Both. Especially over 2.4 GHz. In fact when the TW guys who installed my connection came to test it, they were only getting like 25 Mbps down (on a 70 Mbps connection), so I said it's cause of the WiFi, I connected an ethernet cable and got a full 70 over a wired connection, so they left. I disabled the ONT WiFi and use my own router instead.

Signal strength is garbage cause it has small 2 or 3 dBi internal antennas.
I see. Well the router I have only has 300Mbps on 2.4Ghz. Would it suffice, or would i need to switch to a better router. I'd mostly be using it wirelessly as I only have a laptop and few mobile devices that will use it at home.

On a 20 Mbps connection, throughput doesn't really matter, even old routers can give you 20 easily, so both the router and ONT will be able to provide full speed.

For range however, you'd be better off with your TPLink router so might as well continue using that.

Yes. Transworld and OmanTel have issues during peak hours, ping goes up considerably, usually by 50+ ms.

I'm actually ok with the ping but the packetloss and ping variation just kills it for me constantly 50-200 and shittons of packetloss forces me towards Netflix for a while.

It's annoying, but because of this I've started playing video games during the day when the ping is perfect and I just end up watching YouTube or movies at night so I'm not really affected by the ping spikes or packet loss.

Does this phrase sound familiar: "when it works, it works perfectly, but when there's an issue, you can scratch your head and pull your hair off, and it won't get fixed".

I've always seen this ping issue with TW1 since... since a very, very long time. It's usually the evening/night hours which are problematic for some hours, and then it returns back to normal. Not sure why it happens.

the route that goes straight to europe is fine , well it was fine til nayatel was providing it now they are only giving transworlds omantel route which since the start of when they connected directly to i3d had problems at peak hours , im pretty sure from time to time especially on weekend nights its a mess for a few hours then it goes back to normal

I'm having a strange problem with both steam & origin. Even though, pretty much everything is perfectly fine, I can't seem to get anywhere near to even 100KB/s, let alone full 20Mbps bandwidth. Any ideas?

Could be an issue along the specific route, which can perhaps only be avoided by accessing another IP which takes you on another route.

CDNs are good for this, sometimes. Unless the IP is universal, it could help by switching DNS servers.

If there's an undersea cable cut, both PTCL and TW will not be able to use another route (PTCL has more undersea cables connected, and more bandwidth).

That's the issue with tier 1 ISPs.

Tier 2 ISPs (the ones we pay to) can switch routes easily.

But - tier 1 ISPs will remain competitive. PTCL has more redundancy than TW in case a cable breaks, and ISPs can switch between the two easily should the need arise.

I can't take the decision for you (besides, I don't live in Karachi) but you ought to know the limitations of TW (or PTCL) as an ISP.

Tier 1 ISPs may also be a bit better since you're not going through as many jumps and hoops to your website as you would with a tier 2 ISP.

I'm neither on PTCL nor Transworld ATM. I'm using National Broadband, but for the past 3 weeks I've been experiencing dramatic drops (only getting 25% of the bandwidth I'm paying for) in speeds from around 10 PM which is unacceptable to me since that's the only time I'm home and all the matches etc I stream come on after that. A friend of mine said to go for Storm instead since TES have lost their quite lauded quality in customer support department. I'd appreciate if someone would be able to give some insight into the consistency and quality of both the service and customer support. Thanks

@shaheerk sorry if I'm being thick, but I can't tell if you're leaning more towards tier 2 or tier 1 ISP. Also doesn't Storm get its bandwidth exclusively from TES?

Using Origin in R&D mode solved similar issue for me a few months back, on PTCL.

Assalam alikum,
I need guidance in choosing the best broadband service in karachi, i am residing in gulshan e iqbal block 14 so have limited fiberoptic options. It is either Ptcl Gpon or connect.
If anyone know about anyother network the info would be greatly appreciated.
I am interested in GPon but have my reservation with ptcl due to last horrible experience of no connectivity, slow speed and finally when i went for disconnection they lingered on the process for 5 to 6 months.
Awaiting for some guidance , thank you in advance .

If you're not into gaming, then get PTCL GPON, it's great for downloading and general internet usage.

I'm using Google's DNS coupled with Cloud Flare's, though Google's DNS latency is twice as low as cloudflare's (35-37 vs 90-98)

The problem fixed on its own. Now i'm getting full speed on steam (Y)
