Here's an interesting stat which I think everyone skipped: Zong is now the second largest operator in Pakistan, beating Telenor (who has been losing customers in the past several months). Jazz has also been losing customers.

The biggest gainer is Zong, followed by Ufone.

Here's a crap graph I made from the data to show the trend of Jazz and Telenor, and Ufone and Zong:

And this is the subscriber count (and where it's switched over for Zong and Telenor):

And if Ufone and Telenor were to merge, their combined subscriber count would be:

... putting Zong back to third place again lol.

Two carriers with barely functioning VoLTE are merging....

I wonder how Ufone will utilise Telenor's Band 5 spectrum, considering B3+B8+B1 CA will be possible, but B5 is a weird and uncommon band so I don't see how it'll fit in with the rest of the network.

Telenor already carrier aggregation B3+B5

I was also wondering about band 5. I think Ufone will go with 20+10+10 combination in B3+B1+B8. As far as B5 is concerned they will use it for 3G and 2G as long as these 2 technologies exist in Pakistan. And won't renew this band in 2031.

Only 3G will be possible as most feature phones don't support 2G on 850 MHz. What an unfortunate waste of spectrum though.

They could also do B3+B5+B1 combo and use B8 for 2G/3G in areas where it is still required.

I dont think so. Band 8 or 9 used on combonations for deeper signal penetrations in buildings and basements. At those places only one low frequency works instead of full combination. And most devices doesn't support band 8.
Telenor's downfall started when they only opted for 5 MHz 3G and no 4G in 2014 auction. And last nail in coffin was going for band expensive band 5 spectrum against $395 million. Their target customers living in rural areas doesn't had devices at that time which supported 850 Mhz 4G. So they failed to capitalise $395 million investment.

And even then, no one knows which brand will survive.

We know Etisalat is going to be the parent company (because it's an acquisition, not an acqui-merger) but we don't know whether Ufone will survive, or Telenor will license its name to Etisalat, or what.

It is 99% confirm that Telenor name will die once merger will complete. It will be interesting to see if PTCL keep merger co. name as Ufone or give it a new name like Veon did to Jazz. For me I think Ufone name will survive at the end
.
Update
.
PTCL cheif also hinted the same

Whatever the name is if they provide better services like call quality and data coverage who cares what the name is, if their services remain shitty as of now then they can name it UTI imo.

Service will definitely improve because they will use 40 MHz spectrum for 4G which is more than Jazz and Zong currently. Telenor was only lacking behind due to spectrum congestion and investment. Merged company is definitely going to be named as Ufone and it will also benefit Telenor customers.

Ufone should replace 850MHz band with 2100MHz from (FAB ) frequency Allocation Board of Pakistan .then ufone will be king of this battle....then
B1 will 20MHz bandwidth with 2100 MHz frequency
+
B3 will 23.4 MHz bandwidth with 1800 MHz frequency
+
B8 will 12 MHz bandwidth with 900 MHz frequency
Total 55 MHz bandwidth will best for beat jazz and zong
