The first Star Wars movie to hit theaters following The Rise of Skywalker will be from David Benioff & D.B. Weiss' series. This December, the Skywalker saga comes to a close with J.J. Abrams' Episode IX, but Lucasfilm is not stopping there. They are currently working on two separate series; the aforementioned Benioff & Weiss project and another trilogy from Rian Johnson. Last week, the future of the galaxy far, far away started to come into focus when Disney scheduled three new Star Wars movies for December 2022, 2024, and 2026.
Since there were only three dates announced, it raised questions as to which movies would be coming out when. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy saidJohnson is working closely with Benioff & Weiss while plotting the next decade of Star Wars content, but never stated which series would come out of the gates first. Now, that mystery has been solved.

In a Twitter Q&A session with Attractions Magazine, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that the first post-Episode IX Star Wars movie will come from Benioff & Weiss. Check out their post in the space below:

Iger remained mum on the Star Wars movies planned for 2024 and 2026, so it's still anyone's best guess as to what those are. Theoretically, those slots could be set aside for two more films in the Benioff & Weiss series, or Lucasfilm is going to alternate between Benioff & Weiss and Johnson. They're obviously still in the earliest days of ironing things out, and more details will be shared when the studio is ready. Earlier this year, rumors suggested Benioff & Weiss would be tackling the Old Republic era with their movies (a time period fans have been eager to see onscreen), but that isn't official yet. Ideally, viewers will learn what's coming up during Star Wars Celebration 2020, which takes place in Anaheim. That seems like a good venue to build hype for the next era of Star Wars films.

Following
The Last Jedi's polarizing debates, the Johnson Trilogy became a controversial topic amongst the Star Wars fan base, and now Benioff & Weiss find themselves in hot water as well. The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones has proven to be divisive, with the most recent episode drawing heavy criticism for certain character decisions and arguably rushed storytelling. In the wake of all that, some people are now skeptical Benioff & Weiss are the right fit for Star Wars, but it's worth keeping in mind they'll be collaborating with others on these movies. As of now, the two are producing and writing, leaving the directing for someone else to handle. Still, it'll be fascinating to see how this all comes together into the next decade.

[h=1]Star Wars Trilogy From Game Of Thrones Creators Cancelled[/h]

A planned trilogy of Star Wars movies from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss has been cancelled. Benioff and Weiss have chosen to walk away from their deal with Lucasfilm, saying that their schedule is too full.
Benioff and Weiss were set to write and produce the trilogy of films, which already had their first release date set for 2022. Rian Johnson, who directedStar Wars: The Last Jedi, is also working on a new film trilogy for the franchise. While little is currently known about these films, they are intended to tell new stories within the galaxy far, far away, as the Skywalker saga will be ending with the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker this December.

Deadline broke the news of Benioff and Weiss' parting ways with Lucasfilm and their intended Star Wars trilogy. In a statement, the pair said, "Getting to talk about Star Wars with [George Lucas] and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime." However, in August Benioff and Weiss signed a nine-figure deal with Netflix, and it's that deal which has left them with no time to spare for Star Wars. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy left the door open for their possible return, saying, "David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”

The success of Game of Thrones meant that Benioff and Weiss were in demand before the series had even ended. In February 2018, Lucasfilm announced that they would start work on a brand new Star Wars trilogy afterGame of Thrones' eighth and final season had aired, and in May 2019 Disney revealed a release schedule that had the trilogy slated for 2022, 2024, and 2026. With Benioff and Weiss now departing, it's unclear whether Disney will bring new creatives onboard to continue developing their story ideas, or start over fresh.
The writing and producing duo have become somewhat controversial figures. A planned TV series for HBO called Confederate, which was pitched as an alternative history drama set in a world where the South won the American Civil War, was cancelled after a vocal backlash to the concept. The final season of Game of Thrones was also lambasted by many fans as a disappointment, and Benioff and Weiss' impatience to move on to their Star Wars trilogy was pinpointed as a reason why season 8 - which was just six episodes long - felt so rushed.

If the official statement is to be believed, Benioff and Weiss' Netflix deal has taken precedence over their Star Wars movies. Disney franchises do tend to monopolize the time and attention of whichever writers and directors are placed in charge of them, so it is hard to imagine how Benioff and Weiss would have found time to put together Netflix shows and movies while at the same time ushering in the next era of Star Wars. Though some may be disappointed by the news, others would probably agree - for one reason or another - that this may be for the best.
