At just 10cm x 7.2cm, the Pico-ITX is half the size of the Nano-ITX, which Via introduced previously. Not surprisingly, both categories of motherboard re being targeted at small-form-factor PCs, embedded PCs, and other applications where space is critical.
Via said that the first commercial Pico-ITX motherboard would be announced "shortly".
The Pico-ITX was designed with Via's C7 processor in mind, which has been tuned for low power. The boards have previously been shown off at CeBIT and the Embedded Systems Conference.
"The Pico-ITX represents VIA's commitment to spearhead x86 innovation through our proven technology leadership in driving down the platform size," said Richard Brown, vice president of corporate marketing at Via, in a statement. "As with the Mini-ITX and Nano-ITX form factors before it, this new platform has raised the excitement level among enthusiasts and customers alike, firing the imagination an almost unlimited range of what were previously impossibly small systems."
