damon Lindelof’s ambitious new series is beginning production on the pilot episode and has added a number of new faces to the already impressive cast. Recent additions include Academy Award winner (and current Alfred Pennyworth) Jeremy Irons, as well as former Sleepy Hollow star Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, and Jacob Ming-Trent. Those actors are set to join the likes of Regina King, Don Johnson, Louis Gossett Jr., and Tim Blake Nelson.
This most recent round of casting not only welcomes Abudul-Mateen, but also Sara Vickers (The Crown, The Alienist). As has been the case with each casting announcement there’s no word on the characters either Abdul-Mateen or Vickers will play, and the size of the cast has already eclipsed the character descriptions seen on the supposed leaked call sheet. As far as what Lindelof ultimately has planned for the series, outside of what information he’s already divulged, and how this increasingly sizable cast will fit into those plans, it would seen fans are entering into uncharted territory now. But since the project doesn’t seem to have any trouble attracting this level of talent, perhaps it can be assumed that those who are more in the know are sufficiently impressed with what they’ve seen.

The news of Abdul-Mateen and Vickers’ casting was reported by
The Wrap. Unlike Irons’“lead” role, the news didn’t mention what purpose either would serve in the series, so it’s difficult to say whether or not the new roles will function more in a supporting capacity or something more significant. With Abdul-Mateen’s profile poised to be on the rise following the release of James Wan’s Aquaman — or even its first trailer, which is expected to drop this summer — it wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility that he’ll be taking a prominent position in the pilot and series, should it be picked up by HBO.

To date, Abdul-Mateen’s biggest roles have been as Cadillac in Baz Luhrmann’s expensive birth of hip-hop Netflix series, The Get Down, and as Sgt. Ellerbee in the ill-fated Baywatchreboot starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. He’s also had roles in season 2 of Hulu’sThe Handmaid’s Tale and can be seen again in the upcoming dramedy Boundaries, with Vera Farmiga and Christopher Plummer. But it’s his role as DC Comics villain Black Manta that will likely put him on the radar of most audiences.

This latest round of casting for Watchmen has been a boon for the potential new series, as it’s garnered Lindelof’s latest television endeavor plenty of press without having to offer up any additional details or explanations as to what it is and why it’s not another direct adaptation of the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. There’s only so much interest a series of casting announcements can make, though, so it will be interesting to see what sort of details come out of the production and how audiences respond.

[h=1]Watchmen Ordered to Series at HBO; Premieres in 2019[/h]

HBO officially picks up Watchmen for a full series order and it'll premiere next year. With the popularity of comic book based properties at an all-time high, every media outlet is trying to get involved. Disney's got the MCU, Warner Bros. is developing multiple DC related projects, and Sony is looking to get a Spider-Verse going. On the small screen, Netflix, Hulu, and more have become involved, but one of television's most popular channels, HBO, has yet to get involved. That is, until they ordered a pilot for a Watchmen TV series from Damon Lindelof.
The series has already filmed the pilot, leaving the future up to whether or not HBO would move forward with an entire series order. Alan Moore's graphic novel is highly regarded as one of the best ever made, but Lindelof is going in a different direction. While Zack Snyder largely adapted the novel for his 2009 big budget movie, the HBO series will dive into new territory - and HBO is officially moving forward with it.

HBO has given a full series order to Lindelof's Watchmen. The announcement comes shortly after the programming chief of HBO heavily teased this announcement was coming, but now its official. The series is going to move ahead quickly as the network already confirmed a 2019 premiere for the DC adaptation. In addition to the series being picked up, they also revealed the first art for the series, using one Dr. Manhattan's famous quotes to tease the continuation of this story.

Interest in the HBO series has been extremely high due to Lindelof's involvement due to his work on Lost and more recently with The Leftovers. It was always a bit unlikely that HBO wouldn't move forward with the show, but the full series pick up now should be a vote of confidence in the pilot. The first episode is directed by Nicole Kassell, who has worked with Lindelof before on The Leftovers, but she's also directed episodes of Castle Rock, Westworld, and The Americans to name a few.

The official logline for the series reads: "Set in an alternate history where 'superheroes' are treated as outlaws, WATCHMEN embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own." While the actual story that the series will tell remains a mystery, it is being led by a great ensemble cast. Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, and
Aquaman's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II are some of the show's many stars. More details are sure to come now that the series has been picked up by HBO, but that information could still be months away.

Watchmen will premiere on HBO in 2019.

[h=1]Watchmen TV Show: Jeremy Irons' Role Reportedly Revealed As Ozymandias[/h]

Jeremy Irons is reportedly playing an older version of Ozymandias in the forthcomingWatchmen television series. Originally a comic book by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, Watchmen was adapted for the big screen in 2009 by Zack Snyder. The story tells a dark and bloody tale of a group of retired superheroes who are drawn back into the spotlight after the death of a former colleague and last year, aWatchmen TV series was announced with Damon Lindelof acting as showrunner. Lindelof has since confirmed that the new project will be neither an adaptation of the source material, nor a direct sequel to the movie.
Several names have been cast in as-yet-unknown roles including Don Johnson, Regina King and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, but perhaps the most recognizable among the new Watchmen team thus far is veteran actor, Jeremy Irons. Following Irons' casting earlier this year, there was widespread speculation that he was set to play anolder version of Ozymandias. In the comics and 2009 movie, Ozymandias, Adrian to his friends, is a genius, businessman and formidable fighter who was a member of the Watchmen team. Ultimately, he concocts a plan to unite mankind in peaceful harmony by staging an alien invasion and killing many innocents in the process. Thanos would be proud.

It is now being reported by SlashFilm that Irons is confirmed as playing an older Ozymandias in the upcoming Watchmen series. This report follows the previous speculation that was based on Irons' character's codename - The Blond Man - and his character description, which read:
"An aging imperious Lord...highly intelligent and won't let you forget it.... used to being obeyed and always correct. Arrogant, erudite and patrician. Physically fit, he's never missed a workout in his life."

While official confirmation on Irons' role - or indeed that of any of the cast - is still awaited from HBO, many would likely consider the actor a perfect fit for Ozymandias. In movies such as Justice League, Die Hard With A Vengeance and The Lion King, Irons has demonstrated an uncanny ability to portray characters with an intelligent aloofness and an air of superiority over others - traits synonymous with theWatchmen villain. The actor is also no stranger to playing the bad guy.

If Irons is indeed playing the supervillain formerly known as Adrian Veidt, this would give some idea as to the setting of the new Watchmen series - several decades ahead of the comic and movie. This corroborates previous reports that the series would take place roughly 30 years on from the previous story. However, set photos have suggested that, in the new TV series, Ozymandias is recently deceased. While this could have been a ruse to mislead viewers, it may also suggest that either Irons will only be seen in flashbacks or that his character has, in true supervillain style, faked his own death.
A potential return for Ozymandias also opens up the possibility of other familiar faces making an appearance. Characters such as Daniel Dreiberg (Nite Owl II) and Laurie Jupiter (Silk Specter II), as well as the presumably immortal Manhattan, were still alive at the end of the Watchmen story and could certainly make a return if Ozymandias is cooking up another evil scheme. The already-announced Don Johnson and Frances Fisher would certainly suit those first two roles nicely. Interestingly, Tim Blake Nelson has also been cast in the series and the actor bears more than a passing resemblance to the Rorschach character, although quite how he could return from utter disintegration remains to be seen.

Watchmen is set to premiere in 2019 on HBO.
