Hey guys,

We're thinking of installing a 5kW solar hybrid system with net metering from IESCO. Has anyone here implemented such a setup? or a one without net metering? If yes, can you give some specifics of the system? The inverter installed, type of panels, wiring, batteries and the costs etc?

Lets discuss!!

Its a great idea. what happens is that you install a solar power system and generate your own electricity. let say you generate more than you can use then the extra energy will act as your credit. Sometimes ppl generate through solar in daytime and through wind at night time.

As for the setup... there will be solar panels then battery, some sort of controller and a breaker for isolation... basic things

Dc loads are fed directly from the battery and AC loads are fed through an inverter. A solar panel is only about 30 percent efficient which means it only converts 30 percent of sun's energy into usable power so the panel specs will depend upon how much energy you want to generate of what you load/demand is. a 5kW is normally what power companies alot to a single dwelling so they will size everything accordingly.

If you happen to live in an area with less loadshedding, can do without costly power bank (batteries) and spend the amount on increased solar generation capacity.

I just read that a good 5kW can generate 22 units a day. 600+ units a month's credit does not sound bad for summer heat days, if possible.

Certainly interesting!

IESCO's site mentions 1KW -1000KW

That's the plan. Most of the times actual consumption will be less than production. Instead of excessive production going to waste, one can further save by giving back into the grid for even more savings.

Yup, that's why we're not looking to get 2V cells to make up a 48V battery bank. Building this battery bank is quite costly so instead we'll make do with 4x batteries.

Do keep us updated about the progress. :)

I have a solar setup at home for a couple of years now. How can one apply for net metering? Im in Lahore Cantt btw.
IESCO is the only Distribution Company offering net metering facility as far as I know. You can check with LESCO and ask if they support net metering.

LESCO has started offering net-metering now as well I think. Also, if you can give details about your solar setup, thanks.

It's around 1.5KW, 48V setup (4x 12V 200Ah batts in series currently), 5KVA MPPT Solar Hybrid inverter (don't remember the manufacturer and model). This setup was installed in mid 2012, I think. You can probably get a 4-5Kw setup easily nowadays with the amount we spent on our setup back in the day.
Regarding batteries, if you want to get wet ones then I'd suggest AGS only. Also, please check the market prices for some good Dry batteries. They'll save you a lot of headache.

I see. As far as batteries are concerned, we'll most probably get 4x Narada batteries.

p.s how has the maintainence been? and have you guys calculated the amount of savings that you've made? Has the system paid for its cost already in savings?

You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
